Characterisation of impact damage generation in thin-ply carbon/epoxy textile composites

Abstract [en]

As part of the UpInTheBlue project, with the aim of introducing the Oxeon TeXtreme weave to the aerospace industry, the impact damage response of the thin ply TeXtreme weave was examined. Six 4 mm specimens were impacted with 30 or 20 J using the ASTM D7136 standard. After impact the specimens were subjected to ultrasonic analysis to investigate the delamination damage, thermal deplying to investigate fibre failures and through-the-thickness sectioning to investigate matrix cracks. The results show a larger extent of fibre failures and less evident matrix cracks compared to prepreg material.
