Dynamic At-stop Real-time Information Displays for Public Transport: Effects on Customers2007In: Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, ISSN 0965-8564, E-ISSN 1879-2375, Vol. 41, no 6, p. 489-501Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Dynamic at-stop real-time information displays are becoming more and more ubiquitous in modern public transport. Reactions and attitudes towards these systems are very positive. But there is a need to provide a comprehensive framework of the possible effects that these kinds of displays can have on customers. The seven main effects described in this paper are: (A) reduced wait time, (B) positive psychological factors, such as reduced uncertainty, increased ease-of-use and a greater feeling of security, (C) increased willingness-to-pay, (D) adjusted travel behaviour such as better use of wait time or more efficient travelling, (E) mode choice effects, (F) higher customer satisfaction and finally (G) better image. Two studies are presented in this paper. Study I supports and proves that perceived wait times can be reduced by 20% by employing a before-after implementation evaluation study with questionnaires on a tramline. Study II shows the effects of real-time displays on behaviour in the form of adjusted walking speeds, by using a behaviour observation method in a subway station. The effect framework does not claim completeness and many effects are related to each other. However, the framework is a useful basis for designing evaluation studies and provides arguments in favour of at-stop real-time information displays.

Green Train concept and interior design2014In: International Journal of Rail Transportation, ISSN 2324-8378, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 28-39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the Green Train research programme, the objective is to develop an attractive trainconcept in the form of a concept proposal based on economic assessments. Green Trainis to be an attractive express train for both business and leisure-time travellers. Highstandards of comfort can be motivated by passengers’ willingness to pay. One fundamentalidea is the wide carbody for services in Scandinavia to achieve lower total costsfor train traffic than a carbody with a normal, quite narrow European continentalprofile. The trains are thereby made shorter and 2 + 3 seating arrangements areoptimised for optimal comfort. Another principle is that the train must be designedto allow punctual station stops, also during periods of peak load. Boarding andalighting must take place within very tight margins, which means that doors, entrancesand luggage racks must be in well-considered locations and correctly dimensioned.

Green Train: Comfort evaluation of active secondary suspension2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

One of the ideas selected for development in the Green Train research and development programme is active secondary suspension. Bombardier Transportation, Sweden, has with support of KTH designed and tested both active lateral suspension (ALS) and active vertical suspension (AVS) that can improve the ride comfort and make higher speeds possible on existing tracks. The two active suspension systems were evaluated with passengers to allow KTH Railway Group to capture their perceived differences in ride comfort.

Our conclusion is that active secondary suspension (ALS/AVS) improves perceived comfort and makes it easier for passengers to move about the train while it is motion while an increase in speed (from category B to category C) has an opposite effect of approximately the same magnitude. This shows that active secondary suspension can contribute to permitting higher speeds on conventional lines with imperfect track geometry.

The higher uncompensated lateral force on bends resulting from higher speeds (category C), however, makes it significantly more difficult to move about the train for travellers with reduced mobility and this needs to be taken into consideration.

Comfort and good driver behaviour in bus and rail services2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

KTH  is  working  with  SL  and  bus  operators  to  penetrate  the role   of   the   driver's   behaviour   on   passenger's   perceived comfort.   We   measure   accelerations   and   do   simultaneous response  interviews  with  test  subjects.  We  will  try  to  find critical  levels  for  semi-static  acceleration,  jerks,  vibrations  and low-frequency accelerations. The latter causing motion sickness. This knowledge can be used for driver education and to design driver assistance tools

Driving styles and the effect on passengers: - Developing ride comfort indicatorsManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Poor ride experience in principle leads to lower attractiveness of the public transportation system. How big is the divers’ role for bus and rail passengers’ perceived comfort and how much are they affected by various misbehaviors? Interviews showed that heavy braking and cornering forces, jerks as well as uneven speed affect passengers' comfort experience.

Evaluation of passenger train concepts: Methods and results of measuring travellers' preferences in relation to cost1999Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

Politicians would like the railways to help to solve futuretransport and environmental problems. People can travel to andfrom work and on business during the day on modern trains whichare faster than any other alternative on journeys ofintermediate length. Moreover, travelling times on comfortabletrains can be utilised more effectively than those in cars, buses and aircraft.

One problem nowadays is that it is often difficult tooperate rail traffic with sufficient business profitability. Atthe same time, many people feel that travelling by train is tooexpensive. This is primarily due to the fact that it isexpensive to produce trains and rail traffic. In some cases, the railway has to reduce scale and, in many cases, trainservices must be made more attractive.

This project aims to find means of reducing the cost andthereby the ticket price and, at the same time, enhance thelevel of attractiveness so that the profitability of therailways improves. This will enable rail traffic to expandunder its own steam(!) and play an increasinglyimportant part in the society of the future. This projectconcentrates on long-distance regional and inter-regional trainservices.

One of the objectives in the KTH project entitled "Efficientpassenger trains for future passenger services", of which thisdissertation is a part, is "trains at half price". Thisobjective is thus interpreted as the new relationship betweenthe value of trains and the cost that can be obtained when thevalue increases and the cost level is reduced simultaneously. This project primarily investigates the importance of variouscharacteristics in passenger trains in terms of cost levels andthe way different timetable, comfort, on-board service andquality attributes are evaluated by passengers. By presentingthese evaluations in monetary terms, itis possible to comparethem with the corresponding cost.
