Fundamental solutions and characteristic

surfaces

This thesis explains the theory behind fundamental solutions

and how they look for various partial differential equations

- the Laplace equation, the heat equation and the

wave equation. Furthermore, the most useful application of

the fundamental solution to the wave equation is described

- videlicet characteristic surfaces. In this statement, it will

also be given an explanation of the implication of Huygens’

principle in its strong form. The thesis will focus on

the characteristic cone, most commonly known as the light

cone, which is a consequence of the existence of the characteristic

surfaces. In this part a presentation of why the

light cone is different in odd and even dimensions respectively

will be given, and additionally the resulting impact

on light and sound in space around us is explained.

Abstract [en]

Detta kandidatexamensarbete redogör för teorin bakom fundamentallösningar

samt hur de ser ut för olika partiella

differentialekvationer - Laplaceekvationen, värmeledningsekvationen

och vågekvationen. Vidare beskrivs den främsta

tillämpningen av vågekvationens fundamentallösning -

karakteristiska ytor. I redogörelsen av detta ges även en

förklaring av innebörden av Huygens’ princip i sin starka

form. Uppsatsen kommer fokusera på den karakteristiska

konen, även kallad ljuskonen, som är ett resultat av att de

karakteristiska ytorna existerar. I denna del kommer det

även redogöras för varför ljuskonen ser olika ut i jämna respektive

ojämna dimensioner, och vad det har för inverkan

på hur ljus och ljud uppför sig runtom oss.
