    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a two-dimensional analytical analysis and dimensioning procedure of a novel low-leakage linear transverse-flux machine (TFM). The two-dimensionalanalytical models approximate the complex three-dimensional fluxes of the TFM. Theanalysis is based upon how the different airgap permeances and the non-linear iron reluctances in the different machine sections vary, as the translator is traversed through the airgap. The reluctance networks for the magnetomotive force (MMF) of the magnets and for the current dependent armature-MMF are solved simultaneously. A 5-kW proof-of-concept machine is dimensioned and its performance predicted using the described procedure. The different performance defining parameters are derived as continuous functions of the translator position. The dependence of the machine power factor and the force capability upon the current loading, which is quite interesting when analysing TFMs, is also investigated.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the use of transverse-flux machines (TFMs) in a free-piston generator, an integration of a combustion engine and a linear electrical machine. For hybrid vehicles (the intended application), this integrated device has benefits in efficiency, emissions, reliability, etc. Conventional TFMs are dimensioned and their shortcomings illustrated. Several surface-mounted TFM designs are suggested. These designs, initially believed to be promising, are later discovered to be. poor during the three-dimensional finite-element method (3-D FEM) analysis. These designs suffered from a large axial pole-to-pole armature-flux leakage in the stator. This problem is solved in the proposed buried-magnets TFM variants, for which patents have been filed as well. A 5-kW proof-of-concept prototype of one such design is dimensioned that allowed the near fulfilment of 3-D FEM verifiable system demands. One phase. of this dimensioned three-phase prototype is built. Measurements on this,prototype showed that the use of short pole lengths in the machine had led to manufacturing defects. Nevertheless, the electromagnetic viability of the design could still be approximately verified.

    Voltage sags and voltage interruptions are huge power quality problems for many industries. Voltage sags cause apart from eventual tripping, large torque peaks, which may cause damage to the shaft or equipment connected to the shaft. This paper illustrates how the stator flux in a synchronous machine changes during voltage sags. These changes result in torque peaks. An analytical time dependent expression of the stator flux during voltage sags explains the behaviour of synchronous machines and why there are high torque and current peaks during voltage sags. Simulations verify the expressions, and illustrate the dependence of torque and current peaks on voltage sag duration and magnitude.

    Abstract [en]

    Increase of stray losses in the skewed rotor is mainly due to the cross-currents flowing from the conductor into the laminations. These losses are strongly related to the contact resistance between the bar and the laminations which depends on several factors including the casting process. A substantial reduction of cross-current losses can be achieved by changing or removing skew and by employing various slot combinations. Skew removal will cause some parasitic effects such as increase in the noise level and undesirable dips in the starting torque characteristics. To minimize these effects the rotor design needs to be modified and this could be achieved by introducing modulated slots. Two such types of modulated rotor slot designs are proposed in this paper. As a first step in the performance analysis, magnetic forces, which are the major sources of noise and vibration excitations, is considered. In order to study the newly proposed modulated slot designs, a spectral method is employed and analytically calculated electromagnetic forces are validated against FEM results. The analyses shows that the proposed new designs have better force characteristics compared to the conventional design, which illustrate the fact that better performance characteristics can be achieved by removing skew and introducing modulated slots.

    Abstract [en]

    Skewing which is commonly used in smaller sized induction motors for the reduction of magnetic noise causes higher cross currents in the rotor bars [1], [2]. This leads to a substantial increase of stray losses in the skewed rotor. Reduction of these losses can be achieved by eliminating skew, but at the cost of increased noise level and torque ripple in the motor. A design change is proposed and studied in this paper to minimize the increased noise level by introducing asymmetrical rotor slots. A simpler method of analysis using numerical calculations for the radial air gap forces is proposed and the vibration behavior of the motor is explained. The method is based on phase shift analysis of radial force waves in the air gap of the machine computed at certain equidistant points in the air gap with respect to the rotation of the rotor. Phase information obtained from the Fourier analysis is analyzed to identify and separate the order of the radial force waves i.e., the various modes of vibration. The final results showed improved force spectrum for the newly proposed asymmetrical rotor designs from which better performance of the newly proposed rotors is predicted. This method of analysis is compared with the previously obtained results from the noise measured on a standard motor and the results show a reasonable reliability of the proposed method to predict the noise level in the machine.

    Cogging torque calculations for a novel concept of a Transverse Flux Linear Free-Piston Generator2007Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates cogging force in a linear Transverse Flux Machine, TFM. 3D-FEM and 2D-FEM simulations has been performed and also two analytical methods have been applied. The analytical methods are based on the reluctant pressure method. Once the ¯eld distribution on the side of the tooth is known, the cogging force can be calculated by integrating the ¯eld. The agreement between the 2D-FEM and Conformal Mapping, CM, analytical method is good. However the 3D-FEM simulation results indicates a lower cogging force than the other two methods.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the electrical machine, which is one of the important parts in the FreePiston Energy Converter (FPEC). In the previous work it was found that one of the best candidate suitablefor the FPEC is a Transverse Flux Machine (TFM) due to the very tough requirements on the electrical ma-chine such as a low weight of the translator (movable part in the machine).This paper presents a new conceptof a linear TFM in which strong emphasis has been put to achieve a design that is simple to manufacture.Different types of the magnet confgurations on the translator have been investigated. It has been found thatthe buried magnet design suffers from a very high leakage to the nearby poles and is thus not suitable forthis type of machine. Another confguration, which has been investigated, is the surface mounted magnetconfguration. Analytical models for this confguration have been established. It has been found that thetough requirements, 4kN from a 6kg movable mass, can be achieved at the required speed, specifc powerand effciency

    The electrical machine is one of the key parts in the Free Piston Energy Converter (FPEC), and as such the electrical machine faces very tough requirements such as low weight of the translator and high power density. During the design process great emphasis has been put not only on the machine performance but also on the manufacturing process. This paper investigates a novel Transverse Flux Linear machine for the FPEC application. At first, the analytical calculations are performed based on some estimation of the leakage flux in the machine. However, during the FEM analysis and measurements it was obvious that a more detailed analysis was required in order to achieve a better agreement in results. A more detailed reluctance network is developed and used for the analysis. The results are compared with both FEM simulations and the measurements.

    In general Transverse Flux Machines (TFM) are considered to be complex and difficult to manufacture. However, there are some exceptions. In the linear TFM the flux plane is the same as for the conventional rotating electrical machine. Therefore, iron laminations from conventional rotating machines can be used to manufacture the stator. The manufacturing process of the stator becomes then more simple compared to the manufacturing process of the conventional linear machine. This paper deals with a novel design of a linear TFM machine for the free piston energy converter application. It describes earlier designed and manufactured prototypes and a new manufacturing approach in order to avoid the loss in flux and thereby also loss in the force production.

    Construction of a rotating power electronic converter for induction machine operation2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper describes the construction of the rotating power electronic converter. By mounting the power electronics on the rotor of an induction machine, the rotor winding can be made easily accessible without the use of slip-rings and brushes. This offers certain advantages regarding motor control. However, it is evident that the rotating mass, communication with the converter and maintaining the mechanical stability and reliability of the system are huge challenges that must be overcome. This paper describes some solution that are partly investigated and some solutions that still needs to be investigated in more detail.

    This paper investigates simulation models for salient pole solid rotor synchronous machines through experimental model identification. Two different methods are used, the classical Stand-still frequency response test method and the more recent Prediction error method. The results are compared and analyzed. It is shown that a third order model is required to describe the machine dynamics accurately. Further, the impact of extra copper pole screen is investigated, and it is concluded that these could have a beneficial effect with inverter supply.

    The higher specific torque and power density of atransverse flux permanent magnet (TFPM) machine in comparisonto a conventional machine makes it a promising direct-drivenwind turbine generator. The new topology presented in this paperis believed to have a better utilization of the available in thenacelle space. This would favor a reduced inactive weight of thegenerator and thus remove one of the major obstacles for largewind power units. The new topology is presented together withthe analytical model used in the design procedure. The analyticalmodel is used in a parametric study and the first conclusionsabout the performance of the new TFPM topology are drawn.

    This paper investigates how the losses in a Free Piston Energy Converter during start, stop and idling affects energy consumption and required power from the supply system. Simulation results indicate that the electrical machine efficiency is the most critical factor during start. Moreover, by choosing the correct amplitude of the starting force, energy consumption during start can be reduced. When it comes to idling, friction is the most significant loss factor. Nevertheless, by compensating the mechanical loss for short time intervals using the generator force, the reciprocating motion can be kept alive for a rapid start without major energy consumption.

    A compound-structure permanent-magnet synchronous machine (CS-PMSM) system used for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) has great potential to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, and has less structural complexity, weight and cost compared to the ones in the commercialized HEVs. In this paper the CS-PMSM system is simulated within ADVISOR and compared to the Toyota Hybrid System (THS), which indicates great potential to become one of the best hybrid systems. Further, a prototype machine of the CS-PMSM was designed and manufactured, and the analysis is carried out based on the results of the FEM calculations and experiments. The special problem of magnetic coupling, thermal property, and efficiency improvement are investigated, respectively, which provides a reference for the potential application.

    Permanent magnet machines for electric vehicles are often designed with a magnetic saliency to improve the torque generation as a result of the reluctance torque at field-weakening operation. The armature reaction is pronounced in such operation, leading to extensive magnetic field harmonics in the teeth and consequently iron losses. This paper analyses the iron losses in two designed machine topologies, inset and interior permanent magnet rotor structures, by measurements and finite element method computations. The measurements and calculations are performed on three prototypes-one with an in set design and two with an equal interior design, but different laminated stator core sheet thickness of 0,35 and 0,20 mm, respectively. The three machines have the same stator designs and water-cooled housings.

The rotor design is fixed and the permanent magnets are surface mounted, i.e. the rotor has negligible magnetic saliency. The studied parameters are power capability considering inverter capacity, field-weakening performance, torque ripple (including cogging), iron losses, winding losses and thermal behaviour. The results of the machine performance comparisons are based on a comprehensive use of finite element analysis tools. Measurement results from tests on a laboratory prototype are used to define heat coefficients.

    This paper introduces, simulates and analyzes a new topology of a brushless doubly-fed induction machine with rotating power electronic converter for wind power applications. Topology consists of two machines, one is the main machine which is directly connected to the grid while the second machine is the auxiliary machine which handles the slip power. The rotor of the two machines are connected via a power electronic converter which is mounted on the shaft and rotates with it. The steady state equivalent circuit of the two machine configuration is developed and analyzed. It is shown through simulations that the stator terminals of the machine can be operated at a unity power factor for variable speed range. Furthermore, it is shown that the presented system operates at a high efficiency at rated load and unity power factor.

    This paper presents the synchronous operation of a novel generator termed as the rotating power electronic brushless doubly-fed induction generator (RPE-BDFIG). It is shown that the generator operates well at the synchronous speed of the main machine, delivering the desired power to the grid. Furthermore, it is illustrated that the RPE-BDFIG behaves similar to a synchronous generator in the synchronous mode. The closed-loop control of the generator is implemented in real-time, and the current and voltage waveforms of the stator and rotor of the RPE-BDFIG are experimentally analyzed. The paper highlights the stable operation and full control of the generator during synchronous mode.

    This paper investigates through experiments a differenttopology of a brushless doubly-fed induction generatorwith a rotating power electronic converter: the rotatingpower electronic brushless doubly-fed induction generator (RPEBDFIG),operated with variable speed and torque. The theorybehind the operation of the generator is presented, its dynamicmodel and control aspects are discussed, and closed-loop controlof the generator is implemented and verified through experimentson an 11-kW prototype. The measurement results show stableoperation for variable speed and torque regions. Moreover, itis shown that the integrated rotating exciter is sufficient torecover slip power and deliver to the grid, hence, verifyingsuccessful brushless operation. Besides, it is verified that thegenerator operates well in both regions of operation, i.e., the subsynchronousand super-synchronous modes, and is stable undertorque transients added by the rotating exciter.

    This paper considers reactive power control of anew topology of a brushless doubly-fed generator—the rotatingpower electronic brushless doubly-fed induction generator (RPEBDFIG).It consists of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG),on whose rotor two power electronic converters and a rotatingexciter are mounted and rotating with its shaft. The rotatingexciter and power electronic converters supply reactive powerfrom the rotor of the DFIG, thus manipulating the powerfactor at the stator terminals. Theory for variable-reactive-poweroperation is developed and verified through experiments on an11-kW prototype.

    A new configuration for the self-excitation of the induction machine invented by Magnus Lindmark is presented. The power electronic converter using solid state switches is connected to the rotor while the stator is directly connected to the grid. Using appropriate control, the reactive power consumed by the motor can be generated in the rotor resulting in unity power factor operation. The rotor connected power electronic converter is also used for constant speed operation of the induction machine at variable torque.

    This paper presents the theoretical model and analysis of a novel topology of the self-excited induction machine using rotating power electronic converters. The power electronic converters are connected to the rotor of the induction machine and it is shown that the machine operates at unity power factor at variable load conditions including rated load. Special control strategy of the two converters helps in magnetization of the induction machine from the rotor. The experimental analysis is conducted in the industry using 11kW induction machine and close agreement is found between the theoretical model and the experimental results. Besides, the rotor resistance is varied and its effect on the power factor and performance of the machine is studied and analyzed.

This type of topology consists of a doubly-fed induction generator with power electronic converter and an integrated exciter mounted on the shaft and rotating with it. The transient simulation study is carried out in order to investigate the magnitude of the voltage dip the rotor converters can withstand before a protection scheme is needed for Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) of the generator. Furthermore, successful LVRT under severe voltage dips is also performed using passive resistive network strategy.

    A different configuration of brushless doubly-fed induction generator is presented. The power electronic converters are mounted on the rotor rotating with it. The slip rings and carbon brushes are replaced by a rotating exciter which serves as a slip recovery device as well as a means of providing excitation to the rotor of the induction generator. The dynamic model of the brushless topology is derived and analyzed. Furthermore, feedback control of the topology is also implemented and analyzed. It is shown that the generator shows stable operation in steady state as well as in dynamic state at variable speeds.

    This paper presents the implementation of the extended vector control on a new type of brushless doubly-fed generator when subjected to unsymmetrical voltage dips. This new type of generator has partially rated power electronic converter and exciter mounted on the shaft and rotating with it. The unbalanced voltages introduce positive and negative sequence components in the generator. The negative sequence components gives rise to torque oscillations and extra heating in the generator and power electronics which could affect the life time of the shaft, gearbox and electronic equipment. Two separate synchronous reference frames are defined and standard PI controllers are implemented in the reference frames in order to control the positive and negative sequence currents independently. Through these means the effect of the negative sequence currents is mitigated and it is shown that the oscillations in the behavior of this new type of generator are considerably reduced.

However, equivalent 2-D finite element analysis is performed, which is more visual from physical view and faster from computing time than 3-D finite element analysis.

    Torque ripple can be an important issue in Synchronous Reluctance Machine (SynRM) design, similar to the Induction Machine (IM). A novel, simple and systematic method for ripple reduction in SynRM (that can also be implemented for IPM and PMaSynRM) design is presented in this paper. The decoupling between stator and rotor structure during the torque ripple minimization is another goal. This can be achieved using a general method that minimizes the ripple independent of the stator structure, specially the slots number of the stator, and the number of barriers in the rotor or rotor slots number. Furthermore, it is shown that torque maximization and torque ripple minimization can be achieved independently in the SynRM design using limitedly, FEM simulations.

    This paper presents a novel method for the torque capability maximization of the synchronous reluctance machine. The macroscopic parameters d- and q-axis insulation ratios, kwq and kwd, respectively, are introduced. They describe fully the geometry characteristic of the p-pole pair, two barrier rotor. The presented combined analytical-FEM approach gives the optimal distribution of air and iron for the maximum torque. Saturation effects and other two dimensional nonlinearities are included by a limited number of FEM simulations to determine the best kwq and kwd. The method is shown to obtain the maximum torque accurately and fast for a specific stator without directly dealing with the rotor geometry dimensions.

    This paper theoretically introduces and develops a new operation diagram (OPD) and parameter estimator for the synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM). The OPD demonstrates the behavior of the machine's main performance parameters, such as torque, current, voltage, frequency, flux, power factor (PF), and current angle, all in one graph. This diagram can easily be used to describe different control strategies, possible operating conditions, both below- and above-rated speeds, etc. The saturation effect is also discussed with this diagram by finite-element-method calculations. A prototype high-performance SynRM is designed for experimental studies, and then, both machines' [corresponding induction machine (IM)] performances at similar loading and operation conditions are tested, measured, and compared to demonstrate the potential of SynRM. The laboratory measurements (on a standard 15-kW Eff1 IM and its counterpart SynRM) show that SynRM has higher efficiency, torque density, and inverter rating and lower rotor temperature and PF in comparison to IM at the same winding-temperature-rise condition. The measurements show that the torque capability of SynRM closely follows that of IM.

    This paper presents a study of eddy current rotor losses in solid pole synchronous machines, fed by a voltage source inverter. The main emphasis is on DTC (Direct Torque Control) application.     Abstract [en]

    This paper evaluates the effects of using zero voltage vectors in DTC (Direct Torque Control) applications. The evaluation considers a DTC-driven field wound synchronous motor, where the analysis is carried out using a combination of analytical and FEM (Finite Element Method) simulations. The simulations are assessed against a background of measurement results. The main emphasis of the analysis is placed on finding the losses in the motor, with a particular focus on those occurring in the solid rotor pole-plates. The paper will also utilise an innovative power difference method to estimate the time harmonic power losses in the machine.

    This paper presents a novel method in which eddy current losses in a solid rotor direct torque controlled synchronous machine are found by utilizing a combination of analytical and FEM (Finite Element Method) simulations. The method is presented along with the results obtained. The article also briefly presents a new method in which 3D (three dimensional) current flows can be modelled using a 2D (two dimensional) FEM model.

    The use of VSD (variable speed drives) is becoming prominent in industry as it has the benefit of being more energy efficient than conventional process-control mechanisms (such as throttling). VSD usually rely on the use of inverters to produce the required frequency output, which contains time harmonics that eventually induce excess losses in the machine. These losses are the subject of analysis in this study. The results show that it is possible to influence the induced current magnitude (due to the space and time harmonics) through proper design modifications, as to reduce the consequent losses. The paper focuses specifically on DTC (direct torque control) VSD application on solid pole plate synchronous machines. One of the observed effects is that the time and space harmonics are distributed differently on the pole plates.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of solid rotor and pole-plate synchronous machines has several advantages, among which is the fact that it provides a more robust rotor compared to laminated equivalents. This paper investigates the time and space harmonic losses in solid rotor synchronous machines. The work considers the use of copper coating on the pole-plates, studying the effect that this design modification has on the losses. A recommendation is given based on this study, which is considered to reduce the time harmonic losses without detrimental effects as far as the space harmonic losses are considered.
