Abstract [en]

Electromyography (EMG) is a technique that measures muscle activity, which

means detecting the electrical signals that travel through the muscle in connection

with muscle contraction. This project deals with how EMG can be used to

control a computer game.

The project is centered around the game 'EMG Track Game' which has been

constructed as part of this work. 'EMG Track Game' is controlled by two

electrodes fastened on the player. These are attached to two selected muscles

and control the motion in one direction each, one up and the other one down.

The game is constructed in the purpose of being used in several elds of application.

Among these are as entertainment, training equipment and a tool in

research related to EMG and muscles.

To highlight a possible application a study concerning muscle control has been

conducted. It answers the question of whether players score better with their

dominant arm in comparison with their non-dominant one. Under the assumption

that score can be related to muscle control the study has shown that test

subjects do not have better muscle control in the biceps and triceps of their

dominant arm than in their non-dominant arm.

Elektromyogra (EMG) är en teknik som mäter muskelaktivitet, vilket innebär

att detektera de elektriska signaler som färdas genom en muskel i samband

med muskelkontraktion. Detta projekt handlar om hur EMG kan användas som

styrsignal för datorspel.

Projektet är centrerat kring spelet 'EMG Track Game' som har konstruerats

som en del av detta arbete. 'EMG Track Game' styrs genom att spelaren har

två EMG-elektroder, en var på två utvalda muskler, musklerna kontrollerar rö-

relse i en riktning var, upp respektive ner. Spelet är konstruerat i syfte att kunna

nyttjas inom  ertalet användningsområden, däribland som underhållning, trä-

ningsredskap och hjälpmedel för undersökningar som relaterar till EMG och

muskler.

För att visa på ett exempel på vad spelet kan användas till har en undersökning

kring muskelkontroll genomförts. Denna utröner huruvida spelare presterar

bättre med sin dominanta eller icke-dominanta arm. Under antagandet att prestation

i 'EMG Track Game' är kopplat till muskelkontroll hos spelaren har

undersökningen visat att försökspersoner inte verkar ha bättre muskelkontroll i

biceps och triceps mot sin dominanta arm jämfört med sin icke-dominanta arm.
