Abstract [en]

In today’s forest industry there is a great interest to decrease the damages of Norway spruce caused by pine weevil and fungal attacks. Therefore this research project consisted of two parts. The first part consisted of investigating the effects of fungal infection,

Heterobasidion annosum, in Norway spruce and to examine if a biotransformation of the chemical composition has occurred. Further it was also investigated if the tree had developed any strong antifungal substances. The study was conducted through extraction of the wood, identification by GC-MS and antifungal testing. From the tests it was concluded that nonpolar substances from the healthy part of the wood had some antifungal effect. Also from the weight of the extracts it could be seen that the chemical composition of the wood has changed.

The second part of the research aimed to see if the infected wood extracts could be used for antifeedant properties against the pine weevil,

Hylobius abietis. This was conducted through further fractioning of some of the wood extracts, identification by GC-MS and antifeedant test. The results of the antifeedant tests indicated some interesting effects. Several of the substances encountered during the investigation are known for their antifeedant activity. However none of the extracts or fractions could be of commercial use due to their insufficient effect.

Dagens skogsindustri är intresserad av att minska skador på träd orsakade av snytbaggar och svampinfektioner. Detta forskningsprojekt bestod av två delar. Den första delen undersökte hur en infektion av

Heterobasidion annosum påverkar gran, samt huruvida en biotransformation av den kemiska sammansättningen har skett. Vidare undersöktes om trädet utvecklat svamptillväxthämmande substanser. Studien utfördes genom extraktion av granspån, identifiering med hjälp av GC-MS och antifungaltest. Slutsatsen, utifrån resultatet, var att opolära ämnen från den friska delen av veden hade antifungaleffekt. Utifrån vikten av extrakten gick det att se att den kemiska sammansättningen hade förändrats.

Den andra delen av projektet syftade till att undersöka om infekterat träd innehåller ämnen med antifeedanteffekt mot snytbaggen,

Hylobius abietis. Detta utfördes genom vidare fraktionering av några utvalda vedextrakt, identifiering med hjälp av GC-MS och antifeedanttest. Resultaten av antifeedanttesterna visade på intressanta effekter. Flera av de identifierade ämnena är redan kända för sin antifeedantaktivitet. Inget av de framtagna extrakten eller fraktionerna kunde dock användas kommersiellt på grund av deras för låga aktivitet.
