    Abstract [en]

Datapath manufactures satellite antenna for telecommunication systems. These antennas have a wide range of application scope and are used in extreme environments, in war zones and hotspots. The antennas are very heavy, difficult to transport so the project group was asked to come up with a new design of light, foldable and easy transportable antenna reflectors. Datapath chose the M-Model for the future development, which was made for the military use. The existing antennas are very heavy and solid which makes it difficult to transport because it takes a large amount of space. The requirement for this project was to decrease the weight of the reflector by 50 percent and the transportation volume by 20 percent. The Bachelor thesis generated lots of different design and concepts with different choices of materials for the reflector, but only two concepts fulfilled all qualifications. The first concept was decided to have a body made completely out of Carbon fiber reinforced silicone (CFRS). This material is strong and robust once it unfolds and can stand external forces generated by strong winds, but it is very easy to fold it back and most important it is ultralight. The second concept was a reflector made of reflective fabric with an external shell construction made of polyethylene. Both of these concepts fulfill Datapath's requirements with aspect on weight, transportation volume and strength.

    Abstract [en]

The project was carried out in cooperation with Sodertalje Hospital, whose goal is to make a manufactural framework for a flatbed scooter and post- cart.

The work consists of 4 different phases which were problem analysis, faculty gathering, conceptual design and compilation of the report. In the problem analysis phase, a study visit was conducted at Sodertalje Hospital with a view to identifying the problem. In addition, faculty gathering has been conducted in the form of visits to various hospitals in Sweden to investigate as many solutions as possible. On conceptual design, several of engineering tools have been used as CAD modeling, analysis and matrices with several methods to reach the perfect solution for the hospital. During the last phase, the entire work has been documented and a final result has been reported.

The main problem of the project was that the existing post-cart was too heavy and difficult to maneuver at Sodertalje hospital

The report also contains a whole lot of recommendations, this in order to provide several alternatives to different future solutions and is likely to be more manufactured.

The end result includes a manufactural post-cart and frame, which is more adapted than the existing one. It has light weight and is easier to maneuver. The frame will be able to be mounted on the existing Monark flatbed scooter.

On the influence of car brake system parameters on particulate matter emissions2018In: Wear, ISSN 0043-1648, E-ISSN 1873-2577, Vol. 396, p. 67-74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The influence of car brake system parameters on particulate matter emissions was investigated using a pin-on-disc tribometer. Samples from a low-steel friction material and a cast iron disc were tested for different sliding velocities, nominal contact pressures and frictional powers. Disc temperatures were also measured. Their impact on total concentration, size distribution, particle coefficient and transition temperature was analysed. Results show that frictional power is the most significant brake system parameter. However, temperature, as a response parameter, is the most influential, inducing a shift towards the ultrafine particulate fraction and raising emissions. A transition temperature, independent of the system parameters, was identified.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was to study continuous improvements and to observe their way of working with CI today at one of Sandvik SRP’s departments called West, and to come up with concrete suggestions for further improvements. In other words, to analyse the way WEST is working at present and to create a system in a working environment, which streamlines the work of continuous improvement. Sandvik has built this department recently, where process machining of various parts takes place.

The thesis began with a literature study on continuous improvements such as the background, implementation of CI using Bessant's five levels and the key factors. The authors chose PDCA and 5s for further study. The purpose of choosing these two quality management tools was to get the better understanding of basics of those tools which plays an important role in the area of continuous improvements.

After this, observation was carried out as well as several interviews. The observation was consisted of staff meetings, examination of various machines and processes used in West, such as finishing, welding, etc. Interviews were conducted with Production Engineer Magnus, Operational Excellence Lars Melbrand, and Production Manager Verdana from another department, whose job is to work with continuous improvement, as well as several other machine operators / Team Leaders.

The status analysis was done by sketching a model tree to get a clear view of the current situation in different areas in order to eventually find the cause of the problems that arise and which prevents the company from constantly improving. In addition, the working methods which are used today were analysed and misconceptions that are found among the employees for example related to PDCA. There is no actual system built for training staff at the company so that they could get the opportunity to learn those new systems and methods which are implemented. The communication between machine operators and production engineers is low and there are no goals connected to the individual or group for continuous improvement.

After analysing the current situation of the department and finding out that WEST lies between level 2 and 3 at Bessant's five level theory (2003), the authors have presented a number of suggestions in various areas to take the department to the higher level. This was being done by comparing Kaye & Anderson's key factors, which are ten checkpoints to get a clear picture of the organization's current position and capacity to achieve new aims.

Results of the analysis illustrated by the model tree which can be seen under the heading Results. This new model tree is an improved version of the former model tree that showed how Sandvik works with continuous improvements today. In that new tree, the areas have been analysed and improved.

Optimering av robotcell2018Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This degree project was performed at the gearbox assembly at Scania Södertälje. On a production line where gearbox assembly takes place, a robot is currently working to tighten screws to assemble retarders on gearboxes.

The purpose of the work was to investigate the current state of the robot cell capacity and the complementarity of the buffer areas adjacent to it. In order to cope with takt time cuts, capacity increasing conceptual solutions were developed.

The work was delimited to address disruptions, layout changes, optimal buffer size calculation, to propose product changes, and not to develop implementation plans for the conceptual solutions.

Literature studies coupled to Scanias production philosophy in production system development were conducted. Based on this, a systematic working methodology has been formed.

In order to define a zero state, data has been collected in the form of timing of the robot process, physical layout measurements and flow data from computer systems. The collected data was used to distinguish when and where in the process there are non-value adding factors. With an improvement tool, these non-value-adding moments were analyzed to be used as the basis for creating well-defined problems. Based on these problems, several conceptual solutions were created with time savings. These solutions have been packaged to meet the time-saving needs that different takt times and product mixes entail.

As a result of the analysis, it appears that the robot cell today is able to manage an optimal mix without fully using the adjacent buffer locations. For a continuous flow with only retarder included, the process needs to be improved according to developed conceptual package solutions in order not to form a bottleneck and fill in the preceding buffer locations.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the following thesis project is to decrease the payment value at JästbolagetAB, by improving the efficiency of logistics, which we will be studying to see what are thethings that can be improved. The improvement will be through the help of couple ofsuggested solutions; which we will recommend through this report. The mentioned suggested solutions will be based on a specific theory on logistics. In order to study improvement opportunities, we visited Jästbolaget multiple times for thepast couple of weeks, periodically. During that time, the group measured the cycle times forboth filling and emptying.

We have calculated the investment costs, and we used these calculations to concludemultiple improvement proposals. We concluded that quantities are low to build the cistern. Finally, after all the research we have done, we think that it is possible for the Jästbolagetcompany to implement our suggested solutions.

Logistikprinciper: En gradering av befintliga logistikprinciper på Scanias motorbearbetning2018Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report is about logistics principles that involve different logistics strategies to achieve the best working method which helps to improve a work environment and optimize productivity. The logistics principles that are being used today on Scania’s engine processing workshop are mostly based on past experiences and therefore there is a lack of scientific basis.

The purpose of the report is to analyze theories within logistics and then based on facts confirm and rank the principles that has been developed by the Logistics Department of Scania’s engine processing workshop. In theory part, the focus has been on giving a greater insight into the subject of logistics principles and term other principles that affect logistics at Scania.

The collection of the theories for the report was conducted through a literature study where course literature and data collection were processed. Interviews and surveys have been conducted among the staff of the relevant department to gather information that gives a better picture of the current situation.

In order to rank the principles, a theoretical measuring instrument called Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to analyze a decision problem. The method can visualize how different parameters have an impact on each other and how paired comparisons provide a priority order of input.

The logistics principles were divided in four categories and used as inputs in the AHP analysis. The result was then used to rank the logistics principles.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Warehousing activities are essential and can be crucial to the organizations overall performance and success, especially for SMEs (small and mediumsized enterprises). The warehouse operations can be particularly challenging if the organization is in a rapid growth phase and if the stored article is characterized by requirements. In order to effectively carry out the warehouse operations, organizations need to develop a warehouse design. However, today’s research does not acknowledge how SME’s with above-mentioned prerequisites should form such warehouse design. Purpose: This study aims at proposing a warehouse design that takes into account the requirements of the article. Furthermore, the study intends to examine the consequences of a rapid growth phase on an SME's warehouse. Method: This paper has studied the organization Nordic Green Design AB, a Swedish SME, whose articles consists of ornamental plants. These products require specific care such as temperature, light and irrigation regulation. The data collection was based on interviews with the organization's warehouse staff and marketing manager. Additionally, data was collected through observations of the organization's existing warehouse design. The data has then been analyzed based on the theoretical reference frame. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of identifying needs and requirements when developing a warehouse design, especially when the article is characterized by requirements. The determination of needs and requirements determines the foundation of which storage management methods that are applicable in the warehouse design. By shifting focus to the determination of needs and requirements, more efficient storage can be achieved. Furthermore, the study indicates that a rapid growth phase contributes to extensive organizational challenges. The results of the study suggest that a decentralized organizational structure has the best prerequisites for managing these challenges.

MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNICATION RISKS: EVIDENCEFROM INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS CASE STUDY2010In: International conference proceedings PM-05 -  Advancing project management for the 21st century “Concepts, tools & techniques for managing successful projects”,  Heraklion, Crete, Greece., 2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The realization of project requires collaboration between many different participants.  The majority of interactions happen on the project management team level. The general believe is that teams/groups can achieve more efficiency if they use effective instruments of risk management in their communication process. The aim of this study is to investigate how the level of communication risks varies between different project group development stages and how project manager can help project group to reach the maximum effectiveness of communication. The study analyzes different communication barriers that project group meets while working at project. The investigation was performed by using qualitative analysis method in four different projects of an engineering and consulting company involved with mining industries in South Africa. Interpersonal relationships were measured by FIRO model and communication risks were evaluated by a typical risk analysis method. Results of investigations show that communication risks are directly affected by the stage of group development and different factors of group development tend to synchronize with each other. The total amount of risks tends to decrease as group moves from one stage to another on the FIRO model. For improving communication process in project groups the dynamic nature of FIRO model should be considered. The risks will not be settled down unless the group stands in “Openness” stage and the group development stage is vulnerable to any changes; the environmental effects should be carefully followed for preventive action.
