Abstract [en]

Why is Stockholm Art- and Architecture Center, SAAC- needed?

In the archipelago of Stockholm, on an island called Älgö, which means "the island of Elks" you will find the Stockholm Art and Architecture Center, SAAC. This site, open all year around, is a free zone from conventional solutions and a place where creators can realize their visions in scale 1:1.

An overall aim is always sustainability.

SAAC is needed to, without prestige, encourage the synergies between art, design and architecture. This will be done by offering people, working within these fields, to meet, work and live at SAAC for a for a period of time- a grow ground for research and development. Every year three International SAAC scholarships are announced.

Production of larger, or smaller, objects in scale 1:1, are taken place in the workshop or in the six gueststudios. Available for everyone is also a "safe" public workshop and a material library. Small areas, outside the property, in the park owned by the local authorities, will be available as exhibition sites for larger pieces of art or to empirically test new materials and new constructions methods for architecture. Optimal would be if the creators actually could live in their own constructions. All objects produced are shown at vernissages, exhibitions, guided tours and seminars. At SAAC not only the art exhibited will be changed over time but also the buildings and thus the whole expression of the site. Or as Mikael Richter, artist and owner of the property puts it: - "On the other side (he means "Artipelag") they show - here we develop, produce and show".

In 2012 Mikael Richter and Karen Froede Othelius started the SAAC foundation, which today has over 300 members. All work so far has been on ideal basis. The project is financed through sponsoring by the industry, private investors and the government. Marketing will be based on PR and visitors. There will be no entrance fees.

One overall aim for SAAC is sustainability. Therefore all buildings are constructed as passive-houses in, almost solely, re-used, re-processed and re-newable materials. All internally produced heat is exchanged. The energy consumption and CO2-impact, of production and of living, is calculated through a "cradle to cradle" analysis

Abstract [sv]

Varför behövs Stockholm Art- and Architecture Center?
