Optimal pulses for arbitrary dispersive media2011Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 6, s. 11035-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A variational procedure is given for finding the pulses for which the initial temporal rms width and the rate of increase of this width are jointly minimized for propagation in non-absorbing media with arbitrary dispersive properties. We show that, while in linearly dispersive media the optimal pulses are Gaussian, in other situations such as a hollow metallic waveguide or for purely cubic dispersion departures from Gaussian behavior become evident. An interpretation of the results in terms of suitable phase-space representations is also given.

    Plasmonic Marangoni forces2006Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 1, s. 06030-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Localized surface-tension-driven forces (microscale Marangoni effect) caused by a temperature inhomogeneity from the decay of optically excited surface plasmons into phonons have been engaged in the actuation of adsorbed and applied liquid on a thin metal film. Microfluidic operations of transport, separation, mixing, and sorting have been experimentally and theoretically demonstrated using this all-optical modulation scheme.

Excitation back transfer in a statistical model for upconversion in Er-doped fibres2007Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 2, s. 07027-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We report a new analytical method to evaluate the accuracy of a statistical model of the migration assisted upconversion in Er-doped fibres. Unlike the mean-field approach to the excitation back transfer which was used in a previous statistical model, we use a new approximation accounting for the variance of population of the first excited level. Such an approach presents more realistic physical description of the excitation - emission processes in heavily-doped Er-based fibres. Implementing these results, we find that the accuracy of upconversion rate calculations is within 13% if the concentration of erbium ions is smaller than the critical one.

Near-infrared light absorption and scattering based on a mono-layer of gold nanoparticles2015Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 10, artikel-id 15031Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We report fabrication and characterization of large-area ultrathin near-infrared light absorbers and scatterers based on a mono-layer of gold nanoparticles laying on top of a dielectric spacer and an aluminum reflector. The nanoparticles are formed through thermal annealing of an evaporated continuous gold film. Through optimization of initial gold-film thickness, spacer thickness, as well as annealing temperature we obtained samples that exhibit very low (similar to 2%) broadband specular reflectance at near-infrared (NIR) wavelength range. By considering also diffuse reflection, we identify that the low specular reflectance can be due to either relatively high light absorption (similar to 70%) or high light scattering (over 60%), with the latter achieved for samples having relatively sparse gold nanoparticles. Both strong absorption and scattering of NIR light are not inherent properties of the bulk materials used for fabricating the samples. Such composite optical surfaces can potentially be integrated to solar-energy harvesting and LED devices.

Effects of partial coherence on frequency combs2007Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 2, s. 07007-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We give an analytical model to study the deviations from an ideal frequency comb when the effects of random variations, from pulse to pulse, in the amplitude, phase, shape, chirp, and timing jitter are simultaneously taken into account. This model is consistent with the previous experimental research and extends the theoretical work on spectral line widths of mode-locked lasers.

Enhanced transmission through arrays of subwavelength holes in gold films coated by a finite dielectric layer2007Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 2, s. 07009-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Enhanced transmissions through a gold film with arrays of subwavelength holes are theoretically studied, employing the rigid full vectorial three dimensional finite difference time domain method. Influence of air-holes shape to the transmission is firstly studied, which confirms two different resonances attributing to the enhanced transmission: the localized waveguide resonance and periodic surface plasmon resonances. For the film coated with dielectric layers, calculated results show that in the wavelength region of interest the localized waveguide resonant mode attributes to sensing rather than the periodic gold-glass surface plasmon mode. Although the detected peak is fairly broad and the shift is not too pronounced, we emphasize the contribution for sensing from the localized waveguide resonant mode, which may opens up new ways to design surface plasmon based sensors.

Radiative properties of carriers in CdSe-CdS core-shell heterostructured nanocrystals of various geometries2013Ingår i: Journal of the European Optical Society - Rapid Publications, ISSN 1990-2573, E-ISSN 1990-2573, Vol. 8, s. 13042-Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We report a model on core-shell heterostructured nanocrystals with CdSe as the core and CdS as the shell. The model is based on one-band Schrodinger equation. Three different geometries, nanodot, nanorod, and nanobone, are implemented. The carrier localization regimes with these structures are simulated, compared, and analyzed. Based on the electron and hole wave functions, the carrier overlap integral that has a great impact on stimulated emission is further investigated numerically by a novel approach. Furthermore, the relation between the nanocrystal size and electron-hole recombination energy is also examined.
