Distributed Two-stage Network Topology Processor for HVDC Grid Operation2017Inngår i: 2017 IEEE POWER & ENERGY SOCIETY GENERAL MEETING, IEEE , 2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the results of an analysis of distributed two-stage coordination of network topology processor for HVDC grids. In the first stage of the two-stage processor, the substation topology is analyzed locally using an automated graph based algorithm. Thereafter, a distributed algorithm is proposed to used the neighboring information to realize the grid connectivity. For distributed islanding detection, the connectivity problem is formulated as a set of linear equations and solved iteratively using successive-over-relaxation method. The performance of the proposed methods versus conventional one-stage method has been tested in an islandinv, scenario for a 5-terminal HVDC grid.

A Framework for Wide-Area Monitoring and Control Systems Interoperability and Cybersecurity Analysis2014Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, ISSN 0885-8977, E-ISSN 1937-4208, Vol. 29, nr 2, s. 633-641Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Wide-area monitoring and control (WAMC) systems are the next-generation operational-management systems for electric power systems. The main purpose of such systems is to provide high resolution real-time situational awareness in order to improve the operation of the power system by detecting and responding to fast evolving phenomenon in power systems. From an information and communication technology (ICT) perspective, the nonfunctional qualities of these systems are increasingly becoming important and there is a need to evaluate and analyze the factors that impact these nonfunctional qualities. Enterprise architecture methods, which capture properties of ICT systems in architecture models and use these models as a basis for analysis and decision making, are a promising approach to meet these challenges. This paper presents a quantitative architecture analysis method for the study of WAMC ICT architectures focusing primarily on the inter-operability and cybersecurity aspects.

Application of the IEC 61850-7-420 data model on a hybrid renewable energy system2011Inngår i: 2011 IEEE PES Trondheim PowerTech: The Power of Technology for a Sustainable Society, POWERTECH 2011, Trondheim, 2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

IEC 61850 is the most promising standard for design of substation communication and automation systems. Recent revisions of the standard include support for modeling, and control of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). This paper presents an application of the IEC 61850-7-420 data model for DER in the implementation of a control and energy management system for a Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES). These systems are beginning to prove their usefulness in providing deployable electrical supply in locations where no such supply exists as well as for backup power or power quality related support functions. The motivation for applying the standard to the design process is twofold; to modularize the design according to an accepted international standard and to design for interoperability with other IEC 61850 enabled devices and SCADA systems.

Quantifying Uncertainties of Security and QoS for Design of Power Grid Communications Systems2016Inngår i: 2016 49th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), IEEE Computer Society, 2016, s. 2566-2575Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Reliable and secure communication, and high quality of service (QoS) (low latency, high availability, etc.) of data are critical to the successful operation of power systems. However, uncertainties, both aleatory and epistemic, are inherent to the system, which makes it difficult to secure the communication while fulfilling the QoS requirements. Nowadays, the administrators of the power grid's communication system have much flexibility in choosing a specific security scheme but the uncertainties make answering the question "what is the best scheme" or even "what is an adequate scheme" very difficult. Appropriately quantifying uncertainty and its effects on security is a key to choosing a sufficiently secure communication system for power grid while meeting QoS requirements. In this paper, we model aleatory and epistemic uncertainties using probability distributions and subjective logic respectively. Comprehensive quantification of the uncertainties can greatly sharpen administrators' understanding of the trade-offs between security and QoS and help them to select the most fitting security scheme to meet the QoS requirements. A case study demonstrates how our method works for two different application scenarios.

Quality Assurance of Time Critical Data Using Adaptive Data Delivery Mechanisms in Smart Grids2018Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Smart grids are proposed to integrate renewable energy and to improve the efficiency of power system operation. The challenges of integrating renewable energy are the inherent fluctuations of generation which are difficult to predict which may lead to challenges to the safe operation of power systems. Improving the efficiency of power systems means they should be operated closer to their limits. To solve these challenges, advanced protection and control applications, have been proposed that increase the accuracy of reactions and reduce the response time to events and faults. However, not all the data required for these applications can be delivered by the conventional Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. As an example, synchrophasor data are intended to be delivered via a Wide Area Monitoring and Control (WAMC) system, which can be seen as a parallel data delivery infrastructure to SCADA. As deployment of intelligent substation secondary devices such as Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), Merging Units (MUs), and Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), data volume and data resolution in the power systems is increasing. To flexibly share data in the power system, different data delivery architectures have been proposed. Flexible data sharing brings benefits of information resiliency from different data sources. But it also raises the requirements on cyber-security for protection of the smart grid applications. Such needs are in turn being gradually addressed by new cyber-security mechanisms.

In this thesis, the main quality attributes for time critical smart grid applications being; data accuracy, information resiliency, communication performance, and cyber-security and their interrelation are studied. Most previous research has been focused on assurance on one of these quality attributes, while in practical implementation the attributes are clearly related and interdependent. There is consequently a lack of study of the interactions between these quality attributes.

This thesis focuses on the interactions of three pairs of these four time critical data quality attributes. The hypothesis of the interaction of each pair has been formulated as research question which is answered in different sections of the thesis. The results of this thesis show that information resiliency can increase the data accuracy and enhance the communication performance assurance to the smart grid application. This is in the thesis shown by two of the contributions presented in this thesis, being the implementation and validation of an adaptive data source selection mechanism to realize at substation level and wide area system level separately. In addition, since cyber-security mechanisms can affect the communication performance, specifically latency, and a trade off between security and performance may be needed. A third contribution in the thesis is a framework incorporating these two time critical quality attributes consisting of  an adaptive cyber-security scheme which contributes to the incorporation of performance requirements.

Stateful Data Delivery Service for Wide Area Monitoring and Control Applications2014Inngår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks, 2014, s. 768-773Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Recent Information and Communication Technology (ICT) advances have enabled power system applications using measurement signals across the Wide Area Network (WAN). The application control performance relies on the quality of data delivery service. However, the characteristics of Quality of Service (QoS), such as latency, packet loss, and packet jitter, are unavoidable. It is a trend to take QoS metric requirement into the consideration of controller design. But, how to ensure the application receiving the data within the designed tolerant range is another challenge. This paper presents ongoing work on a novel Stateful Data Delivery Service (SDDS) for power system application to address the challenge from the side of the communication infrastructure. The SDDS monitors the QoS performance on-line and identifies the signals which satisfy the requirement for the application to use. As a proof of concept, a Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller is connected to the SDDS. The result shows the improvement in robustness of the POD controller by application of the SDDS. The paper also shows the feasibility of applying SDDS to WAC applications.

Software Merging Unit based IED Functional Test Platform2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In Substation Automation Systems, application functions such as monitoring, control, and protection are deployed in intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Before the IEDs are installed in the substation, functions are tested by the manufactures to ensure that the functions operate properly as designed. A conventional function test platform is made of amplifiers with copper wire connection to the IEDs. It has drawbacks such as high cost, limited flexibility, and limited number of signal channels. With the introduction of the IEC61850 standard, IEDs are able to obtain measurement from merging units (MU) via the process bus. Consequently, using MUs to replace the amplifier for IED function testing has been studied by several research groups. All of them use hardware MUs or power system simulator embedded MUs. These MUs based test platforms have weakness such as limitation of the number of MUs and lower flexibility in MU performance modification, This paper proposes a novel IED functional test platform using software MU (sMU), which mitigates the above limitations. Thanks to the software approach, different MU performance scenarios can be easily configured instead of using a complicated communications simulator. The sMU based test platform concept has been proved by performing accuracy and operate-time tests with transformer differential protection. Comparing with conventional test platform, sMU based test platform has better results in the accuracy tests and similar performance in the operate-time tests. Therefore, it is feasible to use sMU based platform for IED functional tests.

Adaptive data link configuration for WAMC applications using a Stateful Data Delivery Service platform2016Inngår i: Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks, ISSN 0284-4354, E-ISSN 2352-4677, Vol. 6, s. 166-175Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Wide Area Monitoring and Control (WAMC) applications provide, among other things, stability control to power systems by using global measurements. However, these measurements suffer unavoidable Quality of Service (QoS) problems, such as delay, during the transmission through a wide area communication network. Such delays potentially lead to failure of the control application. To overcome these effects, mechanisms that provide robustness to QoS problems for control applications and configuration of communication networks to optimize QoS performance have been proposed by several researchers. To optimize utilization of the communication infrastructure and to adapt to variations in QoS, applications can benefit from an interface to request and obtain QoS information from a managed communication infrastructure. To meet this need, a novel Stateful Data Delivery Service (SDDS) for WAMC applications is proposed in this paper. The SDDS monitors the QoS performance online and provides feedback to one or more WAMC applications. To increase reliability of the applications, the SDDS also provides adaptive data link configuration services. By using online QoS measurements and multiple data sources, the SDDS platform can provide a WAMC application with data fulfilling its requirements. To prove the concept, a case study has been performed and the results of this study show that the application using the SDDS can keep a benchmark power system stable even when original data link QoS performance does not meet the application's requirements. The paper also contains a presentation of the SDDS prototype platform under development as a part of the ongoing research.

Effects of Bursty Event Traffic on Synchrophasor Delays in IEEE C37.118, IEC61850, and IEC608702015Inngår i: 2015 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SMART GRID COMMUNICATIONS (SMARTGRIDCOMM), IEEE , 2015, s. 478-484Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Electric grids are increasingly relying on communication as grids get more stressed due to increasing penetration of renewables, inadequate transmission growth, and other factors. The IEEE detailed power system models have been widely used in power research. But lack of communication topologies or requirements leads to difficulties for results comparison or guidelines for utilities. Further, power grid communication often meet latency requirement by application during the steady state since in such state light traffic are generated. However, identical requirements can be stringent in the bulk power system over hundreds of miles especially when bursty aperiodic event messages are generated during a power disturbance. To address these shortcomings, this paper presents a detailed model of realistic communication for IEEE-14 bus system. Simulation measurement shows significant effects of bursty traffic from GOOSE disturbance event message over Wide Area Network on the delays suffered by other periodic traffic such as synchrophasor data, SCADA polling data, and Sampled Value exchanged between substations. The results also reveals significant scalability issues of centralized control center architecture.

Perspectives on Peer-to-Peer Data Delivery Architectures for Next Generation Power Systems2013Inngår i: Smart Grid Management, 2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and aggregation of equipment bring in new perspectives in terms of the increasing number of data users. It also brings new data delivery requirements which are difficult to be met by the legacy systems. Off-the-shelf standards and communication technologies are the enablers to push current data delivery solutions to a new level. At this level this new data delivery system can fulfill Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of next generation power system. This paper proposes a comprehensive architecture of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based overlay-control data delivery system covering all levels of data delivery. The core technology of such an architecture lays on the Intelligent Substation Gateway (ISG), which is employed to provide data delivery service to meet the QoS requirements. Proposed data delivery system brings advantages as autonomy, flexibility, scalability, and efficient to the power system.

IEC61850 Interface based Multi-agent Distribution Networks Operation and Control Architecture2013Inngår i: Smart Grid Infrastructure, 2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Modern Active Distribution Networks (ADN) are of distributed nature in their operation and control. Multi-agent systems (MAS) have several inherent characteristics which motivate a significant interest in their application in control and automation of ADN. Interoperability is an important consideration for both communication between agents as well as for agent to power system equipment. This paper proposes an IEC61850 interface based multiagent system architecture for distribution network operation and control. A case study is also performed to prove the proposed concept.

IEC61850 Logical Node Lookup Service Using Distributed Hash Tables2014Inngår i: 2014 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference, ISGT 2014, IEEE Computer Society, 2014, s. 6816443-Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) increases the communication capability of equipment in power system and also creates large number of data sources. In order to reliably share these data sources with applications is a new challenge for power system. This paper presents an alternate data delivery system solution using IEC61850 standard Manufactory Messaging Specification (MMS) across wide area networks, utilizing Distributed Hash Table (DHT) for look-up of Logical Nodes addresses.  Result of the proposed scheme is a flexible, autonomous, scalable, and robust method to address Logical Nodes across a Wide Area Network. In comparison with IEC61850-90-2 solution, this solution can help reduce the manual work in configuration of each link, and enables greater flexibility for adding new data points. The presented platform also opens door of providing adaptive data acquisition for power system applications by implementing a filtering function in the ISG.

This position paper presents initial research and investigation on a unified framework combining two independent systems, the legacy SCADA system and the synchronized phasor data system, that share the same measurement sources, i.e., current and voltage transducers and the same communication medium. In this framework, conventional SCADA system coupled with substation automation system are modeled together with synchronized phasor systems. The contribution of this paper also includes a state-of–the-art survey of topics related to the proposed architectures. Furthermore, an overview of the data flows between substation and control centers including both SCADA and phasor measurements are presented. Taking into consideration the growing interest in communication and automation standardization this paper also addresses the communication between the substations coupled with relevant standards and technology.

Modeling of Communication Infrastructure Compatible to Nordic 32 Power System2016Inngår i: IEEE-Power-and-Energy-Society General Meeting 2016, IEEE, 2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Smart Grid integrates communication and computationtechnologies into power systems. Research on interdisciplinarytopics between power system and communicationsystems requires models for both systems. There are severalpower system models available representing standard powersystems and real power systems. However, lacking of theircorresponding communication infrastructure information leadsthe difficulty of communication system modeling. In this paper,a communication infrastructure model compatible to Nordic 32power system model has been developed and presented. In thismodel, Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) is incorporatedwith Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition system. Theparameters of this model are based on the data from a Nordicelectric power utility. Validation of the model is performedthrough comparison of results from simulation and a previousempirical data study performed on the same utility network. Inadditional, this model is simulated by using different Qualityof Service (QoS) mechanism. The obtained results show thatcongestion management mechanisms introduce additional delayto the highest priority traffic slightly. But traffics with lowerpriority can be benefit from congestion management mechanisms. The proposed model can be widely used for other research onNordic 32 power system.

Bad Data Detection Using Linear WLS and Sampled Values in Digital Substations2018Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, ISSN 0885-8977, E-ISSN 1937-4208, Vol. 33, nr 1, s. 150-157, artikkel-id 7867789Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Smart Grids employ intelligent control applications that require high quality data: fast, secure, and error free. Several researchers have focused on providing techniques for low latency and secured data links for these applications. Bad data detection is however generally provided only at the central level due to limitations in legacy technologies employed in many substations. With the introduction of IEC61850 data sharing within the substation becomes more flexible and transparent allowing more sophisticated management of data quality. Hence, this paper proposes a substation level bad data detection algorithm to facilitate also these types of requirements from applications. The algorithm is based on automatically detecting the substation topology by parsing standard substation description files and online state of circuit breakers and disconnectors. By applying linear weighted least square based state estimation algorithm, bad data from failing current transformers (CT) can be detected. By conducting the verification of different types of bad data, the results show the output of bad data detection algorithm provides higher accuracy than output from both measurement and protective CT in both static and faulty situations.
