Abstract [en]

This paper is an effort to establish a holistic approach towards environmental management of maritime activities. A number of environmental analytical and managerial concepts and tools are identified and briefly reviewed to address different environmental issues in the maritime industry. Then a framework is introduced that different stakeholders can use as a guide to identify environmental management tools relevant to different decision levels of their organization. With the help of the framework, the stakeholders can improve their environmental performance by strategically using the identified concepts and tools which will lead to reduced environmental impact throughout a ship’s life cycle.
