A tool for automatic enterprise architecture modeling2011Inngår i: Proceedings of the CAiSE Forum 2011, 2011, s. 25-32Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Enterprise architecture is an approach which aim to provide decision support based on organization-wide models. The creation of these models is however cumbersome as multiple aspects of an organization need to be considered. The Enterprise Architecture approach would be significantly less demanding if data used to create the models could be collected automatically. This paper illustrates how a vulnerability scanner can be utilized for data collection in order to automatically create enterprise architecture models. We show how this approach can be realized by extending an earlier presented Enterprise Architecture tool. An example is provided through a case study applying the tool on a real network.

The Enterprise Architecture Analysis Tool–Support for the Predictive, Probabilistic Architecture Modeling Framework2013Inngår i: 19th Americas Conference on Information Systems, AMCIS 2013: Hyperconnected WorldAnything, Anywhere, Anytime, Association for Information Systems, 2013, s. 3350-3364Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The business of contemporary organizations is heavily dependent on information systems. Business processes and IT are interwoven and numerous technologies are in use. How the involved systems affect each other or impact the organizations' business domain is often uncertain, thus decision-making regarding information technology is challenging. Enterprise architecture (EA) is a holistic, model-based management approach. Many of the available EA software tools focus on documenting and have limited analysis capabilities. In this article, a tool for EA analysis is presented, supporting the analysis of properties such as business fit, security, and interoperability. The tool is implemented to support the Predictive, Probabilistic Architecture Modeling Framework to specify and apply assessment frameworks for performing property analysis on EA models.

Modeling and managing business processes2010Inngår i: Handbook on Business Information Systems, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte Ltd , 2010, s. 93-116Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this chapter is to present tools and techniques for modeling and managing business processes. For this, business process modeling is defined and classified according to two levels of detail. These categories are chained together with the help of a transformation technique, which is explained with the help of an example. As soon as the number of processes increases, they cannot be managed manually. This motivates the need for a software system called a business process management system (BPMS). The properties of a BPMS are explained, and the components of a BPMS, which support the necessary requirements of managing processes, are also presented with their advantages. Also, the major principles of business process management (BPM) are presented in this chapter.

Fuzzy data warehouse for performance analysis2012Inngår i: Fuzzy Methods for Customer Relationship Management and Marketing: Applications and Classifications, IGI Global, 2012, s. 217-251Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The numeric values retrieved from a data warehouse may be difficult to interpret by business users, or may be interpreted incorrectly. Therefore, for more accurate understanding of numeric values, business users may require an interpretation in meaningful, non-numeric terms. However, if the transition between non-numeric terms is crisp, true values cannot be measured, and smooth transition between classes may not take place. To address that problem, the authors employ a fuzzy classification-based approach for data warehouse. For that, they present a fuzzy data warehouse modeling approach, which allows integration of fuzzy concepts without affecting the core of a classical data warehouse. The essence of the approach is that a meta-tables structure is added for relating non-numeric terms with numeric values. This enables integration of fuzzy concepts in dimensions and facts, while preserving the time-invariability of the data warehouse. Additional to that, the use of fuzzy approach allows analysis of data in both sharp and fuzzy manners. The proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study of a movie rental company.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the Predictive, Probabilistic Cyber Security Modeling Language ((PCySeMoL)-Cy-2), an attack graph tool that can be used to estimate the cyber security of enterprise architectures. (PCySeMoL)-Cy-2 includes theory on how attacks and defenses relate quantitatively; thus, users must only model their assets and how these are connected in order to enable calculations. The performance of (PCySeMoL)-Cy-2 enables quick calculations of large object models. It has been validated on both a component level and a system level using literature, domain experts, surveys, observations, experiments and case studies.

    An architecture modeling framework for probabilistic prediction2014Inngår i: Information Systems and E-Business Management, ISSN 1617-9846, E-ISSN 1617-9854, Vol. 12, nr 4, s. 595-622Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the design phase of business and IT system development, it is desirable to predict the properties of the system-to-be. A number of formalisms to assess qualities such as performance, reliability and security have therefore previously been proposed. However, existing prediction systems do not allow the modeler to express uncertainty with respect to the design of the considered system. Yet, in contemporary business, the high rate of change in the environment leads to uncertainties about present and future characteristics of the system, so significant that ignoring them becomes problematic. In this paper, we propose a formalism, the Predictive, Probabilistic Architecture Modeling Framework (P(2)AMF), capable of advanced and probabilistically sound reasoning about business and IT architecture models, given in the form of Unified Modeling Language class and object diagrams. The proposed formalism is based on the Object Constraint Language (OCL). To OCL, P(2)AMF adds a probabilistic inference mechanism. The paper introduces P(2)AMF, describes its use for system property prediction and assessment and proposes an algorithm for probabilistic inference.

From conventional to multiversion data warehouse: Practical issues2009Inngår i: Evolving Application Domains of Data Warehousing and Mining: Trends and Solutions, IGI Global, 2009, s. 41-63Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Data warehouse is not an autonomous data store, because it depends upon its operational source(s) for data population. Due to changes in real-world scenarios, operational sources may evolve, but the conventional data warehouse is not developed to handle the modifications in evolved operational sources. Therefore, instance and schema changes in operational sources cannot be adapted in the conventional data warehouse without loss of information. Multiversion data warehouses are proposed as an alternative to handle these problems of evolution. In this chapter we discuss and illustrate how versioning is implemented and how it can be used in practical data warehouse lifecycle. It is designed as a tutorial for users to collect and understand the concepts behind a versioning solution. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to collect and integrate the concepts, issues and solutions of multiversion data warehouses in a tutorial-like approach, to provide a unified source for users that need to understand version functionality and mechanisms.

Semi-star schema for operational and analytical requirements of SMEs2009Inngår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making, ISSN 1462-4621, E-ISSN 1741-5187, Vol. 10, nr 1-2, s. 33-52Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Decision-making is a very complex process, as it requires complete knowledge and analysis of the business happenings. Large organisations are using data warehouse for analysis of their business because of its specialised properties. But, these organisations bear high maintenance cost, if operational sources are changed. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford development and maintenance cost of data warehouse therefore their decision quality suffers. In order to equip these enterprises with data warehousing functionalities, key-properties of DW are analysed and decision-support (analytical) requirements of SMEs are collected. Based on the analysis, semi-star schema is proposed and evaluated for its advantages. In our study, we have found that semi-star schema can be used for fulfilling operational and analytical requirements of SME.

    Requirements for a Business Process Model Repository: A Stakeholders' Perspective2010Inngår i: BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS, PROCEEDINGS  / [ed] Abramowicz W; Tolksdorf R, 2010, Vol. 47, s. 158-170Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Reuse of business process models is the act of designing business processes by using existing process models. Reuse of business process models has been considered as a way to reduce the cost of modeling business processes from scratch. In order to support reuse a critical mass of process models is required which justifies the effort of maintaining a process model repository. However, recent studies show that complete repositories which can support reuse are not yet available. One of the reasons is that stakeholder requirements for process model repositories have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to define requirements of a process model repository from stakeholders' (researchers and practitioners) perspective. In this study, we start by eliciting preliminary requirements (defined as propositions) through an exploratory study followed by an empirical validation of the propositions. Based on the analysis of the results we define as a set of requirements for a process model repository.

Towards Cross Language Process Model Reus: A Language Independent Representation of Process Models2009Inngår i: Practice Of Enterprise Modeling, Proceedings / [ed] Persson A; Stirna J, Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2009, Vol. 39, s. 176-190Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Process model reuse is becoming a key approach to addressing the challenges of modeling business processes from scratch. A repository is, therefore, essential to store and manage process models for future reuse. In this paper, we develop a logical data model that enables a Universal Process Repository to store process models in the form of process elements, independent of any process modelling language. In order to store process models in the process repository we propose an algorithm that automatically extracts data from the repository and converts them to process models on the fly. Finally, we use a case study to present data stored about a process model in the repository and to illustrate the development of process models from the data stored in the repository.

    Towards a Goal-Driven Approach for Business Process Improvement Using Process-Oriented Data Warehouse2011Inngår i: Business Information Systems / [ed] Abramowicz, W, Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2011, s. 111-122Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An emerging approach for business process analysis is to use business intelligence practices by employing data warehouse and decision-making techniques. However, little work has been done on developing core methods and tools to guide process analysis and improvement. Our research addresses this issue by introducing a goal-driven approach for business process improvement using process warehouse. In this paper, we present our three step method and its evaluation through an empirical study. The results showed that the impact of applying our method for process improvement has been perceived positively.

    Abstract [en]

Development of Star model for data warehouse (DW) requires ample amount of time, experience, expertise and adequate knowledge of data warehouse designing steps. As an alternative to data warehouse designing steps, transformation techniques are used. These techniques transform ER model (of relational OLTP) to Star model/s. In this study, we present and evaluate a systematic approach for transformation of ER model to Star model. Based on an experiment, we prove that, by using our approach, inexperienced designers can produce Star models identical to the star models produced by experienced data warehouse designers.

Towards goal-driven access to process warehouse: Integrating goals with process warehouse for business process analysis2011Inngår i: Proc. - Int. Conf. Res. Challenges Inf. Sci., 2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Analysis and improvement of business processes, one of the core phases in the BPM life cycle, is becoming on top of the agenda for many enterprises. An emerging approach to analyze business processes is to use the business intelligence approaches that attempt to facilitate the analytical capabilities of business process management systems by implementing process-oriented data warehouse and mining techniques. However, very little work has been done on employing business orientation in the design and utilization of process warehouse, which greatly limit the number of users who are able to fully exploit the potential of warehouse technology. The approach presented in this paper, addresses that limitation by attempting to integrate business goals with warehouse. The proposed approach to integration spans across two levels, conceptual and implementation; the first defines the concepts that are used to relate goals and process warehouse; the latter is used to implement the concepts and the relations, to link warehouse data and goal records in relational databases. The proposed approach enhances the way users access warehouse data and interpret the data. To facilitate the use of the proposed approach we have implemented a prototype. The evaluation results, though preliminary, provides evidence of the usefulness of our approach.

A Goal-Oriented Approach for Business Process Improvement Using Process Warehouse Data2009Inngår i: PRACTICE OF ENTERPRISE MODELING, PROCEEDINGS  / [ed] Persson A; Stirna J, 2009, Vol. 39, s. 84-98Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In a process-oriented enterprise management, process optimization focuses on studying and evaluating existing processes, such as utilization of resources and identification of problems in the process flow and functionality, for facilitating potential improvements. Conventional data warehouses do not provide information necessary for studying processes, such as executed process activities, utilized resources, or control-flow. Thereby, decisions on process improvements either cannot be taken, or they are taken without complete information. Additionally, process improvements methods commonly suffer from a number of limitations with respect to their complexity, efficiency and degree of automation. In this study, we consider process-oriented data warehouses and thereby we identify the information required from such awarehouse, to facilitate a semi-automatic method for improving processes, starting from established business goals toward concrete decisions. A case study from the Swedish health care sector is used to ground and illustrate the presented method.

    Abstract [en]

Process analysis and improvement, one of the core phases in the business process management life cycle, is reaching the top of the agenda for many enterprises and organizations. An emerging approach to analyzing business processes involves the use of process-oriented data warehouses to collect information about executed processes to enable their detailed analysis and thereby provide bases for possible improvements. However, very little work has been carried out on employing business orientation in the design and utilization of a process warehouse. The approach presented in this study addresses that limitation by proposing a method that relates business goals to the information from the warehouse. To do so, we start by defining a desired goal structure that concerns an existing business process. The obtained goal model is firstly utilized for scoping and designing a corresponding data model for a process warehouse, and further for retrieving the information from the warehouse to examine the fulfillment of the goals of interest. The key benefits of the proposed method are the provision of the relevant and accurate business process information as well as tracing the process-related goals to the process execution data and further to the analysis of the process. As validation of the proposed method, we develop a prototype, and a healthcare process is used as an illustrative example. Also, to demonstrate the method quality, we perform an experiment on the effectiveness of the information access and retrieval.

    Abstract [en]

Data Warehouse provides an opportunity to analyze businesses in order to precise decision- making, various tools has been build and used for such purpose. But due to static structure of DW it is unable to manage changes in external sources, also simulating various scenarios can increase the decision efficiency, for such purpose Multi-Version Data Warehouse is proposed which contains two types of versions called real and alternative. But due to diversity in simulations two types of alternative versions has been proposed. Also for querying these versions we are extending the functionality of Synthetic Warehouse Builder. This study presents the challenges we are facing and visualizing during the extensions.

Research efforts that aim to develop methodological support for the redesign of business processes in the health-care domain are fragmented and performed in different domains. Due to these characteristics, it can be expected to be difficult to establish the state-of-the art with respect to this body of knowledge. This paper presents a research protocol that was developed prior to a literature review in this field, which illustrates the structure and rigor that we deem necessary to overcome the noted obstacles.

Integrated metamodel for security analysis2015Inngår i: 2015 48TH HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES (HICSS), IEEE Computer Society, 2015, s. 5192-5200Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes a metamodel for analyzing security aspects of enterprise architecture by combining analysis of cybersecurity with analysis of interoperability and availability. The metamodel extends an existing attack graph based metamodel for cybersecurity modeling and evaluation, (PCySeMoL)-Cy-2, and incorporates several new elements and evaluation rules. The approach improves security analysis by combining two ways of evaluating reachability: one which considers ordinary user activity and another, which considers technically advanced techniques for penetration and attack. It is thus permitting to evaluate security in interoperability terms by revealing attack possibilities of legitimate users. Combined with data import from various sources, like an enterprise architecture data repository, the instantiations of the proposed metamodel allow for a more holistic overview of the threats to the architecture than the previous version. Additional granularity is added to the analysis with the reachability need concept and by enabling the consideration of unavailable and unreliable systems.
