The profile and I : A study on user profiles and identity on Steam (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Internet and social media has made it possible for users to share information that will represent them in the different virtual environments. Steam is an example of a gaming platform where the opportunity to create and change user profiles are provided to the users. However, why do active users of Steam that have changed their user profile choose to do so?

Information on users’ opportunities to share information about themselves and on what functions the users tended to utilize on Steam when they changed their profile was gathered via a survey with 50 participants. Further on semi structured interviews were held. The answers from the interviews led to discussions about different terms that could explain the reasons for the use of functions on the user profiles.

The results from this study showed that the terms that describe why users choose to change their profile are virtual identity, anonymity and social capital. The results correlate to the former studies that have been examined and that address identity and social networks.
