Building Information Modelling (BIM) implementation from the perspective of building product manufacturers

The term Building Information Modelling (BIM) describes an emerging technological and procedural development in the building industry. The concept of intelligent BIM objects is known, however the usage of manufacturer specific BIM objects is relatively new and therefore the value of the objects is perceived differently by different building project participants.
The purpose of the thesis is to determine the value of manufacturer specific objects for different project participants. The thesis first determines and then analyses the benefits and challenges of creating and using the objects from the perspective of building product manufacturers, architects and contractors.
The data for determining the current situation and attitudes towards the future develop-ment of the BIM objects is acquired from the interviews of industry professionals’ opinions.
According to the findings, manufacturers perceive a demand from more BIM mature contractors to produce the objects. The objects’ ability to generate a lead to the real prod-ucts, earlier data analysis, reduced design time and costs are considered to be the main benefits.
Lack of knowledge and guidelines, the relatively large file sizes of the objects and im-plementation of the BIM concept and processes inside the organisations are seen as the main challenges.
BIM knowledge sharing, education and "best practice" examples would support the building industry in overcoming these barriers. Additionally, the object users see that further development of software and hardware systems could solve the technical issues experienced today.
