    Abstract [en]

    The European Union (EU) initiative on the Digital Transformation of Health and Care (Digicare) aims to provide the conditions necessary for building a secure, flexible, and decentralized digital health infrastructure. Creating a European Health Research and Innovation Cloud (HRIC) within this environment should enable data sharing and analysis for health research across the EU, in compliance with data protection legislation while preserving the full trust of the participants. Such a HRIC should learn from and build on existing data infrastructures, integrate best practices, and focus on the concrete needs of the community in terms of technologies, governance, management, regulation, and ethics requirements. Here, we describe the vision and expected benefits of digital data sharing in health research activities and present a roadmap that fosters the opportunities while answering the challenges of implementing a HRIC. For this, we put forward five specific recommendations and action points to ensure that a European HRIC: i) is built on established standards and guidelines, providing cloud technologies through an open and decentralized infrastructure; ii) is developed and certified to the highest standards of interoperability and data security that can be trusted by all stakeholders; iii) is supported by a robust ethical and legal framework that is compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); iv) establishes a proper environment for the training of new generations of data and medical scientists; and v) stimulates research and innovation in transnational collaborations through public and private initiatives and partnerships funded by the EU through Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

    Abstract [en]

    Open Source Medical Devices may be part of the solution towards the democratization of medical technologies pursuing Universal Health Coverage as part of the Sustainable Development Goals for United Nations. Recent technological advances, especially in information and communication technologies, combined with innovative collaborative design methodologies and manufacturing techniques allow for the mass-personalization of biodevices and help to optimize the related development times and costs, while keeping safety in the foreground through the whole life cycle of medical products. These advantages can be further promoted by adequately fostering collaboration, communication, high value information exchange, and sustainable partnerships and by extending the employment of open source strategies. To this end, within the UBORA project, we are developing a framework for training the biomedical engineers of the future in open-source collaborative design strategies and for supporting the sharing of information and the assessment of safety and efficacy in novel biodevices. An essential part of this open-source collaborative framework is the UBORA e-infrastructure, which is presented in this study, together with some initial success cases. Main future challenges, connected with regulatory harmonization, with educational issues and with accessible and open design and manufacturing resources, among others, are also presented and discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter revisits a System Dynamics model developed in 2002 with the aim of exploring the future impacts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on environmental sustainability in the EU, which then consisted of 15 countries. The time horizon of the study was 20 years (2000–2020). We analyze the results in light of empirical data that is now available for 2000–2012. None of the three scenarios that were developed by experts to specify the external factors needed to run the model were realistic from today’s point of view. If the model is re-run with more realistic input data for the first half of the simulation period, however, the main results regarding the impact of ICT remain qualitatively the same; they seem to be relatively robust implications of the causal system structure, as it is represented in the model. Overall, the impacts of ICT for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental burdens for 2020 tend to be slightly stronger if the simulation is based on the empirical data now available.

    The induction of demand by increasing the efficiency of a production or consumption process is known as the rebound effect. Feedback loops in System Dynamics can be used to conceptualize the structure of this complex phenomenon and also for communicating model-based insights. In passenger transport, the rebound effect can be induced through increased cost efficiency (direct economic rebound) and/or increase in speed (time rebound). In this paper we review and compare two models on environmental effects of passenger transport—including a model on the role of information and communication technology. We highlight the feedback mechanisms used to deal with the rebound effect (price, efficiency, and time rebound).

    Abstract [en]

    In this study, a method for landing with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) on a µm size ake of graphene was developed. Two approaches were explored, one using physical guides to navigate on the sample and another one using capacitive pickup in the system. We show that with no modication of the STM that was used, we could land on a micrometer size ake of graphene.

    This chapter aims to explore Management Control Systems (MCS) resulting from the implementation of agile development methods, relying on an established MCS taxonomy. An abductive approach was adopted, considering the shortage of research evaluating the post-adoption effects of agile methods. Four organizations from an international telecommunication firm that implemented agile methods were involved, and 44 individual semi-structured interviews were performed. In addition, 121 free comments from a global survey to the same organizations were used as secondary data. The paper indicates how Scrum, a widespread agile method, implicitly brings multiple enforcing levers of control to a team’s self-regulatory learning processes.

    Challenges Related to the Introduction of Innovative Services in the Market: Mobile Payment Services in the Swedish Retail Industry2015Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)

    Mobile payment services are expected to be the next step of the electronic payment evolution. However, the level of penetration in European countries is lower than expected. The focus of most academic research has been in two main areas: (i) mobile payment adoption by consumers and (ii) technical aspects of the service. Consequently, a number of themes remain under-researched. In order to expand knowledge on reasons that affect the wider penetration of mobile payments, challenges related to the introduction of mobile payment services in the market have been explored in this thesis.

    More specifically, this research has addressed two problem areas: (i) why mobile payments have not been widely adopted by merchants; and (ii) what effects that the introduction of mobile payments has had on the business networks of the involved actors. As an example, we use the mobile payment services applied in the Swedish retail industry. The study is focused on the main groups of stakeholders – the mobile payment providers, the retailers, and the consumers.

    First, this study has helped to identify what different stakeholders expect of mobile payments and how these services correspond to their needs. In order to analyse the expectations of stakeholders, we have developed an analysis framework based on the theory of diffusion of innovations, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and the theory of network externalities. The analysis highlights the expectations of stakeholders and helps to understand what kind of mobile payment service merchants expect and are willing to adopt. One key finding is that existing mobile payment services for retailing could be further improved in order to ensure an enhanced purchasing process for consumers.

    Second, the research has explored the impact of mobile payment services on the business networks. In order to analyse the relationships and cooperation between business actors, and changes in business strategy and network structure, we used the approach proposed by the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Group. The performed analysis illustrates the following changes in the structure of business networks for the traditional payment solutions (bank cards): (i) emergence of new business actors (i.e. independent mobile payment providers); (ii) new roles and activities of business actors; and (iii) exclusion of traditional business actors (i.e. banks) from the mobile payment systems.

    All these changes lead to increased complexity of relationships and increased level of interdependence between business actors within the networks. The following changes in the strategies of involved actors have been identified: (i) mobile payment providers seek to achieve a control over the business network; (ii) the retailers affect strategies of the mobile payment providers; (iii) the marketing strategies of business actors include cross-marketing in different sectors. All these changes result in additional value and enhanced quality of service for consumers.

    In order to analyse a complex and multidisciplinary area such as mobile payments, it is beneficial to use more than one analysis approach. A combination of different complementing methods helps to explore different aspects of the phenomenon and provides a more comprehensive overview of several research aspects.

    This work contributes to the academic research of mobile payment service adoption by merchants through proposing a theoretical analysis framework. More specifically, the research addresses a new area – expectations of retailers when new solutions are introduced. The framework consists of the following criteria and aspects: technological feasibility, economic benefits, lower service costs, added value of services, network externalities and the problem of critical mass, and finally, ease of use. This framework helps to identify what merchants can expect of mobile payment services.

    Another area of contribution is the analysis of the effect that mobile payments make on the actors and business networks of traditional payment services. The introduction of new services results in emergence of new business actors, a need to establish new relationships, and increased complexity of a business network. Moreover, in order to succeed, cooperation between all network actors is needed. As a result, business actors have to adjust their services and strategies according to needs of others.

    A recent review of mobile payment research by Dahlberg et al. (2015) concludes that there is a need to synthesise this research area by studying contexts in which innovation is carried out and to integrate different aspects of research. This article aims to provide a proposal for how to achieve such integration and context orientation by building on previous studies and offering an additional review. Our systematic literature review of mobile payments research is focused on papers published during 2006–2016. The main objective is to examine how mobile payments research has been conducted from the methodological and theoretical perspectives. Our findings show that research on mobile payments is a multidisciplinary research. Three main themes in the research (in line with previous studies) are customer adoption, technological aspects, and business aspects. Moreover, research is mainly analytical based on a deductive approach. To meet the challenge formulated in the previous research, we propose and apply a socio-technical system framework to achieve synthesis and context-specific consideration in future research on mobile payments.

    With global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ever increasing, we are currently seeing a renewed interest in carbon footprint calculators (or carbon calculators for short). While carbon calculators have traditionally calculated emissions based on user input about e.g., food, heating, and traveling, a new development in this area is the use of transaction data to also estimate emissions based on consumption. Such carbon calculators should be able to provide users with more accurate estimations, easier input possibilities, and an incentive to continue using them. In this paper, we present the results from a survey sent to the users of such a novel carbon calculator, called Svalna. Svalna offers users the possibility to connect their bank account. The transaction data are then coupled with Environmental Extended Multi Regional Input Output data (EE-MRIO) for Swedish conditions which are used to determine a continuous overview of the user’s greenhouse gas emissions from consumption. The aim of the survey was to (a) understand whether people are willing to connect their bank account, (b) whether they trust the calculations of their emissions, and (c) whether they think the use of Svalna has an effect on their behaviour. Furthermore, we wanted to know how Svalna could be improved. While the results of the survey showed that many users were willing to connect their bank account, a rather large part of the users perceived safety risks in doing so. The users also showed an only average level of trust in the correctness of the estimated greenhouse gas emissions. A lack of trust was attributed to experiencing technical problems but also to not knowing how the emissions were calculated and because the calculator could not capture all details of the user’s life. However, many users still indicated that the use of Svalna had helped them to initiate action to reduce their emissions. In order to improve Svalna, the users wanted to be able to provide more details, e.g., by scanning receipts and get better options for dealing with a shared economy. We conclude this paper by discussing some opportunities and challenges for the use of transaction data in carbon footprint calculators.

    Searchers with a complex information need typically slice-and-dice their problem into several queries and subqueries, and laboriously combine the answers post hoc to solve their tasks. Consider planning a social event at the last day of SIGIR, in the unknown city of Beijing, factoring in distances, timing, and preferences on budget, cuisine, and entertainment. A system supporting the entire search episode should "know" a lot, either from profiles or implicit information, or from explicit information in the query or from feedback. This may lead to the (interactive) construction of a complexly structured query, but sometimes the most obvious query for a complex need is dead simple: entertain me. Rather than returning ten-blue-lines in response to a 2.4-word query, the desired system should support searchers during their whole task or search episode, by iteratively constructing a complex query or search strategy, by exploring the result-space at every stage, and by combining the partial answers into a coherent whole.

    The workshop brought together a varied group of researchers covering both user and system centered approaches, who worked together on the problem and potential solutions. There was a strong feeling that we made substantial progress. First, there was general optimism on the wealth of contextual information that can be derived from context or natural interactions without the need for obstrusive explicit feedback. Second, the task of "contextual suggestions"--matching specific types of results against rich profiles--was identified as a manageable first step, and concrete plans for such as track were discussed in the aftermath of the workshop. Third, the identified dimensions of variation--such as the level of engagement, or user versus system initiative--give clear suggestions of the types of input a searcher is willing or able to give and the type of response expected from a system.

    In this chapter, five case studies of the implementation of contact centers in Swedish municipalities are described and discussed with a focus on inclusive e-government. The research methods used are mainly qualitative interviews with different categories of municipal personnel and also with some citizens. The main conclusions are that the implementation of contact centers seems to contribute to increased accessibility of municipal services, even for those citizens who might have problems using Internet services. The study indicates that development towards increased equal treatment of citizens and a contribution to reducing problems is mainly related to the "digital divide." Municipal services became more adapted to citizens' needs by using citizen-centric methods and dialogue during the development process and in the daily work of the contact centers. The implementation of municipal contact centers can thus be seen as a step towards inclusive e-government, but there is still a need to go further in this direction.

    This paper aims to investigate the impact of enterprise architecture (EA) on system capabilities in dealing with changes and uncertainties in globalised business environments. Enterprise information systems are viewed as information systems to acquire, process, and utilise data in decision-making supports at all levels and domains of businesses, and Internet of things (IoT), big data analytics (BDA), and digital manufacturing (DM) are introduced as representative enabling technologies for data collection, processing, and utilisation in manufacturing applications. The historical development of manufacturing technologies is examined to understand the evolution of system paradigms. The Shannon entropy is adopted to measure the complexity of systems and illustrate the roles of EAs in managing system complexity and achieving system stability in the long term. It is our argument that existing EAs sacrifice system flexibility, resilience, and adaptability for the reduction of system complexity; note that higher adaptability is critical to make a manufacturing system successfully. New EA is proposed to maximise system capabilities for higher flexibility, resilience, and adaptability. The potentials of the proposed EA to modern manufacturing are explored to identify critical research topics with illustrative examples from an application perspective.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we analyze interviews from four technology-intensive companies, focused on service and service development. All companies have during the last two decades introduced interaction design units, and the corporations were selected due to their interest in also expanding the service share of their business. This service shift has been a top-down initiative. However in only two companies, the initiatives have led to the establishment of enterprise wide service development processes, and in the other two companies, the service development is more ad hoc. It is argued that even if interaction design has close theoretical relation to service design such combination has so far been limited. We discuss the shift from product to service view of the offerings within these companies, and relate this to user-centered perspectives. We argue there is a window of opportunity within technology-intensive and engineering focused industries to include user-centered design when formalizing service development.

    The issue of national and European identity is driving many of the issues that are currently of concern to European citizens. The Erasmus+ funded RU EU? project aims to develop an innovative online game, the RU EU? game, that will help students across Europe to develop a better understanding of their own National and European identity and values, as well as those of others, and to challenge them about their attitudes and prejudices by tackling problem solving dilemmas relating to identity. It is hoped that the game will provide an engaging platform for young Europeans to confront some of the complex and confusing issues surrounding National and European identity at a time of change and increasing tension across Europe. This paper describes the early stages of the game design and focuses on characterizing the learning outcomes and game mechanics for the RU EU? game and bringing these together.

    Abstract [en]

    This article aims to make a contribution to the debate on how contemporary collaborative commons, as part of the wider sharing economy, can be understood and supported. Three cases of contemporary commons are analysed: a DIY bike repair studio, a pop-up home office concept and Wikipedia. The article shows how the design principles developed for governing natural resource commons are only partly applicable to these contemporary commons. It also illustrates the differences in these types of commons in terms of the nature of the resource being shared, scarcity, barriers to entry and how rules are formulated and upheld.

    Information is a critical factor to support a proactive behaviour of operators in complex work settings characterized by flexible levels of automation and need for knowledge-based decision making. In this conceptual paper the authors define proactive behaviour as the ability of operators to control a situation by taking action in advance. Information requirements that enable proactivity and different control behaviour are identified. Moreover, several demands on the information support system are outlined. Further, the paper presents some implications for management as a result of the new work role of the operator regarding decision making, planning, and control.

    This paper looks at the changing shape of mobile connectivity and how it has influenced the potential for informing on sustainable travel. It examines the role mobile connectivity has had for an ICT based service informing on traffic and transport in order to trace what role social practices of interconnecting through mobile media may have had for such an enterprise. The paper looks at two historical examples of ICT based traffic and travel information services in Stockholm, Sweden in order to discuss what role mobile connectivity may have for promoting sustainable travel through ICT.

    An Internet-based system for informing on multimodal travel planning (several modes of transportation) was introduced in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2000 in the form of a web page called trafiken.nu. The web page has a historical value of being one of the first attempts in Europe, and possibly the world, at providing an ICT-based travel planning service geared towards facilitating sustainable travel to the general public. The aim of this article is to investigate the historical development of trafiken.nu in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service with a potential for facilitating sustainable travel planning. Findings from the study of trafiken.nu suggest that the organizations behind the service have been slow in adapting to shifting media technology practices on how to provide for information which has affected the uptake of the service. Lessons from the case study provide a basis for arguing that organizations attempting to implement public information services would benefit from finding a means of harnessing collective intelligence in order to provide for a more customizable and responsive service to the general public.

    Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.

    Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating  environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.

    Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings.

    Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures.

    Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

    This paper depicts how a Swedish radio station organized a means of real-time information management to report on local traffic conditions long before the common use of the Internet. Drawing on a history of the Stockholm traffic radio staff the study examines particular conditions for organizing a service that may inform next generations of smart travel planning systems. The author notes how a vision of involving the public together with the use of increasingly mobile and interconnected communication devices provided the service with an opportunity for harnessing collective intelligence. The study highlights critical success factors and barriers for organizing collective  intelligence and the importance they may have had for providing a real-time information service to the public.

    Socio-technical Transformations in Care Practices: Investigating the Implementation of Social Alarm Systems in Nursing Homes2021Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)

    The worldwide shortage of qualified care workers along with the increasing need for elderly care services has restrained the capacity of nursing homes to offer their residents high-quality care services. Along with digitalization, policymakers believe that technological advancements can improve the efficiency of care and streamline care work, thus helping to alleviate the challenge above. These investments include the creation of new care services by adopting innovations such as social robots, and the update of existing care services by replacing analogue technologies with digital versions, such as social alarm systems. While numerous studies have discussed the implementation of new digital technologies, the digitalization of existing care services has received less attention.This dissertation conducts empirical investigations on the digitalization of social alarm systems in four Swedish nursing homes. By applying theories of social shaping of technology with a focus on socio-technical transformations in care practices, it asks how implementation of the new social alarm systems is socially shaped in care practices. The social alarm system is an established technology that aims to enable users to call for help in emergencies. Based on a literature review of the central theme (Paper I), the dissertation examines discrepancies between planned and actual implementation outcomes (Paper II), differences within a team during project executing (Paper III), and the relationship between individuals’ actual use of technology and the assumptions inscribed in the system and the diverse care concepts in nursing homes (Paper IV). The methodological basis of the dissertation comprises analysis of implementation documents, observations of healthcare professionals’ daily work, interviews with employees of both technology companies and nursing homes, questionnaires completed by healthcare professionals, and a literature review.The results reveal that technology implementation is far from predictable outside the care context. During the implementation process, people from different groups have distinct goals, focus on different facets, and develop diverse approaches for integrating the system into daily work. Frontline professionals determine their ways of using the new social alarm system based on their personal and situational understanding of technology scripts and care concepts under given contexts. The results contribute to theoretical clarifications as well as practical possibilities and limitations to guide the implementation of social alarm systems in nursing homes. The findings indicate that the introduction of a digital social alarm system brings various changes. The digitalization of social alarm services in nursing homes can benefit from a clear positioning of the new system, a common ground for sufficient communication between actors involved, and an in-depth interpretation of local environments, as well as flexible and continuous implementation strategies.

    Mixtures of polyelectrolytes and oppositely charged surfactants find applications in many processes and products that are used in our daily life. Such systems also show many interesting features from a scientific point of view. Due to the combined technological relevance and scientific challenge, considerable research efforts have been made in this area in recent years. This has resulted in new theoretical approaches, the development of simulation methods and new experimental techniques and, of course, a large body of new findings. Together, these efforts have increased the understanding significantly, especially during the last 5 years. This chapter reviews some aspects of this topic, focusing on bulk association and association at solid/liquid interfaces. The review is focused on developments during the 21st century, even though in some cases a historical perspective is also offered.

    We need to analyse a large number of e-mails sent by the citizens to the customer services department of a governmental organisation based in Sweden. To carry out this analysis we clustered a large number of e-mails with the aim of automatic e-mail answering. One issue that came up was whether we should use the whole e-mail including the thread or just the original query for the clustering. In this paper we describe this investigation. Our results show that only the query and the answering part should be used, but not necessarily the whole e-mail thread. The results clearly show that the original question contains more useful information than only the answer, although a combination is even better. Using the full e-mail thread does not downgrade the result.

    Since the introduction of the concept of learning curves in manufacturing, many articles have been applying the model to study learning phenomena. In assembly, several studies present a learning curve when an operator is trained over a new assembly task; however, when comparisons are made between learning curves corresponding to different training methods, unaware researchers can show misleading results. Often, these studies neglect either or both the stochastic nature of the learning curves produced by several operators under experimental conditions, and the high correlation of the experimental samples collected from each operator that constitute one learning curve. Furthermore, recent studies are testing newer technologies, such as assembly animations or augmented reality, to provide assembly aid, but they fail to observe deeper implications on how these digital training methods truly influence the learning curves of the operators. This article proposes a novel statistical study of the influence of expert video aid on the learning curves in terms of assembly time by means of functional analysis of variance (FANOVA). This method is better suited to compare learning curves than common analysis of variance (ANOVA), due to correlated data, or graphical comparisons, due to the stochastic nature of the aggregated learning curves. The results show that two main effects of the expert video aid influence the learning curves: one in the transient and another in the steady state of the learning curve. The transient effect of the expert video aid, where the statistical tests suffer from a high variance in the data, appears to be a reduction in terms of assembly time for the first assemblies: the operators seem to benefit from the expert video aid. As soon as the steady state is reached, a slower and statistically significant effect appears to favor the learning processes of the operators who do not receive any training aid. Since the steady state of the learning curves represents the long term production efficiency of the operators, the latter effect might require more attention from industry and researchers.

    We report in this paper on a multiyear endeavour within the EIT (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) Digital community, during which EIT Digital built an international community of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (“I&E”) teachers at Master level by implementing a blended learning strategy. We see this challenge as a case in change management, which could offer relevant insight to run similar initiatives of blending learning adoption as an enabler to developing pedagogical cooperation in networks of universities with real impact on practices. Through the lenses of change management theory, we describe and analyse the methods that allowed EIT Digital to create and enhance a community of “teacher-producers” in order to develop and deploy blended education from scratch. EIT Digital, a Knowledge and Innovation Community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), provides IT education at Master’s level since 2013 and in association with its around 20 member universities, including a strong “Innovation & Entrepreneurship” (“I&E”) education component. EIT Digital developed a blended learning strategy whose originality came from the fact that some of the teachers are also producers on behalf of the entire community, receiving associated co-funding and technical support from EIT Digital. More specifically, teachers actively took part to the production agenda, according to which producers were chosen within the community to create and deliver the agreed online contents. EIT Digital library now encompasses more than 500 basic online contents (“nuggets”) covering most topics relevant for I&E education at the graduate level, from basic business model introductions to complex technology transfer strategies. This amounts to more than 45 hours’ worth of videos along with dozens of written cases, quizzes and other forms of online/offline assignments. Depending on the various universities’ contexts, different blending strategies were deployed, which had practical consequences on the global EIT Digital development. The heterogeneity of the universities’ profiles probably significantly increased the value of the EIT Digital network which proved relevant with regards to blended learning adoption, while EIT Digital’s change management strategy contributed significantly to uplifting the I&E education offered at the member universities, notably giving momentum to its I&E teacher community.

Safety engineering employs simple design principles or rules of thumb such as inherent safety, multiple barriers, and numerical safety margins to reduce the risk of accidents. Probabilistic risk analysis combines the probabilities of individual events in event chains leading to accidents in order to identify design elements in need of improvement and often also to optimize the use of resources. It is proposed that the two methodologies should be seen as complementary rather than as competitors. Probabilistic risk analysis is at its advantage when meaningful probability estimates are available for most of the major events that may contribute to an accident. Safety engineering principles are more suitable to deal with uncertainties that defy quantification. In many design tasks, the combined use of both methodologies is preferable.

    Cross-cultural studies have found national differences in how concerned people are about online privacy. However, it has not yet been settled what causes this variation, and several factors have been proposed in the literature, including internet habituation, individualism, and uncertainty avoidance. Here we investigate these factors by two studies. In the first, we examine the association between online privacy concerns and a new measure of online self-disclosure norms that we introduce. We find that this measure is significantly associated with two established instruments of online privacy concerns in the literature. In the second, we analyze previously unpublished data from a questionnaire on online self-disclosure norms as assessed by this new measure. It includes replies from 18,046 adult respondents from 57 countries and six continents. We find that norms in favor of more restrictive online self-disclosure are weaker in countries with higher levels of internet penetration (r = −0.56, p < .001). Our findings suggest that higher internet penetration in a country reduces online privacy concerns. The results support the idea that habituation to online environments decreases privacy risk perceptions. An implication is that preferences for online privacy are likely to decline over time in countries where internet penetration is still low. Lastly, in conflict with previous studies, our analyses do not support the theory that online privacy concerns are associated with national cultures related to individualism or uncertainty avoidance as measured by Hofstede's indices.

    The potential of learning analytics (LA) to improve learning and teaching is high. Yet, the adoption of LA across countries still remains low. One reason behind this is that the LA services often do not adequately meet the expectations and needs of their key stakeholders, namely students and teachers. Presently, there is limited research focusing on the examination of the students' expectations of LA across countries, especially in the Nordic, largely highly digitalized context. To fill this gap, this study examines Swedish students' attitudes of LA in a higher education institution. To do so, the validated survey instrument, Student Expectations of Learning Analytics Questionnaire (SELAQ) has been used. Through the application of SELAQ, the students' ideal and predicted expectations of the LA service and their expectations regarding privacy and ethics were examined. Data were collected in spring 2021. 132 students participated in the study. The results show that the students have higher ideal expectations of LA compared to the predicted ones, especially in regards to privacy and ethics. Also, the findings illustrate that the respondents have low expectations in areas related to the instructor feedback, based on the analytics results. Further, the results demonstrate that the students have high expectations on the part of the university in matters concerning privacy and ethics. In sum, the results from the study can be used as a basis for implementing LA in the selected context.

    This paper presents an explorative study of the human activity of creating metadata, done with the purpose of exploring the practices of this activity and how those can potentially impact the utility of the metadata as it is exposed on a level that enables semantic collaboration, like the Semantic Web. Previous research around human metadata creation seems to indicate that how the activity is carried out has a common core, but is unique in each situation on how it can be improved. The data for this study was gathered through interviews and analyzed using activity theory. The analysis of the data gathered through the interviews indicate that the main objective of the activity is to enable discovery within a collection. Metadata is however created with a community of users in mind, which is sometimes reflected in metadata creation guidelines. These guidelines can in turn impact the discoverability across these communities as metadata is exposed on the Semantic Web.

    With the current challenges for the healthcare such as increased demand for care, financial and resource constraints along with rapid changes and complexity there is high believe in digital innovation and digitalisation to efficacy resources and aid in delivering a safer, more accessible and patient centred valuable care.

    There is a digitalisation that is ongoing, being used and implemented over several different areas of healthcare. Since healthcare can be seen as a complex adaptive system, there is a need to understand several agents. The aim is to gather more knowledge about perceptions within the physiotherapy staff and give recommendations and directions for improvements regarding digital innovation.

    Opinions about digital innovation have been gathered with open interviews and a semisystematic literature review with focus on physiotherapy. Too find subjective data the mixed method Q methodology was applied.

    The open interviews resulted in eight categories: digital innovation, digital innovation being used, digital innovation not used, management, obstacles, education, wishful thinking, applications and systems and associated opinions. The semi-systematic literature review showed on a rapid scientifically development, 25 articles was found and thematically analysed. 140 cited viewpoints and facts was merged with the results from the open interviews. Ten physiotherapists performed the q-sort consisting of 25 statements. Three factors were found. Interpreted as digital innovation optimism & patient oriented, digital innovation scepticism & management oriented and digital innovation sceptical optimism. Video-call technique is strongly encouraged by factor one contrary to factor two. Integrity is the major conflicting viewpoint between the factors. The result shows that gender can affect if a physiotherapist is either optimistic or sceptical to digital innovation. Using existing models such as UTAUT could improve acceptance about digital innovation. Education is perceived as important among all factors. Nine participants responded on baseline questions showing low knowledge of the term mHealth and little communication with IT departments.

    Those who gamble compulsively, and those who shop or buy in a compulsive manner share a number of common characteristics, stemming from similar impulse-control issues. As such, it is predicted that a lexical analysis of personal narratives of compulsion would share similarities. Using secondary data from an online mental health forum, Psychforums, the research analyzed narratives of compulsive gambling (n = 199) and compulsive buying (n = 196) using the automated text analysis tool, LIWC. The results indicated that compulsive buying narratives rated significantly higher in clout and emotional tone and significantly lower in authenticity, with no significant differences noted in analytical thinking between the two compulsion narratives. Recommendations for future research include that demographic variables be incorporated and that narratives sourced from different online platforms should be contrasted.

    Mobility has long been a central concern in research within the Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) community, particularly when it comes to work and how being on the move calls for reorganizing work practices. We expand this line of work with a focus on nomadic leisure practices. Based on interviews with eleven participants, we present a study that illuminates how digital technologies are used to shape and structure long-distance cycling. Our main analysis centers on bike touring as a nomadic leisure practice and on how it offers a radical departure from traditional modes of structuring work and life, and thus, complicates the relationship between work and leisure. We complement this with an account of managing the uncertainties of nomadicity by focusing on participants’ experiences with arranging overnighting and network hospitality. We offer this study, firstly, as one response to the call for more diversity in the empirical cases drawn upon in theorizing nomadic work and leisure practices, but more productively, as an opportunity to reflect upon the temporal and spatial logics of digital technologies and platforms and how they frame our attitudes towards the interplay between work and leisure.

    This paper presents an evaluation of IT service delivery by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from Nicaragua at the end of 2009. The evaluation is supported by a methodological approach based on IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v.2 concepts and case study techniques. The evaluation involved three ISPs that are nation-wide Internet Service Providers with more than ten years running. We describe the current practices and limitations of IT service delivery in ISPs from Nicaragua. Finally, we argue that existing IT service delivery practices amongst ISPs have matches to ITIL processes, although the ITIL processes are not known amongst them.

    Every day we face numerous lifestyle decisions, some dictated by habits and somemore conscious, which may or may not promote sustainable living. Aided by digital technology,sustainable behaviors can diffuse within social groups and inclusive communities. This paperoutlines a longitudinal experimental study of social influence in behavioral changes towardsustainability, in the context of smart residential homes. Participants are students residing inthe housing on campus referred to as KTH Live-In Lab, whose behaviors will be observedw.r.t. key lifestyle choices, such as food, resources, mobility, consumption, and environmentalcitizenship. The focus is on the preparatory phase of the case study and the challengesand limitations encountered during its setup. In particular, this work proposes a definitionof sustainability indicators for environmentally significant behaviors, and hypothesizes that,through digitalization of a household into a social network of interacting tenants, sustainableliving can be promoted.

Det har visat sig omöjligt att hålla jämna steg med efterfrågan och att uppfylla uppställda miljömål. Långt över en miljard människor drabbas dagligen. Försöken att påverka efterfrågan har hittills bara haft marginella effekter. Med hjälp av ett integrerat informations- och betalsystem och dynamisk prissättning i realtid skulle stora framsteg kunna göras. Stockholmsregionen som redan infört trängselskatt har goda möjligheter att ta täten i försöken att skapa en hållbar stadstrafik.

    Digitalization is the societal change process in which new ICT-based solutions bring forward completely new ways of doing things, new businesses and new movements in the society. Digitalization also provides completely new ways of addressing issues related to global health. This paper provides an overview of the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) and in what way the field has contributed to international development in different regions of the world. Additionally, it outlines the United Nations' new sustainability goals from December 2015 and what these could contribute to the development of global health and its relationship to digitalization. Finally, it argues why and how HCI could be adopted and adapted to fit the contextual needs, the need for localization and for the development of new digital innovations. The research methodology is mostly qualitative following an action research paradigm in which the actual change process that the digitalization is evoking is equally important as the scientific conclusions that can be drawn. In conclusion, the paper argues that digitalization is fundamentally changing the society through the development and use of digital technologies and may have a profound effect on the digital development of every country in the world. But it needs to be developed based on local practices, it needs international support and to not be limited by any technological constraints. Particularly digitalization to support global health requires a profound understanding of the users and their context, arguing for user-centred systems design methodologies as particularly suitable.

    The semantic web uses ontologies to improve searching since ontologies provide a richer semantic model of content by expressing terms and relationships. However, a problem with the web is the large number of ontologies, which complicates searching. To maximize the capability of the search, the ontologies need to be combined to obtain complex answers. Usually, the ontologies are created without following any guidelines and, therefore, combining them is not a simple task, especially when ensuring a consistent result. We propose using meta-agents on top of software agents in a multi-agent system to resolve the use and the combination of multiple ontologies and to enable searching and reasoning. The software agents search for parts in the ontologies corresponding to the user-request and meta-agents combine the results from the agents. The meta-agents also partition the ontologies into consistent sets and then combine multiple ontologies into meaningful and logically consistent structures. For this purpose, we extend an existing mapping and alignment algorithm used for communication between agents. The use of multi-agents gives advantages since they provide a parallel approach and, thereby, efficiently handle large numbers of ontologies in order to accomplishtasks separately.

    Public knowledge about the differences in greenhouse gas emissions caused by the production and transportation of different kinds of food are generally low. People with an interest in choosing food with low greenhouse gas emissions must therefore either increase this "food carbon literacy" or be provided with such information when they decide what food to buy. Research about this specific kind of food literacy is, however, scarce, lacking both well-defined terminology and interventions attempting to increase food carbon literacy. In this paper we provide a framework for future research in the area by defining "food carbon literacy", serving as a starting point for categorizing, comparing, and generalizing future research findings. Drawing on previous work on other kinds of literacies, we distinguish between (1) food carbon literacy, (2) food product carbon literacy, (3) food handling carbon literacy, and (4) financial food carbon literacy. We have furthermore developed and tested a digital behavior change intervention in the form of a digital grocery list used on mobile phones. The list works as other digital grocery shopping lists, but also displays the CO(2)e footprint of the food added to the list, thereby enabling the user to change products at the planning stage and increase their food carbon literacy. It was tested on a group of 38 people for a duration of 2 weeks. The goals of the pilot study were to investigate quantitatively whether such a tool would increase food carbon literacy, and to investigate qualitatively how such a tool could be used and designed. The results show a strong increase in food carbon literacy for food the respondents had added to their grocery lists, but also for food that had not been added to their lists, indicating a generalization of the knowledge. Finally, we provide implications for the design of such systems, based on the qualitative evaluation.

    Classifiers are often opaque and cannot easily be inspected to gain understanding of which factors are of importance. We propose an efficient iterative algorithm to find the attributes and dependencies used by any classifier when making predictions. The performance and utility of the algorithm is demonstrated on two synthetic and 26 real-world datasets, using 15 commonly used learning algorithms to generate the classifiers. The empirical investigation shows that the novel algorithm is indeed able to find groupings of interacting attributes exploited by the different classifiers. These groupings allow for finding similarities among classifiers for a single dataset as well as for determining the extent to which different classifiers exploit such interactions in general.

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the emergence of lock-in in large-scale projects. Although large-scale projects have been studied for decades, most studies have applied economic or psychological perspectives to emphasize decision-making processes at the project front-end. Of those studies, some have focused on poor decision-making due to lock-in and the escalating commitments of decision-makers to ineffective courses of action. However, little is known about the way that project decisions are affected by organizational and inter-organizational contexts and the actors involved. Understanding decisions from a process viewpoint with a long-term (inter-) organizational perspective will lead to a better understanding of lock-in and the overall performance of large-scale projects. This qualitative research is based on a case study. The research setting is the multi-actor Madrid-Barcelona High-Speed rail Line (HSL) project in Spain. Through observations, interviews, several project documents, and report analysis, we explore the processual nature of the choices made during the course of the project. We consider the contextual conditions that give rise or support the emergence of lock-in in relation to pre- and post-project effects, institutional influences, and management practices that create action spaces at the project level. Our findings suggest that lock-in emergence requires the recognition of the long-term (inter-) organizational perspective regarding mechanisms and effects rather than confining decisions to the individual or single actor control in the front-end of projects. Based on organizational theory, the main contribution of this paper is to enrich our understanding of the emergence of lock-in using process theories.

    Abstract [en]

    Initial internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) programs for anxiety disorders in children and young people (CYP) have been developed and evaluated, however these have not yet been widely adopted in routine practice. The lack of guidance and formalized approaches to the development and dissemination of iCBT has arguably contributed to the difficulty in developing iCBT that is scalable and sustainable beyond academic evaluation and that can ultimately be adopted by healthcare providers. This paper presents a consensus statement and recommendations from a workshop of international experts in CYP anxiety and iCBT (#iCBTLorentz Workshop Group) on the development, evaluation, engagement and dissemination of iCBT for anxiety in CYP.
