Abstract [sv]

Binauralt ljud innebär återskapandet av ljudsignaler så som människan uppfattar

dem. Detta kan genomföras med hjälp av en teknik bestående av två mikrofoner

som placeras vid öronen på ett dockhuvud. Uppspelning av ljudet i hörlurar gör att

känslan av avstånd och riktning bevaras. Tekniken har utvecklats sedan slutet av

1800-talet men fortfarande inte brett ut sig och nyttjats i någon större utsträckning.

Denna rapport undersöker vad binauralt ljud gör för lyssnarens upplevelse av ljud,

samt diskuterar varför denna teknik inte används mer.

Genom en undersökning bland studenter på Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan i

Stockholm har vi jämfört en binaural inspelning, skapad specifikt för denna studie,

med samma inspelning i monoljud. Samtliga deltagare ansåg att den binaurala

inspelningen var mer verklighetstrogen och flertalet rapporterade fysiska reaktioner

som en följd av detta. Reaktionerna gav uttryck i bland annat rysningar och upplevd

förhöjd puls. Deltagarna ansåg att tekniken skulle kunna undersökas vidare i syftet

att användas inom andra sammanhang som exempelvis film och spel.

Abstract [en]

Binaural audio is a recreation of sound the way a human would perceive it. By using

two microphones attached to a dummy head when recording the sound, and a set of

headphones when listening to it, the perception of distance and direction is

preserved. Even though this technology has been developed since the latter part of

the 19th century, it has not yet been used in a greater extent. This report

investigates why binaural audio is relevant to the listener’s audio experience and

discusses why it is not used more today.

The study was made on students at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm

where we let them compare two versions of a sound sketch that was specifically

produced for this study, one version in binaural and one in mono. All participants

considered the binaural version to be more lifelike and several of them reported

physical and mental reactions due to this. The participants also considered that this

technology should be examined further in order to be used in other contexts, e.g.

film and video games.
