Differences in Attitude to Personalized Search Results (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The amount of information on the Internet is growing. In order to minimize the time it takes to getthe answer to a question and to ease the process, people are using search engines. Search enginesfilter the information for each specific user, which eventuates in personalized search results. Thepurpose of this work is to explore if there is a difference in attitude, towards the personaladjustments made by search engines, between students that study a Master of Science and studentsthat study another type of higher education. To examine if there was a difference in attitude aquantitative study was carried out in the form of a survey. A qualitative study was also made, in theform of interviews. The result of our work shows that there are differences in attitude between the two groups. There isa greater awareness of the personal adjustments among the students at a Master of Scienceeducation. The result also shows that the students who participated in this study are, in general, positive about personalized adjustments. Furthermore, there is a larger majority of the Master ofScience students who have a positive attitude towards the personalized adjustments. A largerpercentage of the students who study another education have a negative attitude towards theadjustments. The discussion and analysis argue, supported by theory, the cause of the differences and discusswhether there is a correlation between attitude, awareness and usage. The discussion also addresseswhether the students are trapped in a filter bubble or not.
