Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to compare the energy related and environmental consequences of implementing optical sorting as a means of waste collection with those of reducing food waste. In addition to studying the possibility of implementing optical sorting in downtown Stockholm, the yielded amounts of energy from waste collection and reduced wastage will be calculated. This is done by way of literature reviews and interviews. The amount of energy that can be generated through optical sorting and biogas production via anaerobic digestion in downtown Stockholm is 29-44 TJ/year, compared to 118 TJ/year saved by completely eliminating food waste. The generated biogas can replace fossil fuels, but the required food waste contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions as well as reduced bio diversity and eutrophication during the wasted food’s lifecycle. Thus, a reduced wastage appears to be superior to waste collection, but this reduction could potentially have negative consequences which are not included in this study.

Den här studien syftar till att jämföra de energi- och miljömässiga konsekvenserna av att implementera matavfallsinsamling genom optisk sortering med att minska livsmedelssvinnet i privata hushåll. Förutom att undersöka genomförbarheten i att implementera optisk sortering i Stockholms innerstad beräknas energimängderna som kan fås ut genom insamling respektive sparas genom minskat livsmedelssvinn i samma område. Detta genomförs genom litteraturstudie och intervjuer. Den energimängd som kan fås ut genom optisk sortering och rötning till biogas är i Stockholms innerstad 29-44 TJ/år, jämfört med en svinneliminering som sparar cirka 118 TJ/år. Den genererade biogasen kan ersätta fossila bränslen, men svinnet bidrar till såväl förstärkt växthuseffekt som minskad biodiversitet och övergödning under sin livscykel. En minskning av svinnet förefaller således vara överlägsen matavfallsinsamling, men denna minskning kan även ha negativa konsekvenser som inte innefattas av denna studie.
