Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The project explores the timber joint tradition in Dalarna, Sweden, both as a construction principle and aesthetic expression. The history and origins of the technique are analyzed, as well as associated phenomenas such as the square yard, pasture culture and the system of having several smaller houses with different functions. The various typical structural details are presented - timber jointing with its different joints, different types of roofing and the most common type of foundation; joint stones. The contemporary built environment is analyzed to see how it preserves the tradition today - what has remained and what has been added? Plan regulations for an area in Lerdal, Rättvik, are visualized and discussed - is the original expression preserved through these regulations, or is there something else that constitutes the core of the tradition? A proposal for a summer house in the area is presented as an alternative method to combine tradition with today's technology and capabilities. Is it possible to more successfully preserve the cultural heritage of Dalarna, but at the same time combine with modern architectural features and qualities? This question and more, the project seeks to answer through a proposal that takes account of tradition, plan regulations, construction, function, spatiality, view and privacy.
