Social Reading – A study of computer-supported literature-discussions.

Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of different kinds of social interaction involving ebooks in educational and recreational contexts. It was commissioned by Riidr ApS, a Danish start-up ebook retailer. Using HCI-methods, social features of interest to ebook readers as well as possible ways of implementing them were identified. These findings were then used to construct a prototype of a social ebook reader, which was evaluated in a field study.

The report's main focus is on annotations and virtual book discussions, this being the most basic form of social interaction around books and the one most frequently discussed in available literature. The results suggest that the possibility of combining reading with a range of social features is attractive to users, but care must be taken to ensure unobtrusive yet intuitive interfaces so as not to diminish the reading experience.

Detta examensarbete är en studie av olika former av social interaktion kring e-böcker i pedagogiska och nöjessammanhang. Arbetet gjordes på uppdrag av Riidr ApS, en dansk e-boksåterförsäljare. Med hjälp av MDI-metoder identifierades sociala funktioner av intresse för e-boksläsare, såväl som möjliga sätt att implementera dessa. Studiens resultat användes för att konstruera en prototyp av en social e-boksläsare som utvärderades i ett användartest.

Rapportens fokus ligger på annotationer och virtuella bokdiskussioner, då dessa utgör den mest grundläggande formen av social interaktion kring böcker och förekommer frekvent i befintlig litteratur om ämnet. Resultaten tyder på att användarna lockas av potentialen i att kombinera läsande med en rad sociala funktioner. Stor vikt måste dock fästas vid att utforma gränssnitten så diskreta men ändå intuitiva som möjligt för att undvika att störa läsupplevelsen.
