    Abstract [en]

    The development of low cost directly printable RFID tag antennas is essential for item level tracking. We present evolutionary design approach to achieve robust extremely versatile RFID antennas on paper/flexible substrates which allow a simple integration directly on, e.g., paperboard in a roll-to-roll production line. Fully integrated printed tags for "green" electronics are designed for operability in frequencies 866-868 MHz & 902-928 MHz. We present benchmarking results for various challenges of antennas in terms of ruggedness, reliability and flexing performance.

    Abstract [en]

    For the first time, two-arm planar sinuous antenna is demonstrated to realize the emerging concept of integrating RFID functionalities along with sensors and other wireless applications for "green" electronics. In-depth, parametric analysis is performed for the proposed antenna which is fabricated on a paper substrate using revolutionary inkjet printing technology to develop a system-level solution for ultra-low-cost mass production of multipurpose wireless tags in an approach that could be easily expanded to other microwave and wireless "cognition" applications. The proposed antenna exhibits excellent performance throughout several RFID ISM bands and for other wireless applications in its operational range from 0.8 to 3.0 GHz.

    Abstract [en]

    A novel method for the design of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) dual-band bandpass filter is presented in this paper. Dual-band response is achieved by TE101 mode and diagonal TE201 (TE102) mode. The resonant frequency of TE101 mode can be adjusted by the location of perturbation vias while the resonant frequency of diagonal TE201 (TE102) mode keeps unchanged. A design example with second-order filter response is given and verified by experiments. The vertically stacked SIW resonators are used here to save the size.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents the design of one dimensional broadband phase shifters based on a new class of negative refraction index transmission line. The proposed phase shifter here consists of conventional microstrip line and Negative Refraction Index (NRI) transmission line (TL) in which ideal operational amplifiers are applied to form the periodically loaded negative-impedance-converted inductors and capacitors. It is demonstrated that variations in inductors and capacitors can produce arbitrary phase shifts while maintaining the same overall length. Also, the NRI-TL is non-dispersive so that the new phase shifter can be used in many new broadband devices.

    A compact circular AXE-shaped patch antenna is presented for miniaturized application. The proposed design is further modified for dual band 2.4/5.5 GHz wireless application. The measured return loss is from 2.38 similar to 2.42 GHz and 5.41 similar to 5.59 GHz suitable for dual band WLAN application. Same design procedure can also be applied for miniaturized applications. The miniaturization process shifts the resonance at 1.71 GHz instead of 2.5 GHz in case of simple circular patch. The radiation pattern and gain for dual band wireless antenna is also measured and presented.

    The transmission characteristics of the parallel strip lines (PSLs) are studied. Then a novel dual-band power divider using PSLs is introduced. It consists of four pi-form arms and one 180 degrees phase swap structure. The pi-form arms are capable of achieving ideal impedance matching at two different frequency bands with an arbitrary power dividing ratio k: The 180 degrees phase swap structure is frequency independent, which is used to obtain high port to port isolation. Theoretical analysis and general design procedure of this power divider with arbitrary k and F (central frequency ratio of two different frequency bands) are presented. Then, a sample operating at 1.3 and 3.5 GHz with k = 1 and F = 2. is fabricated and tested. Experimental results show that this power divider operates at the designed dual frequency bands, and the isolation is more than 20 dB. Good agreements among theoretical, simulated, and experimental results are obtained.

    A simple coplanar monopole antenna of circular disk is proposed for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. Coplanar ground plane is slightly modified with an arc-shaped cut, so that an improved impedance bandwidth, especially at the higher frequencies is achieved. The measured return loss from 2.28 similar to 38.2GHz is below -10dB and the measured radiation pattern is quasi omni-directional.

    An approach to realize left-handedness in microstrip transmission line by simultaneously loading it with split ring resonator and complementary split ring resonator is proposed. A transmission line individually loaded with either with SRR (-mu) or CSRR (-epsilon) has band rejection but when simultaneously loaded has a passband near the previously rejected band due to negative values of both -mu and -epsilon. i.e., left handedness. The design is compact, low pro. le and independent of the substrate permittivity. Simulation and experimental results are also presented and the design is suitable for devices like fiters and couplers.

    In this paper, a metamaterial-inspired miniaturization method for waveguide filter design is proposed. The transmission response and effective medium parameters of I-shaped resonator in metallic rectangular waveguide are first discussed. By embedding such an I-shaped resonator, a novel g/2-type inverter is then proposed ( g: the guided wavelength). The large effective refraction index with low loss which appears below the resonant frequency of the I-shaped resonator is skillfully exploited, and then the size of g/2-type inverter is greatly reduced with acceptable low insertion loss. The most negative permittivity of the I-shaped resonator at its resonant frequency produces an additional transmission zero which leads to sharp skirt selectivity in the upper side band. Using the novel g/2-type inverter, two improved waveguide filters are further designed with good performances. One has an extremely compact size. The other has further improved selectivity. Two such filters are finally fabricated and the measured results agree well with the simulated ones.

    A shorted pin circular axe-shaped antenna is analyzed for compact and dual band applications. Removing two symmetric arc-shaped areas from a simple circular patch lengthens the current path thus reduces the antenna size. Embedding and adjusting a shorting pin further shifts the resonance to a lower frequency and excites another high order mode. The frequency ratio varies between 1.639 similar to 2.616. The patch size is about 51% of the circular axe-shaped patch without shorting pin, and 85% of the simple circular patch antenna. Parametric analyses of the antenna model are presented in detail and a prototype is fabricated for experiment.

    A fourth-order dual-band microstrip band-stop filter is proposed in this paper. Folded stepped impedance resonators are implemented as well as capacitive gap and inductive grounded via, thus the dual-band performance can be obtained in merely one resonator. Besides its compact size, simplicity, and good spurious band suppression, the filter also features its excellent mid-band rejection and skirt characteristic which is achieved by four reflection zeros adjacent to the dual resonating frequencies. Controllable response of filter is realized by tuning of gap capacity and via inductance, and the theory is verified by both simulation and experimental results that agree well with each other.

    This paper presents an analysis of planar parabolic shaped dipoles using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The antenna is resistor-loaded to improve the bandwidth and shielded to suit ground penetrating radar (GPR) applications. The clutter level and the GPR response of the antenna when it is operating above both lossless and lossy mediums are analyzed. The input impedance and the radiation characteristics of the antenna are also described. The results are compared with those of the resistor-loaded bow-tie to assess the antenna's performance.

    This paper presents the realization of a tunable bandpass filter with high selectivity and low insertion loss using one tunable composite right/left-handed (CRLH) cell. The tunable CRLH cell is proposed with varactor diodes loaded both on series and shut circuits. Two shut circuits are designed to form the needed paralleled C-R and L-L, by which two transmission zeros beside the passband are obtained at the same time. Each varactor diode is shunted by a lumped capacitor for lower insertion loss. The filter is tuned by only one DC bias, which results in easily control and compact size. The measured results agree well with the simulated results, and a tunable range of the center frequency from 1.75 to 2.25GHz is achieved in measurement with the insertion loss less than 2.5dB.

    An elliptical base rhombic monopole antenna and frequency notched EBRM are proposed for low loss omni-directional ultra-wideband applications. The impedance bandwidth of simple rhombic monopole is improved with the help of semi-elliptical base and optimized for impedance matching of the order of -15 dB within impedance bandwidth. Frequency notched EBRM is realized by a U-shaped slot and optimized for WLAN. The measured results confirm impedance matching level of -15 dB, notched function with insertion level of 1.68 dB and omni-directional coverage over the impedance bandwidth.

    A closely-located MIMO antennas of tri-band with an inter-PIFA (Planner Inverted-F Antenna) spacing of only 20mm is proposed for WLAN mobile terminal applications. Two L-shaped slots etched on each PIFA are introduced appropriately to achieve high isolation at higher frequencies and tri-band property. The MIMO antenna can operate in the bands of 2.4-2.4812 GHz, 5.07-5.4 GHz and 5.64-6.61 GHz, and the mutual couplings are less than -16.5 dB, -27 dB and -23 dB, respectively. Radiation pattern, gain and efficiency are also measured. Our designed antenna has the advantages of closely-located structure, tri-band, high isolation, small variation of gain and high efficiency.

    The bandwidth of a printed antenna with a rotated rhombus slot is enhanced further by introducing 7 parasitic stripes, one of which is embedded on an edge of the rhombus slot downside while the others are on the upside. The mechanism of the wideband antenna is explained. The measured results indicate a large impedance bandwidth of 122.6% (1.59GHz-6.63 GHz) for VSWR < 2. The radiation patterns are also measured and relatively stable throughout the whole operating band.
