Be lean to be resilient: Setting capabilities for turbulent times2015Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Businesses globally are challenged to innovate their operations strategies and practices towards tighter delivery times, better quality and cheaper prices to remain profitable in addition to managing unpredictable circumstances well in today’s turbulent business environment. They often have to deal with the apparent paradox of advancing efficiency-fostering approaches such as lean production, and enhancing operational resilience against unanticipated disruptions. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether and how practices in seemingly contradicting paradigms in operations management can be utilised to attain a better competitive position in the face of uncertainties.

This thesis is comprised of ‘modules’ of studies designed to systematically address the three research questions. This was necessary due to the different maturity level of the concepts brought together. Predominantly qualitative mixed-method approach was used for the overall research with some quantitative analysis included. The critical incident technique, case study and Bayesian inference were used in the different studies (papers).

Operational resilience is characterised in terms of five core functions: sense, build, reconfigure, re-enhance, and sustain (RQ1). Resilience is also operationalised using routine practices that are bundled into internal/external, proactive/reactive dimensions of capabilities that positively influence performance upon recovery from disruption. An analysis showing that lean practice bundles lead to better operational performance under high uncertainty context is also done in this thesis (RQ2). Finally, operational resilience (based on routine practices that form the core functions) was found to have stronger synergies than trade-off with lean (based on practice bundles) in times of turbulence (RQ3).

This thesis extends the resource-based view to high uncertainty contexts through empirical evidence and shows that resilience (dynamic) capabilities can be built from practices that firms normally employ; the capabilities are sources of better performance and competitive advantages in turbulent business environments. The thesis contributes to the discussion on the paradox of lean and operational resilience based approaches in the same context; lean practices bundles lend themselves to synergy with resilience capabilities, and leverage competitive gains in turbulent times.

Practically, findings of this thesis suggest that companies need not abandon their lean implementation to become more resilient. In fact, it shows that lean implementation should be extended to address value chain processes beyond the shop floor for integrative removal of wastes, while being able to flexibly mitigate disruptions.

Operational resilience and lean: In search of synergies and tradeoffs2016Inngår i: International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management (IJMTM), ISSN 1368-2148, E-ISSN 1741-5195, Vol. 27, nr 2, s. 185-207Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate synergy/trade-off relationship between lean and operational resilience paradigms upon disruption. Lean and resilience are operationalised with practice bundles and core functions, respectively. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses the Bayesian inference approach to analyse systematically encoded data from firms that faced disruptions in their supply chain. The data were collected from publicly available sources, and encoded using predefined constructs prior to analysis. Findings - Findings show that the synergetic relations between operational resilience and lean in mitigating performance losses outweigh the trade-off. Just-in-time/flow and total productive maintenance lean practices appear to be major sources for the trade-off; there is limited-synergy leveraged on the anticipative (sense) capability of operational resilience. Research limitations/implications - The dependence on secondary data and small sample size are possible limitations. Future research may employ large-scale studies with the same encoding approach by combining both primary and secondary sources. Practical implications - This study implies that companies need not abandon their lean implementation in order to be resilient against unanticipated disruptive circumstances. Most lean practices can be used to leverage agility to mitigate disruptions. Originality/value - This is a first study to empirically compare synergy/trade-off between operational resilience and lean with reference to changes in operations performance upon disruption. It is also a first study to investigate sources of synergy/trade-off at lean practice bundles and resilience core functions level. This is a much more practical level compared to how previous studies have addressed the issue.

Effectiveness of resilience capabilities in mitigating disruptions: leveraging on supply chain structural complexity2017Inngår i: Supply chain management, ISSN 1359-8546, E-ISSN 1758-6852, Vol. 22, nr 6, s. 506-521Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the influence of supply chain (SC) complexity on the effectiveness of resilience capabilities in mitigating SC disruptions. Hypotheses about direct and moderating influences of complexity on resilience capabilities and performance change after disruption are built and quantitatively tested. Design/methodology/approach: Partial least square-based structural equation modelling with formative constructs was used as an overall approach. Secondary data on SC disruptions, related performance change and resilience practices were collected from multiple sources through a predefined procedure. The collected data were systematically encoded prior to performing statistical analysis. Findings: SC structural complexity is found to have a significant positive relation with performance improvement after disruption, along with resilience capability; it also positively moderates the resilience–performance link. Research limitations/implications: The SC complexity factors the authors considered in this study do not include dynamic forms because of the nature of data collected. Future research may attempt to include and test whether the results of this study also hold when additional complexity parameters are taken into account. Practical implications: Managers are often trying to reduce SC complexity. This study implies that some level of complexity is beneficial also for a better recovery of operational performance affected because of disruption. Resilience capabilities become more effective when leveraged on complexity in the SC. Originality/value: This is the first study to empirically investigate the influence of SC complexity on the resilience–performance link.

Corporate Strategy & Capital Structure: An analysis of their relationship within SMEs inthe Swedish manufacturing industry2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A company's need for an effective and suitable corporate strategy is higher than ever due tofierce and increasing competition in the current business landscape. In order for companies tofinance their chosen corporate strategy, as for instance conduct investments for growth, theyneed proper funding. Moreover, the capital structure defines and outlines a company’s availablemix of debt and equity. Financial theories and studies further conclude that it is paramount forcompanies to understand the relationship between the corporate strategy and the capital structurein order to remain competitive. However, the current amount of empirical studies that have beenconducted in this area is very limited. Therefore, this study has analysed and examined therelationship between the corporate strategy and the capital structure for small and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) in the Swedish manufacturing industry. Indeed, the purpose of the study is toexamine this relationship.

The study has been executed by conducting five case studies where five different SMEs in theSwedish manufacturing industry have been analysed. The companies represent both familyownership as well as ownerships via external investors. The five case studies consisted of semistructuredinterviews with the CEO of each firm. A questionnaire was also provided to the fiverespondents, which enhanced the possibility to benchmark the results from the companies.

The results of the study indicate that the relationship between the corporate strategy and thecapital structure differs depending on a company’s type of ownership. In conclusion, forexternally owned companies (e.g. owned by private equity companies), the corporate strategytends to drive the choice of capital structure. On the other hand, for companies owned by thefounding families, the relationship seems to be inverted where the capital structure rather drivesthe choice of corporate strategy.

From transactions to relationships: Making sense of user-centered perspectives in large technology-intensive companies2015Inngår i: 4th IFIP 13.6 Working Conference on Human Work Interaction Design, HWID 2015, Springer-Verlag New York, 2015, s. 114-124Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we analyze interviews from four technology-intensive companies, focused on service and service development. All companies have during the last two decades introduced interaction design units, and the corporations were selected due to their interest in also expanding the service share of their business. This service shift has been a top-down initiative. However in only two companies, the initiatives have led to the establishment of enterprise wide service development processes, and in the other two companies, the service development is more ad hoc. It is argued that even if interaction design has close theoretical relation to service design such combination has so far been limited. We discuss the shift from product to service view of the offerings within these companies, and relate this to user-centered perspectives. We argue there is a window of opportunity within technology-intensive and engineering focused industries to include user-centered design when formalizing service development.

Assessing brand equity in the luxury wine market by exploiting tastemaker scores2017Inngår i: Journal of Product & Brand Management, ISSN 1061-0421, Vol. 26, nr 5, s. 447-452Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Calculating brand equity, the price differential that a branded product is able to charge compared to an unbranded equivalent, often suffers from a lack of a means to truly determine equivalence. Luxury wines have the benefit of an established measure of equivalency – the Parker score. Robert Parker’s influence as a tastemaker provides a point of comparison across brands. This study looks at brand equity of Bordeaux classified growth wines considering château brands, growths and vintages to illustrate the intangible value for the consumer. Design/methodology/approach: Using price and wine-specific data from Wine-Searcher.com, an online database and search engine, an initial sample of 393 wines with Parker scores ranging from 72 to 100 is presented. A subset of perfect wines, with 100-point Parker scores, is also reviewed focusing on the great vintage of 2009. Findings: The results indicate that brand equity in the luxury wine market exists. Not only is this true for the brand of a specific château, but there is also equity associated with the vintage and the growth. Practical implications: This offers practical implications for brand managers in positioning their wines. Originality/value: An analysis of luxury wines supports the financial perspective on brand equity, especially when there is a viable means of determining equivalence, such as the Parker score.

From Deregulation to change management: A former railroad monopolist learning to live in a new market setting2009Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this paper is to analyze the way top management acted in order to adapt a former railroad monopolist to a new deregulated environment and by that decreasing the amounts of employees with 75 % as well as developing a new corporate strategy. In particular, focus is placed on analyzing how top management acted in order to support the learning needed internally to create acceptance of the fundamental changes of both corporate strategy and structure. The approach used is an investigation on the consistency between the content of change, the context for it as well as the process of change ‐ by using an in‐depth case study. There are few in‐depth case studies on how top management acts in order to support change, particularly in terms of creating learning even though the topic as such have been addressed for several decades. The numbers of failures in change initiatives are severe and over the last twenty years or so, many problems have been raised within this field of research. Several of them boil down to the importance of creating internal understanding for the change needed. This case study show that consistency between actions taken by top management and the content and context of change appeared and is likely to be one major reason why this change process can be considered as successful.

Interpreting a case of outsourcing shift-gears in the carindustry using different theorys simultaneously2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper bring forward a methodology that makes it possible to handle different theoretical models simultaneously when analyzing cases of outsourcing - without ending up with contradictory conclusions. The approach used in the paper is a development of a framework, the analysis of three commonly used models (The Make-or-buy model, the Network approach, and Industrial strategy) and a case study where outsourcing of shift-gears in the car industry is analyzed. The paper addresses the basic need to clarify the fundamental assumptions embedded in theories applied on outsourcing. It also clarifies hands-on how the suggested methodology can be used.

Managing Innovation and implementing New Design Tools and Methods2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this conceptual paper a management-perspective towards the field of innovation is addressed. Important basic aspects towards the paradoxes embedded in the field are investigated. On one hand we are asking for innovations and on the other hand we can observe the difficulty of introducing new methods and tools to the field – for instance the adaptation of design models. Professionals often continue working the same way as previously. In the article it is claimed that this is related to our basic education and the “tool-box” we learn early in life, gradually becoming professionals. A profound comprehension of what mental models underlie the actions of the different kind of engineers managers have to “manage” is useful if management aims at facilitating an innovative and creative management culture. If introducing new design tools and methods this ought to be considered, as well as handled, by managers.

Corporate strategic adaptability to climate change: An explorative study on 1000 European Annual CEO letters 2000 - 20082010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The executive leadership vision is vital in corporate-wide development and implementation of a corporate strategy. The vision on climate change, among other strategic issues, is expressed in annual CEO letters. This study applies a content analysis approach to review 1000 annual reports from European publicly‐traded companies published in years 2000 through 2008. The content analysis of the CEO letters indicate that: (a) corporate interest in the climate change was nearly nonexistent prior to 2004; (b) the greatest interest in the issues was shown in 2007, but since then interest has declined; and (c) meanwhile interest in external economic conditions doubled in 2008 compared to 2006. In summary, our findings raise questions as to whether corporate interest in climate change issues already has peaked, even as well adapted by industry as can be reasonably expected, or if environmental interest will rise again after the current global financial crisis is over.

Educating the new Engineer and Retargeting the Engineering Curriculum for the future Industrial Landscape2011Inngår i: INTED2011 Proceedings, 2011, s. 1145-1152Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

As the former U.S. Secretary of Education expressed it: “We are currently preparing students for jobs and technologies that done yet exist…in order to solve problems we don’t know are problems yet”. This implies a need for Engineering Education to adapt to the fact that the nature of work is changing. This paper discuss how a retargeted Engineering Curriculum can be defined with the help of future pictures of industry. By presenting a different categorization of labor employment statistics new pictures of industry future can be predicted usable when developing the new Engineering Curriculum.

Getting back to scenario planning: Strategic action in the future of Energy Europe2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Scenario planning is a commonly used method in order to analyse complex aspects of the energy system. Historically it has been an important tool to prepare for long-term action. Today however, due to the deregulated market, it could be assumed that scenario analysis is abandoned. Maybe more (the only) attention is on short-term action. This paper presents a review over the time period of 1970 to 2010 on scenario-planning articles. The overall purpose is to evaluate how historical scenario studies stand in a situation of today’s deregulated energy markets.Articles surveyed are published in well-respected and internationally well-spread peer-reviewed journals. Focus is put on 1, when, and by whom, articles have been published 2, for what reasons projects have been taken and with what method 3, what aspect that have been in focus. The articles are also analysed in terms of possible use in today’s deregulated situation.Three conclusions are drawn. Firstly, the main use of scenario planning still tends to be a support to political processes. Secondly, three major issues and drivers for change dominate when different aspects of the energy system are analysed in scenario projects: climate change, security in terms of demand/supply and economic development. Thirdly, it is concluded that scenario planning still tend to be of value when analysing the future of the deregulated energy sector in Europe. However, in order to be fully utilized for the future scenario methodology must take into account that energy industry actors are not being controlled by politics as they where during the regulated period.

Wheeling & Dealing: Scenarios for understanding the European energy future2010Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The deregulation of energy industries in combination with internationalization and a changing Europe requires strategic efforts to be undertaken in a different way than earlier. Policy activitites do not control this sector to the same extent as before – corporate strategies and activities have also become important to understand. During 2002 the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences engaged more than one hundred experts from industry, government and academia to analyze energy within the project “Energy Foresight – Sweden in Europe”. One part of the project, the structure foresight panel, sketched out four different scenarios that each describes a possible European setting for the energy industries - meaning: corporate action was in the center. In this article the aim is to evaluate the result from that scenario project in hindsight and to compare it with other similar scenario projects in this field.

Who is lagging behind in climate change - Europe versus US?: Exploring 2400 CEO letters 2000 – 20092011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The CEO letters included in annual reports express strategic issues and the leadership vision. This study applies a content analysis approach to review 2400 CEO letters from European and US-based publicly‐traded companies published in years 2000 through 2009. The aim is to analyze the development of the interest in adapting climate change issues on the corporate strategic agenda versus other issues of possible concern. The analysis show that the interest in climate issues on one hand has developed in a similar pattern in both regions. Between the years 2000 until 2004 the interest was very limited in both regions, the big growth of interest happened year 2005, since year 2007 the interest have decreased. In summary the findings on the other hand indicate that US industry is lagging behind Europe when it comes to adapting climate change on the corporate strategic agenda.

Metod för företagsekonomer: Uppsats enligt 4-stegsmodellen2018 (oppl. 1)Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

    Uppsats enligt 4-stegsmodellen

The perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge in the internationalizing firm2004Inngår i: Journal of International Management, ISSN 1075-4253, E-ISSN 1873-0620, Vol. 10, s. 355-373Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Because networks are a growing mode of doing business, internationalizing firms need to understand how they can use experiential knowledge of networks. In the context of organizational learning theory, we discuss in this article the perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge, its antecedents, and its performance effects in the internationalization process of firms. A LISREL analysis of 256 firms found that more perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge has a performance enhancing effect. Preceding the perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge is internationalization experiential knowledge. In-depth study of interaction effects found that firms that have diverse market experiences and that are in a new foreign expansion situation particularly find their network experiential knowledge useful. This implies that the internationalizing firm builds routines from diverse market experiences for the development of networks in the early stages of a specific new international business expansion.

Learning and innovation in hybrid organizations: Strategic and organizational insights2017Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Reflecting the emergence of new organizational forms and hybrid organizations, this edited collection explores the processes of exchange, collaboration and technological management that have changed organizational structures. By investigating the impact that inter-organizational collaboration can have on the production and implementation of ideas within new firms, this study contributes to the growing field of innovation and responds to the need for a greater understanding of renewed processes. The authors argue that collaborations need to go beyond existing practices to create emerging paths such as bricolage, experimentation, effectuation and learning. Drawing together a diverse body of literature on the internal dynamics that drive organizational change, Learning and Innovation in Hybrid Organizations presents multiple perspectives on combining organizational flexibility with learning and innovation, and provides implications for future practice. © The Editor(s) and The Author(s) 2018.
