Abstract [en]

This project investigates the future development of the Marieberg area in Stockholm and focuses on how to encourage a rich urban life as the neighborhood begins to densify. The proposal deals with the relationship between the urban and the building scale. How can student housing add value to the area? The goal is to design a program that integrates the surrounding life- the needs of local residents and workers- with the building.

Marieberg is located on the south-western part of Kungsholmen, close to the inner city. Most of the area was planned and built during the late 1950's / early 1960's, and lacks the typical urban pattern of the central parts of Stockholm. Compared to the inner city standards, the area has a low population density, which is also reflected in the relatively limited range of services, restaurants, culture etc.

Today Marieberg is mainly a place one typically passes through and not dwells in. One major problem is the lack of well-connected pedestrian links to nearby urban areas. Marieberg's location next to the inner city and its close proximity to Rålambshovsparken offers great potential as an attractive meeting and recreational place for residents, as well as visitors from other parts of the city.

A starting point to activate Marieberg is to improve its connection to Rålambshovsparken at Västerbroplan - a traffic junction between the park and the rest of the area. The building proposal itself is meant to facilitate the connection to the park and together with the surrounding  landscape serve as a new public meeting place and attraction.
