Abstract [sv]

I denna uppsats undersöks vilken av tre utvalda video-codecs som är bäst lämpad för att strömma digital video direkt genom en webbläsare utan hjälp från tredjepartsstöd. De tre mjukvarorna som studeras är H.264, VP8 samt Theora. Uppsatsen inkluderar en överskådlig bild av det rådande landskapet för digital video samt deras bakomliggande teknologi. Undersökningen innefattar ett originellt, och för uppgiften utformat, upplägg med två huvudsakliga experiment där prestanda mäts med objektiva metoder. Resultat visar tydligt att H.264 i nuläget är den bäst presterande codec:en men visar samtidigt på en potentiellt inbyggd brist som kan komma att påverka dess efterträdare H.265. Slutligen ger uppsatsen en indikation på var fokus kommer att ligga i utvecklingen av tekniken bakom framtidens videoströmning.

Abstract [en]

In this essay a study has been carried out to determine which, out of three, video codec is most suited for digital video streamed directly through a web browser, without the help of a third-party application. The three pieces of software that has been examined are H.264, VP8 and Theora. The essay includes a perspicuous view of the current digital video landscape including the underlying technology. The tests include an original, and for the assignment tailored, setup with two main experiments which then are measured with objective methods. The results conclude that H.264 is currently the most appropriate codec for the task, however at the same time it reveals a possible embedded deficiency which might also affect its supposed successor H.265. Finally the essay gives an indication as to where the focus of the future technological development behind streamed video will be placed.
