Accuracy estimation of PDA-OES technique in inclusions investigation of duplex stainless steels

Nowadays, there is a great demand for clean steel in modern industries and technologies. Steel manufacturers try to optimize their steel production process in a way to achieve highest quality and cleanness. It is necessary to have feedback and online control of steel making process regarding inclusions. Currently the Optical Emission Spectroscopy with Pulse Distribution Analysis technique, PDA-OES is used as a routine method at Outokumpu Stainless AB in Avesta to provide feedback on inclusions characteristics. The aim of the present work is estimation accuracy of PDA results using SEM-INCA Feature. Three duplex stainless steel grades were selected for this project, LDX 2101, 2507 and 2205. The results show a good agreement in case of Al but difference in Ca and Mg. Some efforts were applied to explain this difference and some suggestaions were presented to improve future output of PDA.
