Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Does a place lose its identity when no one visits it? Can a place posses two completely different identities, one for summer and one for winter?

I find that Mariefred is characterized by a form of ambiguity in its identity, where it can’t decide which direction to move forward in. Either it lives on in its past, where it’s continually adapting to the occasional visitor, or the city stops being a museum oriented society, where the dialog with the past has stagnated and instead chooses a path where its identity is no longer controlled by tourism. I think of Mariefred as a place that doesn’t have try to adapt to the idyllic touch as a mean to please the visitors, a place that dares to break away from Gripsholm Castle long-lasting grip and its dominant shade.

In an attempt to identify the historical aspects, not for sentimental reasons or historical value, but as the inspiration and identity creating elements, should the added building contribute to the future by representing its own time and thus obtaining as much weight as the existing ones.
