LEAN Maturity Assesment Tool: A Tool to Evaluate Business Improvement Opportunities

This master thesis is written with the intent and aim to develop a tool for the assessment of Lean maturity in any company or organization. The tool is developed on behalf of the consulting firm Sandholm Associates AB, and its purpose is to critically assess the maturity of any company or organization from a Lean perspective, and analyze the possibilities to implement Lean by highlighting the deficiencies and gaps in their business development and quality work, and thus opening up for further business between the evaluated client and Sandholm Associates AB. The finished tool consists of two modules, one directed to management, and the other directed to the employees, with six surveys in each. It also consists of statistical analysis and comparative parts with charts and overall Lean maturity.
These are intended to provide a broad and comprehensive picture of a company or organization from a lean maturity perspective. The tool measures the Lean maturity in six key areas; Management, Strategy, Employees & Resources, Processes, Customers and Results. For the tool to be useful and suitable for its purpose, and meet Sandholm Associates AB’s requirements, there is four objective categories stated that the tool has to live up to; credibility, user friendliness, resource-efficiency and sales support effectiveness. The tool was tested on a representative company in the spring of 2013 in order to evaluate its suitability. Based on the test results, the tool has been analyzed with respect to the four objective categories, and the conclusion is that the tool fulfills its purpose.
