Design, Fabrication, and Measurements of Extended L-Shaped Multiband Antenna for Wireless Applications2018Ingår i: Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society Journal, ISSN 1054-4887, Vol. 33, nr 4, s. 388-393Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article expounds a multi-band compact shaped antenna, which is based on CPW ground plane. FR-4 with a thickness of 1.6 mm is used as a substrate for the proposed antenna. The proposed antenna is capable of operating at 1.56 GHz for (Global Positioning System), 2.45 GHz (Wireless Local Area Network) and 4.49 GHz (Aeronautical Mobile Telemetry (AMT) fixed services). The efficiency at 1.56, 2.45, and 4.49 GHz is 79.7, 76.9 and 76.7%, respectively. The VSWR of the presented antenna is less than 1.5 at all the desired resonance modes, which confirms its good impedance matching. The performance of the proposed antenna is evaluated in terms of VSWR, return loss, radiation pattern and efficiency. CST (R) MWS (R) software is used for simulations. In order to validate the simulation results, a prototype of the designed antenna is fabricated and a good agreement is found between the simulated and measured results.

Flexible and Compact Spiral-Shaped Frequency Reconfigurable Antenna for Wireless Applications2020Ingår i: IETE Journal of Research, ISSN 0377-2063, E-ISSN 0974-780X, Vol. 66, nr 1, s. 22-29Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A flexible, spiral-shaped frequency reconfigurable antenna with a compact size (20 x 24 mm(2)) is presented. The proposed antenna has a low-profile planar structure and is able to operate at five different frequency bands, i.e., 4.19-4.48, 5.98-6.4, 3.42-4.0, 5.4-5.68, and 6.8-7.0 GHz. The multiband operation enables the antenna to cover aeronautical radio navigation, fixed satellite communication, WLAN, and WiMAX standards. A radiating element is backed by Rogers (R) 5880 substrate with a thickness of 0.508 mm and dielectric constant of 2.2. The spiral shape is achieved by introducing different strips. Frequency reconfiguration is achieved by the incorporation of a lumped element in a strip, so that the antenna can switch between different resonances. To validate the performance of the antenna, the prototype of the design was fabricated and tested. Good acquiescent is seen between simulated and measured results. The proposed antenna operates efficiently with appreciable return loss, directivity, bandwidth, and peak gain.

Decoupling capacitance for the power integrity of 3D-DRAM-over-logic system2012Ingår i: IEEE 13th Electronics Packaging Technology Conference (EPTC), 2011, IEEE conference proceedings, 2012, s. 590-594Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The 3D-DRAM stacked over the processor is a vibrant technique in order to overcome the memory wall as well as the bandwidth wall problems. We considered a system with two DRAM dies over a single processor die. We assumed the decoupling capacitors to be placed on each DRAM die and connected to the power distribution TSV pairs, where the TSVs pass through the DRAM stack. In this paper we proposed a mathematical model for the optimum value of the decoupling capacitance on each DRAM die along with the optimum values of the effective resistance of the interconnecting power distribution TSV pairs in order to ensure the power integrity of the logic load during switching. The proposed model has a maximum of 1.1% error as compared to the Ansoft Nexxim4.1.

Modeling of peak-to-peak core switching noise, output impedance, and decoupling capacitance along a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs2012Ingår i: Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing, ISSN 0925-1030, E-ISSN 1573-1979, Vol. 73, nr 1, s. 311-328Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we propose an efficient and accurate model to estimate peak-to-peak core switching noise, caused by simultaneous switching of logic loads along a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs in a 3D stack of dies interconnected through TSVs. The proposed model is accurate with only a 2–3% difference in peak-to-peak core switching noise as compared to the Ansoft Nexxim4.1 equivalent model. The proposed model is 3–4 times faster than Ansoft Nexxim4.1 and uses two times less memory as compared to the Ansoft Nexxim4.1 equivalent model. In this article we also thoroughly establish design guidelines for almost flat output impedance magnitude at each stage of a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs to realize a resonance free scenario over a wide operating frequency range. We also establish decoupling capacitance design guidelines based on the optimum output impedance and critically damped supply voltage for the core logic for each stage of a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs.

Modeling of peak-to-peak switching noise along a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs in a 3D stack of ICs interconnected through TSVs2010Ingår i: 28th Norchip Conference, NORCHIP 2010, 2010, artikel-id 5669473Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

On-chip power supply noise has become a bottleneck in 3D ICs as scaling of the supply network impedance has not been kept up with increasing device densities and operating currents with each technology node due to limited wire resources. In this paper we proposed an efficient and accurate model to estimate peak-to-peak switching noise, caused by simultaneous switching of logic loads along a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs in a 3D stack of ICs. The proposed model is quite accurate with only 2-3% difference from Ansoft Nexxim4.1 equivalent model. The proposed model is 3-4 times faster than Nexxim4.1 as well as consumes two times less memory as compared to Nexxim4.1equivalent model. We analyzed peak-to-peak switching noise along a vertical chain of power distribution TSV pairs by varying physical dimensions of TSVs and value of decoupling capacitance. We also thoroughly investigated the peak-to-peak noise sensitivity to TSV effective inductance and decoupling capacitance.

Fast Transient Simulation Algorithm for a 3D Power distribution Bus2010Ingår i: Proceedings of IEEE Asia Symposium on Quality Electronic Design, 2010, s. 343-350Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Extensive transient simulations for on-chip power delivery networks are required to analyze power delivery fluctuations caused by dynamic IR and Ldi/dt drops. Speed and memory has become a bottleneck for simulation of power distribution networks in modern VLSI design where clock frequency is of the order of GHz. The traditional SPICE based tools are very slow and consume a lot of memory during simulation. The problem is further aggravated for huge networks like power distribution network within a stack of ICs inter-connected through TSVs. This type of 3D power distribution network may contain billions of nodes at a time. In this paper we proposed a faster transient simulation algorithm using visual C++. First we reduce 3D power distribution bus containing n nodes to a two terminal 7 network. Then we solve this two terminal reduced network for voltages and currents. After this, we apply back solving algorithm to the network to solve it for each of the intermediate nodes using visual C++. The proposed algorithm is quite accurate with 1-2% error when compared with Ansoft Nexxim4.1. The proposed algorithm is several times faster than Ansoft Nexxim as well as consumes significantly less memory as compared to Nexxim.

Power distribution TSVs induced core switching noise2011Ingår i: Electrical Design of Advanced Packaging & Systems Symposium (EDAPS), 2010 IEEE, IEEE conference proceedings, 2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Size of on-chip interconnects as well as the supply voltage is reducing with each technology node whereas the operating speed is increasing in modern VLSI design. Today, the package inductance and resistance has been reduced to such an extent that core switching noise caused by on-chip inductance and on-chip resistance is gaining importance as compared to I/O drivers switching noise. Both on-chip inductance and skin effect are prime players at frequencies of the order of GHz. The problem is further aggravated when chips are interconnected through TSVs to form a 3D integrated stack in order to achieve low form factor and high integration density. In this paper we analysed peak core switching noise in a 3D stack of integrated chips interconnected through power distribution TSV pairs, through our comprehensive mathematical model which has been proved to be quite accurate as compared to SPICE. We analysed the effect of number of chips in a 3D stack, rise time, decoupling capacitance, and skin effect on power distribution TSVs induced core switching noise in this paper.

Peak-to-Peak Ground Noise on a Power Distribution TSV Pair as a Function of Rise Time in 3-D Stack of Dies Interconnected Through TSVs2011Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Components Packaging and Manufacturing Technology, ISSN 2156-3950, Vol. 1, nr 2, s. 196-207Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Supply grids of integrated chips are interconnected through through-silicon vias (TSVs) in modern design techniques to form a 3-D stack in vertical direction. The load on each chip is supplied through (power/ground) TSV pairs. Accurate estimation of power/ground noise on each TSV pair of a 3-D power distribution network is necessary for a robust power supply design. The worst case noise obtained with fast switching characteristics may not be significantly accurate. The behavior of power/ground noise as a function of rise time for an inductive power distribution TSV pair with decoupling capacitance, is investigated in this paper. An equivalent rise time corresponding to resonance is presented to accurately estimate the worst case power/ground noise in the time domain. In addition noise sensitivity to decoupling capacitance and TSV inductance is evaluated as a function of rise time. We also discuss noise accumulation as a result of worst case damping factor in this paper.

    A Flexible and Compact Semicircular Antenna for Multiple Wireless Communication Applications2018Ingår i: Radioengineering, ISSN 1210-2512, E-ISSN 1805-9600, Vol. 27, nr 3, s. 671-678Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This work presents a compact, quad-band planar antenna intended for assimilation into flexible and conformal devices. The CPW-fed semicircular shaped prototype with rake-shaped slots is designed, realized and characterized experimentally. The frequency bands covered by the proposed radiator are centered at 2.5, 3.7, 5.5 and 8 GHz with measured impedance bandwidths of 16%, 13.5%, 11.8% and 14.63%, respectively. The proposed antenna is thus enabled to support WLAN, ISM, Bluetooth, WiMAX LTE and X-band applications. The antenna exhibits a significant gain. The radiation characteristics of the proposed radiator are measured in concave and convex bent shapes at various radii to analyze its flexibility. Performance of the antenna remains almost unaffected in the bent situation. Measurements demonstrate good coherence with simulations. The compactness and good performance of the design both in bent and unbent conditions proves it to be the better contender for future multiband conformal wireless applications.

RFID Humidity Sensor Tag for Low-cost Applications2017Ingår i: APPLIED COMPUTATIONAL ELECTROMAGNETICS SOCIETY JOURNAL, ISSN 1054-4887, Vol. 32, nr 12, s. 1083-1088Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a low-cost, flexible, chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for humidity monitoring applications. The tag exhibits moisture sensing feature within a compact geometrical dimension of 20mm x 17.6mm. The design is loaded with 12 resonators, where each resonator represents 1 bit in the frequency domain. For the designed 12-bit tag, 11 inverted C-shaped resonators are dedicated for encoding 11-bit information in their spectral signature. An integrated meandered-shaped resonator, covered with moisture sensitive Kapton (R) HN film, functions as a 1-bit moisture sensor. It is deployed for monitoring relative humidity (RH) levels, simultaneously. The passive RFID tag is realized on Taconic TLX-0 and has an operational bandwidth of 2.62 GHz. Furthermore, the design is modeled and analyzed for multiple substrates. The performance of the sensor tag for various humidity levels indicates that it is a potential solution for inexpensive sensing applications.

Autonomous Patient/Home Health Monitoring powered by Energy Harvesting2017Ingår i: Globecom 2017 - 2017 IEEE Global Communications Conference, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the design of an autonomous smart patient/home health monitoring system. Both patient physiological parameters as well as room conditions are being monitored continuously to insure patient safety. The sensors are connected on an IoT regime, where the collected data is wirelessly transferred to a nearby gateway which performs preliminary data analysis, commonly referred to as fog computing, to make sure emergency personnel and healthcare providers are notified in case patient being monitored is at risk. To achieve power autonomy three energy harvesting sources are proposed, namely, solar, RF and thermal. The design of the RF energy harvesting system is demonstrated, where novel multiband antenna is fabricated as well as an efficient RF-DC rectifier achieving maximum conversion efficiency of 84%. Finally, the sensor node is tested with different type of sensors and settings while being solely powered by a Photovoltaic (PV) solar cell.

Design and Analysis of Efficient and Compact Antenna for Paper Based UHF RFID Tags2008Ingår i: ISAPE 2008: THE 8TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ANTENNAS, PROPAGATION AND EM THEORY, PROCEEDINGS, VOLS 1-3 / [ed] Su D; Yan Z, NEW YORK: IEEE , 2008, s. 62-65Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Paper substrate is one of the paramount nominees for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags but at the same time it is extremely prone towards environmental changes. In this paper, antennas for UHF RFID tags on paper based substrate are investigated and analyzed for the first time to evaluate the effect of change in dielectric constant on the antenna parameters and performance. On the basis of analysis a concrete meander line antenna is proposed, designed and evaluated which has tremendous immunity towards variation in dielectric constant.

Design and Characterization of Efficient Flexible UHF RFID Tag Antennas2009Ingår i: 2009 3RD EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, NEW YORK: IEEE , 2009, s. 2682-2684Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper meander line antennas with end tip loading, designed for UHF RFID tags are presented. These novel antennas are screen printed on Kapton HN for European frequency band (866-868 MHz) and for North American frequency band (902-928 MHz). Asahi ink is used for screen printing of 25 mu m thick antenna traces which remains conductive even after several times sharp bending of these tag antennas. The results show that the antennas exhibit high performance regarding smaller area, high realized gain and better return loss in the frequency band of interest. These antennas are extremely flexible which give autonomy for their applications.

Directly Printable Frequency Signatured Chipless RFID Tag for IoT Applications2017Ingår i: Radioengineering, ISSN 1210-2512, E-ISSN 1805-9600, Vol. 26, nr 1, s. 139-146Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes a low-cost, compact, flexible passive chipless RFID tag that has been designed and analyzed. The tag is a bowtie-shaped resonator based structure with 36 slots; where each patch is loaded with 18 slots. The tag is set in a way that each slot in a patch corresponds to a metal gap in the other patch. Hence there is no mutual interference, and high data capacity of 36 bits is achieved in such compact size. Each slot corresponds to a resonance frequency in the RCS curve, and each resonance corresponds to a bit. The tag has been realized for Taconic TLX-0, PET, and Kapton (R) HN (DuPont (TM)) substrates with copper, aluminum, and silver nanoparticlebased ink (Cabot CCI-300) as conducting materials. The tag exhibits flexibility and well optimized while remaining in a compact size. The proposed tag yields 36 bits in a tag dimension of 24.5. 25.5 mm(2). These 36 bits can tag 2(36) number of objects/items. The ultimate high capacity, compact size, flexible passive chipless RFID tag can be arrayed in various industrial and IoT-based applications.

Exploring Spiking Neural Network on Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architectures2014Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series, 2014, s. 64-67Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Today, reconfigurable architectures are becoming increas- ingly popular as the candidate platforms for neural net- works. Existing works, that map neural networks on re- configurable architectures, only address either FPGAs or Networks-on-chip, without any reference to the Coarse-Grain Reconfigurable Architectures (CGRAs). In this paper we investigate the overheads imposed by implementing spiking neural networks on a Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Ar- chitecture (CGRAs). Experimental results (using point to point connectivity) reveal that up to 1000 neurons can be connected, with an average response time of 4.4 msec.

Internet of things enabled in-home health monitoring system using early warning score2015Ingår i: MOBIHEALTH 2015 - 5th EAI International Conference on Wireless Mobile Communication and Healthcare - Transforming Healthcare through Innovations in Mobile and Wireless Technologies, ICST , 2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Early warning score (EWS) is an approach to detect the deterioration of a patient. It is based on a fact that there are several changes in the physiological parameters prior a clinical deterioration of a patient. Currently, EWS procedure is mostly used for in-hospital clinical cases and is performed in a manual paper-based fashion. In this paper, we propose an automated EWS health monitoring system to intelligently monitor vital signs and prevent health deterioration for in-home patients using Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies. IoT enables our solution to provide a real-Time 24/7 service for health professionals to remotely monitor inhome patients via Internet and receive notifications in case of emergency. We also demonstrate a proof-of-concept EWS system where continuous reading, transferring, recording, and processing of vital signs have been implemented.

Context-aware early warning system for in-home healthcare using internet-of-things2016Ingår i: 2nd International Summit on Internet of Things, IoT 360° 2015, Springer, 2016, s. 517-522Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Early warning score (EWS) is a prediction method to notify caregivers at a hospital about the deterioration of a patient. Deterioration can be identified by detecting abnormalities in patient’s vital signs several hours prior the condition of the patient gets life-threatening. In the existing EWS systems, monitoring of patient’s vital signs and the determining the score is mostly performed in a paper and pen based way. Furthermore, currently it is done solely in a hospital environment. In this paper, we propose to import this system to patients’ home to provide an automated platform which not only monitors patents’ vital signs but also looks over his/her activities and the surrounding environment. Thanks to the Internet-of-Things technology, we present an intelligent early warning method to remotely monitor in-home patients and generate alerts in case of different medical emergencies or radical changes in condition of the patient. We also demonstrate an early warning score analysis system which continuously performs sensing, transferring, and recording vital signs, activity-related data, and environmental parameters.

    Abstract [en]

An electronically beam-steerable antenna (BSA) is envisioned. The presented BSA is a possible solution to overthrow the limitations inherent to phased antenna arrays. The design consists of a gap coupling inset feed rectangular patch (driven element) and 3 x 1 passive parasitic patches deployed on both sides of the driven patch. Prototype having 20 x 20 mm dimensions is printed on Rogers(R) RT/duroid(R)5870. Four switches are used to load the reactive impedance on parasitic patches, which in turn, change the phases of surface current on parasitic elements and the driven element. Based on the different ON and OFF configuration of switches in parasitic array elements, the main beam is steered along with different directions. The simulated results show that the design can operate between 26.8 and 30.3 GHz a wide impedance bandwidth |S-11|< -10 dB (12.5%) with a peak gain of 8.9 dBi and wide 3-dB scanning angle that is, -37 degrees to 156 degrees in the azimuth plane. The exhibited performance of BSA with favourable characteristics, such as wideband, adequate gain, wide-angle beam switching, and low profile renders the BSA a good candidate for 5G millimetre wave handheld devices. Moreover, to corroborate the performance, the design is fabricated, and experimental measurements were performed. Congruence is observed between the experimentally measured and computationally simulated results. The simulated results of spherical coverage analysis of BSA with the integration of smartphone form factor are also presented.

Miniaturized decoupled slotted patch RFID tag antennas for wearable health care2017Ingår i: International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering, ISSN 1096-4290, E-ISSN 1099-047X, Vol. 27, nr 1, artikel-id e21048Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, a couple of two-layered RFID tag antenna designs exhibiting improved performance descriptors for on-body applications are presented. The antennas are designed to operate in the microwave band (2.4–2.48 GHz) ensuring high data transmission rates ideal for real-time subject monitoring applications. The radiating element of both the antennas is a slotted patch structure provisioned with a pair of T-shaped slots realized on a commercial FR4 substrate. The augmentation of a systematic sequence of narrow comb-like etchings into the design enhances the impedance bandwidth considerably. A high permittivity silicon layer embedded with the radiating patch provides resilience from the human body dielectric losses. A modified antenna design utilizing patch miniaturization technique, resulting in an overall footprint reduction by 32%, is also proposed. The designed tag antennas offer a gain of more than 1.8 dBi and an attractive read range greater than 6.8 m in the operating band.

A high capacity tunable retransmission type frequency coded chipless radio frequency identification system2019Ingår i: International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering, ISSN 1096-4290, E-ISSN 1099-047X, Vol. 29, nr 9, artikel-id e21855Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a 12-bit frequency coded chipless RFID system in the frequency range of 3 to 6 GHz. The system consists of a fully printable chipless tag and a pair of high-gain reader antennas. The tag also incorporates its own antennas to improve the read range. Information is encoded into frequency spectrum using a multi-resonant circuit. The circuit consists of multiple microstrip U and L-shaped open stub resonators patterned in a unique configuration. The proposed configuration aids in capturing more data in a reduced space as well as tunable frequency operation. Tag and reader antennas utilize techniques such as stepped impedance feeding line, defective partial ground plane, and stair-step patch structure to achieve wide-band impedance bandwidth in miniature size. The results of the wireless measurements in the non-anechoic environment show that the proposed system has a reading range of more than 20 cm. The presented system possesses great potential for low-cost short-range inventory tracking.

Low-profile magnetically coupled dual resonance patch antenna for UHF RFID applications2021Ingår i: AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications, ISSN 1434-8411, E-ISSN 1618-0399, Vol. 133, artikel-id 153672Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A novel low-profile metal mountable UHF RFID tag antenna is presented. The tag antenna design consists of two resonating patches with different resonant frequencies fed through a joint inductive loop. This design topology offers benefits such as bandwidth enhancement in the single band and the possibility of attaining a tunable dualband coverage in the UHF RFID band. The proposed antenna structure doesn't require any electrical connection (shorting pins/shorting plates/via holes) and therefore facilitates fabrication through a conventional RFID inlay manufacturing process. Fabrication and testing of a prototype of the proposed antenna design are carried out. The prototype antenna achieves free space and an on-metal reading range of better than 8 m and 11 m respectively in the US RFID band of 902-928 MHz.

    Abstract [en]

RFID tag antennas with stable performance on the diverse electromagnetic mounting platforms are an integral part of the ubiquitous RFID systems. This research article presents a novel tag antenna design that facilitates the said objective. The proposed antenna consists of a modified H-shaped slot structure that ensures considerable robustness from the application environment through confining the surface current density within the antenna structure. The antenna offers a tunable bandwidth of 40 MHz within the microwave band of (2.4-2.5) GHz. The proposed tag antenna exhibits excellent response on metallic platforms of different sizes and thicknesses with an effective gain of almost four times of that in free space. Furthermore, the designed tag antenna performs adequately well on low-medium permittivity dielectrics (glass, paper, and plastic) and RF absorbers (water). The free space and on-metal performance of the proposed tag antenna are verified by testing a prototype realized on the FR4 substrate.

A compact implantable RFID tag antenna dedicated to wireless health care2017Ingår i: International Journal of RF and Microwave Computer-Aided Engineering, ISSN 1096-4290, E-ISSN 1099-047X, Vol. 27, nr 5, artikel-id e21094Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Implantable tag antennas are an integral component of contemporary pervasive patient monitoring setups envisioned to reduce the medical errors and improve the quality of health care facilities. These tags, embedded into the human body, transmit critical patient information to the external equipment via a wireless communication link. This research article presents an implantable compact folded dipole antenna of size 10 mm 3 15 mm 3 2 mm, designed to operate in the industrial-scientificmedical band (2.4-2.48GHz). A three-layered phantom representing the human arm is used to evaluate the subcutaneous antenna performance. The tag antenna embedded in the middle of the fat layer offers a maximum gain of 216.3 dBi. The tag antenna performance as a function of implant position and phantom dimensions is analyzed. Link budget calculations show that with the achieved antenna gain the link power exceeds the required power by 38.37 dBm, and hence wireless communication is viable.

    Self-aware early warning score system for IoT-based personalized healthcare2017Ingår i: International Summit on eHealth 360°, 2016, Springer, 2017, s. 49-55Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Early Warning Score (EWS) system is specified to detect and predict patient deterioration in hospitals. This is achievable via monitoring patient's vital signs continuously and is often manually done with paper and pen. However, because of the constraints in healthcare resources and the high hospital costs, the patient might not be hospitalized for the whole period of the treatments, which has lead to a demand for in-home or portable EWS systems. Such a personalized EWS system needs to monitor the patient at anytime and anywhere even when the patient is carrying out daily activities. In this paper, we propose a self-aware EWS system which is the reinforced version of the existing EWS systems by using the Internet of Things technologies and the self-awareness concept. Our self-aware approach provides (i) system adaptivity with respect to various situations and (ii) system personalization by paying attention to critical parameters. We evaluate the proposed EWS system using a full system demonstration.

Internet of things for remote elderly monitoring: a study from user-centered perspective2017Ingår i: Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing, ISSN 1868-5137, E-ISSN 1868-5145, Vol. 8, nr 2, s. 273-289Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Improvements in life expectancy achieved by technological advancements in the recent decades have increased the proportion of elderly people. Frailty of old age, susceptibility to diseases, and impairments are inevitable issues that these senior adults need to deal with in daily life. Recently, there has been an increasing demand on developing elderly care services utilizing novel technologies, with the aim of providing independent living. Internet of things (IoT), as an advanced paradigm to connect physical and virtual things for enhanced services, has been introduced that can provide significant improvements in remote elderly monitoring. Several efforts have been recently devoted to address elderly care requirements utilizing IoT-based systems. Nevertheless, there still exists a lack of user-centered study from an all-inclusive perspective for investigating the daily needs of senior adults. In this paper, we study the IoT-enabled systems tackling elderly monitoring to categorize the existing approaches from a new perspective and to introduce a hierarchical model for elderly-centered monitoring. We investigate the existing approaches by considering the elderly requirements at the center of the attention. In addition, we evaluate the main objectives and trends in IoT-based elderly monitoring systems in order to pave the way for future systems to improve the quality of elderly's life.
