    Abstract [en]

    The public concern for sustainability issues is ever increasing whilst the trust in corporations is decreasing. CEOs now see sustainability concern and compliance as an important component in retaining their competitive advantage and regaining the trust of their surrounding community. For these reasons it is important to find new manners of uniting societal improvement with business, requiring new forms of competencies. This study has investigated what sustainability education is actually central to the industrial engineering profile, as well as what of this is then covered in the programs.

    The study involved two phases. The first involved interviewing experts as to what was central for these engineers to learn, resulting in a content list. The second phase involved mapping the instances of this content in the five largest industrial engineering programs (covering circa 74% of these students) as well as the associated challenges to broaching this content. The first phase was primarily qualitative whilst the second phase was largely quantitative, though each data point consisted of a qualitative interview.

    Five key insights can be drawn from the study regardless of normative stand-point. 1) The sustainability topics that were deemed relevant cover a vast area of disciplines and aspects. 2) There is a skewedness in the content covered, favouring the environmental aspects. 3) There is a lack of integrative instances where the knowledge from different sources and perspectives is synthesized. 4) The key challenges revolve around concept definition and communication. 5) The normativity, interconnectedness and pedagogics contribute with uncertainty and complexity in the assessment of sustainability education.

    The study is finalized with a synthesis of the various insights to arrive at the conclusion that having sustainable business practice as the aim of the programs, establishing common content goals and employing active learning approach would circumvent many of the perceived challenges as well as align the programs with the need of the industry.

    This study contributes with deeper understanding of the sustainability education required and provided to industrial engineering students in Sweden. As such the study has practical applications for the programs studied. The theoretical implications of this study lie in the empirical data achieved regarding the topics of relevance to these engineers, showing high levels of agreement with current literature, as well as the perceived challenges to broaching this content in the current curricula. Furthermore it provides empirical data as to the sustainability education received at different programs.

    Enabling socio-technical transitions – electric vehicles and high voltage electricity grids as focal points of low emission futures2017Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)

    Today humankind is facing numerous sustainability challenges that require us to question CO2 intensive practices like those present in the transport and energy sector. To meet those challenges, many countries have adopted ambitious climate targets. Achieving such targets requires an understanding of the wider socio-technical context of transitions. The aim of this licentiate thesis is therefore to analyse such socio-technical transitions towards low-emission futures enabled by the electrification of passenger cars and high voltage grid development.

    A combination of different transitions theories (for ex. Multi-level perspective and Technological innovation systems) and institutional theory has been used. To reach the aim paper I analyses the climate impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) and policy measures to achieve a breakthrough scenario for EVs. The results show that a mixture of short and long term policies are needed that take into account the technology development stage and behavioural aspects of EV adopters. Paper II addresses the need to include the high voltage transmission grid and its planning procedures as a central part of debates on transitions. Therefore the opportunities, challenges and reasons for conflict in the established regime are studied. The results show that in order to achieve a sustainable grid development regime, it is necessary to spend time on achieving legitimacy and social sustainability. The third paper uses semi-structured expert interviews and focuses on innovation dynamics for EV adoption. By focusing on dynamics instead of single policy measures, it is possible to grasp interactions within a niche, but also in between a niche, regime and landscape. The results show that strong initial technology legitimacy was needed to start substantial innovation dynamics. This could be further strengthened with a strong and broad coalition of actors. Both those factors led, if present, to an improved variety and match of policy instruments.

    As such this thesis has shown that transitions are not just about technology or policy instruments as such but about the dynamics and processes needed to enable them. This can be relevant in other transitions that otherwise may underestimate the importance of these components.

    System innovation dynamics around electric vehicles. The cases of Norway, Denmark and Sweden.Manuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper focuses on the comparison of electric car innovation patterns in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Doing so, it takes a closer look at what the most essential dynamics in the systems were over time and what enabled those dynamics. The main research aim is to contribute to a wider understanding of why Norway is so much ahead of Sweden and Denmark in electric car adoption. The purpose is also to adopt a perspective that goes beyond a mere focus on economic policy instruments. In order to do so different theory elements are combined in a framework. These elements stem from the transition theory literature field, especially the technological innovation system (TIS) and the multi-level perspective (MLP). This combination allows analysing the development behind a dynamic, not just when it comes to an innovation itself but also with regards to the established regime. The data is gathered through analysis of existing documents and data as well as a series of 27 expert interviews conducted in the three case countries. The findings suggest that there are important differences in transition patterns that can account for the electric vehicle (EV) diffusion situation we can find nowadays in the three Nordic countries. An important stepping stone was the need for a very strong legitimacy of the original EV vision that is also anchored in a coordinated, sector overarching coalition of actors that thinks strategically and long term. Moreover some general beneficial dynamics could be identified across the countries in question. In Norway these beneficial dynamics can be summarised as a systems motor, in Denmark as a failed entrepreneurial motor that shifted towards a constrained municipal motor and in Sweden as a loosely, coordinated and weaker version of a systems motor.

    This chapter examines current policy drivers of battery electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs, the current and anticipated impacts on carbon emissions, as well as what potential role policy can play in enhancing the innovation system and market development around such vehicles in the future. We start with a policy review of key targets in the Nordic countries and the EU, up to 2030, and discuss to what extent they are consistent with industry and expert estimates of how the systems can grow. On the basis of this, the second part elaborates two simple scenarios of EV development in the EU: one breakthrough expansion scenario and one incremental expansion scenario. Building on that is an analysis of the climate impacts of the two scenarios, given different assumptions relating to, for example, electricity production as well as EV penetration in the fleet. The third part examines what policy drivers might be needed to enable the breakthrough scenario, using a technological innovation systems perspective to describe the needed processes, drivers and developments.

    Last couple of years’ vehicles propelled by electricity generated from a hydrogen fuel cell has

    emerged as an alternative to the fossil fuel vehicles, so that the greenhouse gas emissions

    causing climate change can decrease. In Sandviken, a collaboration between the municipality,

    Sandvik AB and AGA has resulted in a hydrogen refuelling station, only the fourth in

    Sweden. As the knowledge and awareness of hydrogen fuel cells is unknown Sandvik AB

    wants to investigate what the general opinion and knowledge is but more importantly, how

    can pedagogical theories be used to increase awareness and knowledge.

    The purpose of this thesis is therefore to examine what the population of Sandviken think of a

    development of a hydrogen society as well as climate change and the concept of sustainable

    development. Based on the found status of knowledge and awareness in these issues a couple

    of tools and actions are suggested on how to increase general knowledge and awareness,

    applicable both for schools and organisations outside school.

    The method used to fulfil the purpose was a survey that was sent out to people employed at

    Sandviken municipality and Sandvik AB. The survey results were analysed to see which

    factors correlate with a likelihood to support a hydrogen society development. That is used to

    see what approach to use when educating people about hydrogen and sustainable

    development.

    The results show that people in Sandviken were very positive about the hydrogen refuelling

    station, and the level of knowledge people had did not significantly affect how much support

    they showed. However, the people’s support for a hydrogen development is greatly affected

    by the fact that a refuelling station has been built. Therefore, the result that the level of

    hydrogen knowledge seems irrelevant should not be taken as a general fact true for all

    societies.

    When educating people about hydrogen one should put emphasis on raising awareness and

    knowledge in sustainable development and climate change, since that has a positive effect on

    the likelihood to support a hydrogen development. This could be done via a, in this report

    constructed, SSI case (socio-scientific issues) that can be adjusted to fit environments and

    occasions outside school.

For 0 <= q < 1, we prove optimal growth rate for solutions u to the above system near free boundary points, and show that in a uniform neighbourhood of any a priori well-behaved free boundary point the free boundary is C-1,C-alpha in space directions and half-Lipschitz in the time direction.

    Abstract [en]

    Recent developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) drive businesses to introduce digitally advanced products, services, processes, and mechanisms to various markets (Krauset al. 2022; Parida et al. 2019). In this manner, the healthcare sector proves as a propitious industry for successful AI-application (Jiang et al. 2017; Yu et al. 2018). However, expected business gains cannot be achieved through the sole integration of AI-systems into healthcare products, processes and/ or services (Åström et al. 2022; Lee et al. 2019). To appropriately operationalise and commercialise AI-based offerings, so-called AI-solution-specialists are urged to change, adapt, and modify their prevailing business models (BMs) (Frank et al. 2019;Kiel et al. 2017). This study addresses the mentioned research gap by providing a thorough investigation of relevant literature and conducting a qualitative research methodology. By the means of guideline-based, structured interviews, data from seven cases on AI-based businessmodels in the healthcare sector were collected. With our findings we propose one theoretical framework on healthcare-specific AI-enabled BM modifications and one model on generalised AI-based value chain activities. In this way, we deliver insights into how AI is utilised in healthcare firms and how it is ultimately integrated into firm operating models - highly contributing to current literature. Further, our proposed frameworks serve as blueprints supporting practitioners in successfully creating, delivering, and capturing value stemming from AI-based technologies. Finally, being limited in scope, we propose future research to extend the study’s focus to an ecosystem-perspective and further apply a longitudinal research design to observe AI-enabled business model changes over a longer time span.

    Expropriation, Valuation and Compensation in Ethiopia2014Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This study examines how the expropriation, valuation and compensation process are carried out in Ethiopia when privately held land and attached real properties are taken for public and private investment purposes. The study  examines three case studies, inquiring whether the process of expropriation and valuation are transparent and  justified or not and the compensation paid is fair and reasonable from an international perspective. A valid with  theoretical background, the study examines practical problems that faced expropriatees and searches for possible theoretical explanations. The study also assesses whether there is a gap between the laws and the practice undertake on the ground.

    The study reveals that expropriation as a concept and a land policy tool has economic and political justification and acceptance in Ethiopia. Similar to other developing countries, Ethiopia has faced enormous economic and social problems. The question of housing and other real estate construction for high population pressure, the development and investment questions, poor public utility facilities and other public interests are some of the problems that need the intervention of both the Federal and Regional governments. In order to facilitate these needs of the society, the Federal government, the City Administrations and/or Regional governments have been using “expropriation” as a meaningful and useful management tool. However,  the field survey result  reveals that different compensation standards among government institutions, inadequate compensation standards for loss of land use rights, lack of professional and certified property valuers, lack of reliable and up to date data and nontransparent expropriation and valuation procedures are some of the main problems that impend the proper and equitable implementation of expropriation, valuation and compensation in the country in general and the study areas in particular.

    Another emerging issue is how the land laws especially the expropriation and payment of compensation laws are applied. It is evident that the application of and adherence to legal provisions with consistency, transparency and objectivity; by the acquiring authorities in ensuring that fairness is done, seems to be quite crucial. On the other hand, non-adherence to such laws brings numerous implementation problems in such programs. Whereas the affected expropriatees need “fair treatment and compensation” the government wants to pay a “manageable compensation” so, this thesis argues for a reasonable compensation to be established by striking a balance between these two view points.

    This study ends up by proposing that both the Federal and Regional governments should revise the land laws especially the expropriation and payment of compensation laws in such a way that it would define and protect property rights for the vulnerable groups both in urban and rural areas and where and when these rights are acquired “reasonable compensation” must be paid.

    Sounds of Science is the first movement of a symphony for many (scientific) instruments and voices, united in celebration of the frontiers of science and intended for a general audience. John Goodenough, the maestro who transformed energy usage and technology through the invention of the lithium-ion battery, opens the programme, reflecting on the ultimate limits of battery technology. This applied theme continues through the subsequent pieces on energy-related topics-the sodium-ion battery and artificial fuels, by Martin Mansson-and the ultimate challenge for 3D printing, the eventual production of life, by Anthony Atala. A passage by Gerianne Alexander follows, contemplating a related issue: How might an artificially produced human being behave? Next comes a consideration of consciousness and free will by Roland Allen and Suzy Lidstrom. Further voices and new instruments enter as Warwick Bowen, Nicolas Mauranyapin and Lars Madsen discuss whether dynamical processes of single molecules might be observed in their native state. The exploitation of chaos in science and technology, applications of Bose-Einstein condensates and the significance of entropy follow in pieces by Linda Reichl, Ernst Rasel and Roland Allen, respectively. Mikhail Katsnelson and Eugene Koonin then discuss the potential generalisation of thermodynamic concepts in the context of biological evolution. Entering with the music of the cosmos, Philip Yasskin discusses whether we might be able to observe torsion in the geometry of the Universe. The crescendo comes with the crisis of singularities, their nature and whether they can be resolved through quantum effects, in the composition of Alan Coley. The climax is Mario Krenn, Art Melvin and Anton Zeilinger's consideration of how computer code can be autonomously surprising and creative. In a harmonious counterpoint, his 'Guidelines for considering AIs as coauthors', Roman Yampolskiy concludes that code is not yet able to take responsibility for coauthoring a paper. An interlude summarises a speech by Zdenek Papousek. In a subsequent movement, new themes emerge as we seek to comprehend how far we have travelled along the path to understanding, and speculate on where new physics might arise. Who would have imagined, 100 years ago, a global society permeated by smartphones and scientific instruments so sophisticated that genes can be modified and gravitational waves detected?

    China is the most populous country in the world and has an increasing economy. A growingeconomy enhances the electricity requirement, product demands and so on, which affects both the surrounding environment but also the global environment.Wuhai is an industrial city and the most polluted city in Inner Mongolia, China. Numerous amounts of the industries are lacking in the emission treatment and the PM10 is more then 10 times the allowed amount of European Union.This master thesis is a part of a bigger project, a corporation between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute Ltd and Environmental Protection Bureau in Wuhai.The Coke Company Huaxi Jiohua Ltd. was founded 1992, and has a producing capability of300.000 tons coke per year. The treatment station is a model of an ASP, without a sludge recycling and a sludge thickener instead of sedimentation basin. The treatment efficiency is failing in phenol removal.The aim of this thesis is to perform a feasible study of the wastewater treatment methods foran improvement of the separation of pollutions in coke wastewater and to give a proposal forimprovement of energy efficiency from wastewater treatment.Treatment efficiency of methods such as A2/O, A/O, SBR, and ASP was taken inconsideration.Due to the lack of basic treatment, a first suggestion is to optimize the biological parameters,and introduce sludge recycling to the system together with either a following sedimentationpool or a MBBR as a pre-treatment step.To gain energy from the wastewater treatment station, a replacing of the current aerator system in the aeration unit to fine bubble diffusers and introduce a heat exchanger in the cooling of gas step could be done.

    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis investigates the museum exhibition Royal Wedding Dresses at the Stockholm castle. This exhibition was temporary and closed in April 2017. The overall purpose is to map what can be done in order to raise interest and create meaning in a broader audience including younger people to take part in the exhibition, and create meaning of it after it has been closed down. An additional purpose is to investigate how, why, and whom the museum exhibition Royal Wedding Dresses can interest using virtual reality (VR), after the end of the exhibition.

    In this survey, a literature study, interviews and observations are performed regarding the exhibition Royal Wedding Dresses. This is the basis for developing a VR application prototype where major parts of the exhibition are included. Finally, the application is evaluated for technical interaction and how the virtual visit has been evaluated, to assess whether VR can create interest in, and develop, the exhibition for a wider audience.

    The result indicates that the application has good technical interaction, but the original exhibition does not encourage the visitor to experience it, and the application is unable to develop it in this regard. The application will not be more interesting for a younger audience than its content. With the help of aspects of serious gaming and social interaction, as well as future studies on the subject with more respondents and an expanded perspective, it may be possible to overcome these limitations. If technical interaction and social interaction can be integrated, the experience can also be developed and be put in a meaningful context that encourages experience and better retention of the virtual visit.

    In principle, there is a municipal planning monopoly in Sweden, and the planning system is therefore basically designed for the municipalities. All municipalities must have a comprehensive plan that covers their entire area of responsibility. Although the plan is not binding, it must be kept up to date. The detailed development plan is a legally binding, executive planning instrument - a legal agreement between the municipality, the public and landowners - that makes it possible for the intentions of the comprehensive plan to be implemented. Special area regulations are also binding, and this form of planning is used within limited areas to guarantee compliance with certain comprehensive plan goals. A property regulation plan may be used to facilitate implementation of the detailed development plan. For the planning of matters that are of mutual interest to several municipalities, the national government may appoint a regional planning body with the task of monitoring regional questions and providing basic planning data for municipalities and Government authorities.

    Abstract [en]

    Technological solutions to the challenge of dangerous climate change are urgent and necessary but to be effective they need to be accompanied by reductions in the total level of consumption and production of goods and services. This is for three reasons. First, private consumption and its associated production are among the key drivers of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions, especially among highly emitting industrialized economies. There is no evidence that decoupling of the economy from GHG emissions is possible at the scale and speed needed. Second, investments in more sustainable infrastructure, including renewable energy, needed in coming decades will require extensive amounts of energy, largely from fossil sources, which will use up a significant share of the two-degree carbon budget. Third, improving the standard of living of the world’s poor will consume a major portion of the available carbon allowance. The scholarly community has a responsibility to put the issue of consumption and the associated production on the research and policy agenda.

    Despite the importance of economic growth for the current economy, business and societal planning there are few long-term growth projections undertaken. There is, however, a vivid debate on what is called the 'new normal' - secular stagnation - which is undertaken within academic disciplines. This overview covers mainstream, heterodox and scientifically oriented economic perspectives on the prospects for economic growth in the 21st century. The survey shows that existing long-term projections and scenarios indicate growth rates ranging from around half a percentage point less than during the last two decades (projected by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD), to dramatically lower growth rates). Differences stem from different perspectives on the determinants of economic growth and the potential for improvements in productivity. Headwinds are: an aging population, especially in OECD countries; resource constraints, including energy; increasing environmental costs in particular due to the consequences of climate change; overaccumulation; increasing income differences; and declining social capital. One conclusion is that policymaking based on the assumption that economic growth will continue at pre-crisis levels is unwise and risky.

    Real capital investments are important for a transition to a more sustainable economy and for the continuous process of creative destruction and economic development. At the same time investments have negative environmental effects. In this paper we analyze to what extent the current investments in real capital (i.e.,buildings, machinery and infrastructures) in Sweden are sustainable in regard of the most important resources used in investments and in terms of CO2 emissions. This is evaluated based on Sweden's share of a sustainable use of these resources and our share of the remaining carbon budget for achieving the Paris agreement. In the analysis we have used best publicly available data and methods to indicatively establish sustainable levels of resource use and emissions. We find that 1 million invested SEK (US$ 110,000) generate 15–75 tonnes of CO2 emissions and use 80–260 MWh of energy, and on average 4.8 tonnes of iron, 0.2 tonnes of aluminum, 260 tonnes of gravel and sand and 6 tonnes of timber. Our analysis shows that within 50 years current investment would use up Sweden's CO2 budget available for achieving the Paris agreement, leaving no room for emissions from consumption. The use of timber, gravel and sand is above Sweden's share of a global yearly sustainable production. The current use of iron and aluminum can be maintained for 20–50 years, but approaches the sustainability criteria with a 200 year perspective.

    We analyze how family ties affect incentives, with focus on the strategic interaction between two mutually altruistic siblings. The siblings exert effort to produce output under uncertainty, and they may transfer output to each other. With equally altruistic siblings, their equilibrium effort is nonmonotonic in the common degree of altruism, and it depends on the harshness of the environment. We define a notion of local evolutionary stability of degrees of sibling altruism and show that this degree is lower than the kinship-relatedness factor. Numerical simulations show how family ties vary with the environment, and how this affects economic outcomes.

    What kind of preferences should one expect evolution to favor? We propose a definition of evolutionary stability of preferences in interactions in groups of arbitrary finite size. Groups are formed under random matching that may be assortative. Individuals' preferences are their private information. The set of potential preferences are all those that can be represented by continuous functions. We show that a certain class of such preferences, that combine self-interest with morality of a Kantian flavor, are evolutionarily stable, and that preferences resulting in other behaviors are evolutionarily unstable. We also establish a connection between evolutionary stability of preferences and a generalized version of Maynard Smith's and Price's (1973) notion of evolutionary stability of strategies.

    The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has recently adopted the Saudi Teaching Competencies Standard (STCS). This paper tries to answer how these competencies are achieved, how they are maintained, and what support exists to support teaching CS competently in the KSA. This paper presents the results of an investigation of teacher awareness of, and attitudes to, the STCS in the Kingdom. Through the study reported here, we address an urgent need in the Kingdom to understand teacher preparedness in terms of CS teaching competencies. The study draws on interviews with ten CS teachers in five different cities in the KSA. A thematic coding analysis approach was used. This study explores the CS teaching competencies held by teachers in three areas of CS teaching, focusing on connection to society, professional practice and professional development. The results of the study highlight the CS teaching competencies that CS teachers feel they currently grasp well in the KSA. By enhancing awareness of what teachers currently do well we contribute to the adjustment and improvement of the STCS and help to build a program which addresses the current in-service training needs of CS teachers. The outcomes also help to raise awareness of the challenges of implementing the Computer Education curriculum in KSA schools.

    Microplastics take hundreds to thousands of years to degrade in nature, and pose a threat to the environment. A photocatalytical degradation method have been developed to take advantage of solar light to degrade microplastics, however it takes several months to degrade microplastics with the process. The purpose of this study is to enhance the degradation rate of microplastics by synthesizing a material where photocatalysis is combined with Fenton reaction. A material with zinc oxide nanorods coated with tin oxide and decorated with iron particles (𝑍𝑛𝑂/𝑆𝑛𝑂2/𝐹𝑒0) was synthesized and used to degrade methylene blue, polystyrene and polypropylene. The result show that the degradation rate with a 𝑍𝑛𝑂/𝑆𝑛𝑂2/𝐹𝑒0 – sample is faster than with a 𝑍𝑛𝑂 – sample, and that it can be used to degrade polystyrene and polypropylene.Students’ view on researchers can affect the development of their interest and attitude towards science. Study visits to laboratories have been used to increase students’ interest and give them new experiences. The purpose of this study is to investigate what and how high school students learn during a study visit to a nanotechnology laboratory, and how the study visit affects high school students’ interest and motivation for research and learning. A study visit with 5 stations was organized, and students were given a questionnaire about what they learned during the study visit. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the students’ answers. The result shows that the study visit increased students’ interest in research, and the importance of designing stations so that they are connected to students’ previous knowledge and are within their proximal development zone.

    Det senaste decenniet har nya finansieringsmetoder vuxit fram ibland de kommersiella fastighetsbolagens finansieringsportföljer. Framförallt emitteras företagsobligationer i en allt större utsträckning. För att få en god tillgång till kapitalmarknaden ställs krav på bolagens ägarstruktur, balansräkning och fastighetsportföljens egenskaper. Finansinspektionen uppgav 2019 att de ser positivt på den ökande marknadsfinansieringen men lyfter samtidigt oron i attdet saknas erfarenhet av hur väl kapitalmarknaden fungerar som finansiär under en kris. Utmaningen för fastighetsbolagen ligger i att hitta ett finansieringsupplägg som tar tillvara på den hävstångseffekt som skuldsättning skapar samtidigt som man minimerar de medföljande riskerna.

    Detta examensarbete syftar till att undersöka utvecklingen och drivkraften bakom nya finansieringsmetoder hos kommersiella fastighetsbolag i Sverige. Målet är att kunna dra slutsatser kring hur finansieringsmetoder skiljer sig beroende på fastighetsbolagens storlek.Vidare syftar studien till att identifiera de drivande faktorerna bakom den växande marknadsfinansieringen samt vilka för- och nackdelar marknadsfinansieringen innebär. Studienutgår från en kvantitativ enkätundersökning som undersöker fastighetsbolagens finansieringsmetoder och beslutsfaktorer vid finansiering. Detta efterföljs av en kvalitativintervju studie med semi-strukturerade intervjuer med aktörer från fastighetsbolag, banksektorn, investerare samt Finansinspektionen.

    Studien visar att marknadsfinansiering främst används av bolag med ett fastighetsbestånd på över 30 miljarder kronor. Undantaget är fastighetsbolag inom stabila segment såsom samhällsfastigheter och bostäder samt bolag med långsiktigt institutionellt ägande. Nyemission och kreativa upplägg såsom crowdfunding och säljarrevers tycks ligga närmre till hands förbolag av mindre storlek. Vidare anges prisfördelen, diversifieringsaspekten och flexibiliteten som kommer med en icke-säkerställd finansiering vara marknadsfinansieringens främsta drivkrafter. Lågräntemiljön har även drivit på efterfrågan från investerare som tidigare främst investerat i statsobligationer och säkerställda bostadsobligationer. Den slutsats som kan dras avstudien är att samtliga aktörer ser positivt på fastighetsbolagens marknadsfinansiering men att det bör hållas på balanserad nivå där den långsiktiga efterfrågan på företagsobligationer möter en sund efterfrågan på finansiering hos fastighetsbolagen.

    The need for improved public transport (PT) ticketing in ever-growing deregulated PT markets has made well-designed integrated ticketing systems a priority area of intervention for PT service providers around the world. Yet, very little practical evidence of its impacts are reported in Sweden and in the world at large. The focus of this study was the impacts of the Movingo integrated ticketing scheme in terms of PT patronage, user satisfaction and the perceived quality of the ticketing set-up. Three travel surveys were conducted along the Stockholm-Uppsala route. Methods including logistic regression and correlated t-tests were used to analyse the samples. The findings suggest that the scheme made rail commuting more attractive resulting in an overall increase of about 24% in ticket sales with 3%–15% car commuters reporting that they patronised PT services after the project. The scheme also resulted in increased rail commuter satisfaction. The overall perceived quality of the ticketing set-up did not however improve due to interoperability challenges. Service providers’ uncertainty about equitable distribution of revenue among the participating service providers, interoperability challenges and the lack of interest among most of the participating service providers to sell Movingo tickets are some issues to be addressed.

    One of the main problems in developing countries is unplanned urban growth and land use change. Timely identification of new constructions can be a good solution to mitigate some environmental and social problems. This study examined the possibility of identifying new constructions in urban areas using images from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), Google Earth and Sentinel-2. The accuracy of the land cover map obtained using these images was investigated using pixel-based processing methods (maximum likelihood, minimum distance, Mahalanobis, spectral angle mapping (SAM)) and object-based methods (Bayes, support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest-neighbor (KNN), decision tree, random forest). The use of DSM to increase the accuracy of classification of UAV images and the use of NDVI to identify vegetation in Sentinel-2 images were also investigated. The object-based KNN method was found to have the greatest accuracy in classifying UAV images (kappa coefficient = 0.93), and the use of DSM increased the classification accuracy by 4%. Evaluations of the accuracy of Google Earth images showed that KNN was also the best method for preparing a land cover map using these images (kappa coefficient = 0.83). The KNN and SVM methods showed the highest accuracy in preparing land cover maps using Sentinel-2 images (kappa coefficient = 0.87 and 0.85, respectively). The accuracy of classification was not increased when using NDVI due to the small percentage of vegetation cover in the study area. On examining the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods, a novel method for identifying new rural constructions was devised. This method uses only one UAV imaging per year to determine the exact position of urban areas with no constructions and then examines spectral changes in related Sentinel-2 pixels that might indicate new constructions in these areas. On-site observations confirmed the accuracy of this method.

    Few different goods or beverages are as particular as wine in History of humanity, even being the main symbol of luxury and status from days of Rome. Its particular intoxicating effects together its complex and long-term elaboration makes wine one of the biggest attractions for food and beverages lovers.Unfortunately, being one of the most famous beverages in History does not provide wine to be a competitive good without proper commercial strategies. Due the big local offer and costs reduction, markets are saturated and the competitiveness versus other wines and other kind of drinks make more difficult to survive in a diverse and constantly evolving sector. Therefore, internationalization and marketing strategies become the key of success for small and medium size wineries to survive in this business ecosystem.The following thesis explores different marketing strategies developed on different wine markets, taking a small Spanish winery as a case study. In order to give an insight of the current strategies carried out by the company, the author interviews the main direction of the winery and analyse the data collected versus the theoretical framework developed. In addition, two other interviews on different levels of the wine market will be added to reinforce the empirical framework: from a wine import company and form a public institution for the promotion of the Spanish companies.

    This degree project examines the feasibility of implementing a community of practice within the contract education course ”Sustainable Transport Systems” offered at KTH Royal Institute of Sweden in collaboration with Scania. This degree project aims to investigate if it would be possible to increase participation in the course by creating study circles led by circle leaders who have completed the course. Four interviews were conducted and analyzed using thematic analysis, leading to the identification of four themes. A beta test was then conducted with 15 Scania employees who had yet to take the course, in which they participated in two condensed modules led by a circle leader. Results suggest a potential for implementing a community of practice, as circle leaders and employees saw value in the format and appreciated the opportunities for discussion and reflection on sustainability. The proposed concept is that the course serves as an introduction to a community of practice focusing on sustainability at Scania, where an attitude towards sustainability is developed and concrete improvement proposals for sustainability work are created through the course’s projects.

    Increasing the situational awareness within the supply chain by sharing information and conducting accurate demand forecasts helps the companies in staying competitive, overcoming different uncertainties and enhancing financial gains. Furthermore, it is important for the supply chain entities to get accurate, timely and relevant information to be able to gain benefits within the network of the supply chain. Despite having the knowledge of the importance of such actions, firms across different industries are affected by poor, delayed and inexact information. Lack of information sharing within the supply chain compels supply chain players in making decisions with limited demand forecast information, which affect forecasting of future demand. This study has investigated the difficulties in information sharing and how these difficulties affect the aspect of demand forecasting. To conduct the research, a qualitative case study method has been chosen. A pre-study along with reviewing literature was done in order to provide a theoretical framework for the study. The empirical data included semi-structured interviews with eleven Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) businesses in the Swedish manufacturing industry.

    The analysis shows that in order enable information sharing within the supply chain, two capabilities i.e. connectivity and willingness need to be taken into consideration. The difficulties identified in this study inhibit these two capabilities leading to challenges in information sharing within the supply chain. Three difficulties inhibiting connectivity were identified: high cost of IT-systems, IT-incompatibility and user-friendliness of IT-systems. Furthermore, four difficulties inhibiting willingness were identified: collaboration complexity, lack of trust, unawareness of benefits of information sharing and culture. Difficulties in information sharing inhibit the ability to share information which leads to lack of information sharing, lack of access to right type of information and low quality of the shared information. Literature and the empirical data shows that information sharing, access to the right type of information and high quality of the shared information are crucial when it comes to demand forecasting. Therefore, difficulties within information sharing inhibit the ability to conduct demand forecasting and lead to demand forecast uncertainties i.e. errors and inaccuracies in the forecasts. The results of this study have implications from a managerial, sustainability and theoretical aspect.

    Throughout the history of Architecture and Urbanism, many efforts were made and continue being done in order to learn how to successfully design good built environments for human beings. This goal has not only expanded to several other fields such as Geography, Sociology, and Environmental Psychology but also received new and invaluable contributions from several other unexpected fields. Such might be the case with the field of Viticulture and its interesting concept of terroir which has already been used to address topics connected with urbanism and against the increased globalization. The process of globalization in which people are instead considered as citizens of a new global world order reduces the place and rather creates a world of “placelessness”. As a concept, terroir sheds light on the importance of authenticity and how a sense of feeling can generate a cultural identity. However, in a time where neoliberal politics are increasing with a strengthened nationalism, it can also be a source of politics. Although its authenticity can be used as a means to work against globalization, it can also install a perception of unity to the local people, therefore excluding foreigners and maintaining an ideal that is unattainable for multicultural cities.

    The purpose of this paper is to primarily suggest a definition for a new concept entitled urban terroir and to reveal the elements of the interactive urban ecosystem of a place embodied in our cities’ characteristic and distinctive qualities. In addition, the paper also has an objective of understanding how architects, planners, politicians, and developers can deeply understand terroir when creating places and policies without excluding people from the developed cultural identity it is meant to create. This is possible by interviewing residents from three cities in France, Mulhouse, Dunkerque, and Toulouse, and different areas in the municipality of Stockholm about their respective perception of terroir in the form of authenticity and its linkage to placemaking that may act as an accelerator to further exclusion of cultural minorities in the urban environment.

    The obtained results conclude a definition of urban terroir as a compilation of elements and certain characteristics that collectively, with respect to the residents in an area, make up the essence of a city. These elements comprise the architecture and its historical significance, inherent traditions tied to the region, temporal legibility, the elements of scale including nodes, paths, landmarks, districts as well as edges, and ultimately, the inclusion of minorities. The author also raises the potential romanticization of nationalism with terroir and authenticity. Thus, policies according to Interculturalism are derived which firstly include acknowledging the impact that politicians have. This includes securing housing, providing strategies to work against the identified ethnic segregation, and developing an agenda that promotes interactions whilst simultaneously nurturing inclusive cultural identities. As for architects and urban planners, the study concludes the potential placemaking has in fostering micro-public places in the city where different cultures can meet. The authenticity behind these places should go beyond the physical attributes and instead include the people living in the city. It becomes crucial to view the city as not limited to the inner-city, but also validate the right to the city and placemaking of inhabitants residing in the periphery by organizing initiatives that foster growth in such areas of the city. By working against the identified current state, in the form of generating authentic interactions with a social attachment to minority cultures, urban planners are able to present an understanding of the inevitable political aspect of placemaking.

    In Sweden, where a decentralized healthcare system is applied, all patients are registered at a primary healthcare center. To access most of the publicly funded specialized care clinics, patients need to be referred by a general physician at the primary healthcare center. However, long waiting times and queues to access specialized care clinics in Sweden, has been a serious problem and concern for decades. Addressing this issue is important for improving patients’ transition to specialized care and the functionality of the Swedish healthcare system. The aim of this thesis is to explore the Swedish healthcare system to analyze the transition of patients to specialized care clinics and identify the reasons for long waiting times and queues. This was done by analyzing the Swedish healthcare system and develop a serious game prototype which models the process of access to specialized care within the Swedish healthcare system. The prototype was used to understand the delay that happens in patients’ transition and access process to specialized care services.  A system analysis including a literature review is conducted to gain an understanding of the Swedish healthcare system and gather data to be used in the designed prototype. The outcome of the system analysis is a visual representation of the Swedish healthcare system including laws and stakeholders. A game frame is developed from the system analysis. Maps, tables, and a flow-diagram are developed to visualize patients’ access to specialized care. All of this was used to design the game prototype. The final prototype is developed through an iterative process, where several prototypes are designed and tested through game sessions with experts. The prototypes are evaluated after each game session. Finally, learning and findings gained from the prototypes design and the game sessions are documented. This includes reasons for long waiting times for a first visit at a specialized care clinic such as the structure of the Swedish healthcare system, mainly that the PHC is the foundation of the system. Staff shortages, and the need for a referral to access most of the specialized clinics are also discussed and stated along with other reasons.

    The current shortage of senior housing and the lack of accessibility in today's million-program housing creates concern among the older age group when the need to move becomes necessary with aging. Nowadays, more and more older groups are experiencing a fear of no longer being able to stay in their current homes due to lack of accessibility, which can make everyday life more difficult. Between the period 1965-1974 a million homes were built, which today are facing extensive refurbishment. By increasing the availability of these homes, the demand for senior housing can be accommodated while contributing to a more accessible society. In order to increase accessibility and contribute to an optimal living environment for seniors, technical building measures are required to be taken, as well as improvement regarding the floor plan. A pleasant indoor climate, access to a lift, spacious bathrooms and meeting places are some of the accomodationg that seniors value in their residential building. This report thus examines the required construction technical solutions to increase accessibility and improve the living environment in an existing residential building built under the million program in Finspång municipality. It also examines whether these solutions are technically and financially feasible to carry out, as well as researching what seniors generally appreciate in their living environments.

    Can transparency interventions improve WASH service provision? We use a randomized experiment to evaluate the impacts of a transparency intervention, a deliberative multi-stakeholder workshop initiated with a community scorecard exercise, in schools in rural Bangladesh. To measure impacts, we combine survey data, direct observations, and administrative data. The intervention leads to moderate but consistent improvements in knowledge of WASH standards and practices, and institutions for WASH service management, but does not improve school WASH service provision or change WASH facility use patterns. Drawing on rich descriptive data, we suggest several reasons why the intervention we evaluate did not improve WASH service outcomes and propose ways to improve the design of future interventions.

    Global competition has been making it harder for the European manufacturing sector to stay competitive and at the same time value for the customer is not only created by the product, but also from factors as technical knowledge, co-development and availability. Therefore, manufacturing companies are shifting their focus from selling products to selling integrated combinations of products and services. Paper companies operating in less commoditized segments that require a high technical know-how has so far resisted commoditization. But increased competition makes it hard for this kind of companies to maintain premium prices. Therefore the purpose of this study firstly is to explore what PSS (Product-service systems) strategies are used by suppliers of intermediate goods and secondly, determine how the case company could develop PSS in the future. To fulfill this purpose the following research questions have been formulated:

    Main research question:

    How can paper companies operating in less commoditized segments develop their product-service systems further?

    Sub-research questions:

    What kind of services should the case company offer?

    How should the case company package their service offering?

    In order to answer the research questions a qualitative approach has been applied. This has been done by conducting a case study on an international paper company operating in less commoditized segments, where two business units were selected to focus on. In total 19 employees from the case company were interviewed. To further support the findings and to get inspiration of possible PSS, employees from eight external companies were interviewed.

    The findings show that the case company has a relevant service portfolio but there are areas of improvement when looking at the execution of services and conceptualization of the PSS. Furthermore, the findings show that the PSS should be product oriented and that the two business units should focus on slightly different services even though they are both operating in less commoditized segments.

    The findings also show that the case company must have services that are bundled with the product in order to avoid that the customers’ purchasers makes cost-break-downs. At the same time the case company should define the value on as many services as possible in order for the customer to perceive the value added from services. Towards current customers this can be done by documenting the service that the customer has been receiving and the value that has given, and bring it to price negotiations. Moreover, adding a price on the service makes customer perceive the value of the service more and therefore some selected services should be charged for.

    Social theory has paid little attention to air, despite its centrality to bodily existence and air pollution being named the world’s biggest public health crisis. Where attention to air is found, the body is largely absent. On the other hand, conceptualizing the body without life-sustaining breath fails to highlight breathing as the ongoing metabolic bodily act in which the materiality of human and more-than-human intermingle and transmute one another. Political ecology studies how unequal power structures and knowledge production reproduce human–environment relations, including a nascent focus on the body and air – but as separate issues. This article argues that a political ecology of air would productively fuse with a political ecology of the body to bring the visceral realm into intersectional analysis of air’s contemporary materialities. A feminist political ecology situates explicitly air-and-breathing-bodies, their intimately posthuman, relational, elemental and corpomaterial intra-action, at the heart of such analysis.

    In order to reduce the climate impact of Europe, the Swedish government and the European Union present increasingly stricter requirements for the construction industry regarding energy performance of newly built apartment buildings. The housing sector ccounts fora  considerablepart  of the energy demand in Sweden. While construction companies work withimprovements  of the energy performance, the difference from one project to another can very significantly. Earlier studies have examined external factors influencing  how far companies are prepared  to go regarding  energy performance, but little has been researched   regarding the internal factors.

    The purpose  of this thesis is therefore to identify these internal factors  but also to explain  why they influence the process. To examine this, a case study was conducted on a Swedish construction company where large parts of the actors within  the internal construction process were represented. Semi structured interviews  were conducted in order to get a  detailed picture of the process and the factors influencing it. The interview data was  sorted, reduced and analyzed  through support of a theoretical framework. In this framework,  theories from earlier studies were included, together with different Knowledge Management-theories, which were used to facilitate the interpreting and understanding of the factors that  had been observed.

    The results of the study suggest  that there are internal factors influencing the process, in the case company, towards  increased energy performance in apartment buildings. Examples of the factors are:  individual interest and opinion, point in time when the energy issue was lifted, how knowledge is reused, follow up of calculations and choice of medium for knowledge transfer. Many of these identified factors are connected to the attitude and strategy regarding energy questions that the upper management choses to communicate. Actors in the process will adopt the attitude that is communicated, and this creates a possibility for the company  to make a choice regarding how much effort should be put into continued improved energy  performance.

    With an increasing urban population around the world, the need for urban freight distribution is constantly growing. Many cities face problems with traffic congestion, especially during eak hours in the morning and afternoon. At the same time, the roads are often nearly empty during nighttime. In some cities, like Stockholm, heavy haulage is not permitted to enter the city during the night. This means that carriers are forced to perform these deliveries during the day, which leads to inefficient distribution.

    To investigate the possibilities to use nighttime hours for deliveries, which could lead to a more efficient distribution system and increased sustainability of the city, a pilot project has been initiated by the City of Stockholm to test off-peak deliveries. Other similar trial projects have encountered difficulties with getting businesses to participate, and the incentives to shift to offpeak deliveries have been unclear. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate what incentives there are for actors within a supply chain to make this shift and the key factors that enable the supply chain to benefit.

    The thesis is performed as a case study on the pilot project in Stockholm, and uses a business model perspective to analyze how value is created and captured throughout the supply chain. The results show that there is potential for supply chains to increase its total value through offpeak deliveries as a result of increased efficiency, improved delivery reliability and increased utilization of trucks. Pricing models and relative negotiation power between actors have a large effect on how the value is distributed. The main contributors to creating increased value are sufficient delivery volume, compatible processes, and full utilization of trucks. The possibility to use off-peak deliveries for marketing is relatively unexploited and could potentially create more value.

    This Master Thesis work was done at the Master’s Programme in SustainableTechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in study period 2005-2006.The aim of this Thesis work was to analyze if fermentation process is a proper methodfor processing organic waste from juice production process and if so to design a fermentationprocess of organic waste from juice plants in Uzbekistan taking into account the economical,environmental and technical aspects.In this report apple juice producing process and organic waste from juice productionin Uzbekistan were overviewed. Two juice processing plants of Uzbekistan “Bagat-Sharbat”and “Meva” and their generated organic waste were overviewed.Also different treatment methods of organic waste and their advantages anddisadvantages were analyzed and compared with anaerobic fermentation process. The studiedorganic waste management methods are animal feeding, incineration, direct land spreading,land filling, composting and anaerobic fermentation. Anaerobic fermentation of organic wastegenerated from fruit juice production was studied.Suggestions and recommendations were done to implement organic wastemanagement for fruit juice industry in Uzbekistan according to studies and calculations.Advantages and disadvantages of different waste management methods are discussedand compared with anaerobic fermentation. Economical and environmental calculations ofanaerobic fermentation process were done. Different biogas plant types all over the world andtheir construction costs were studied and compared. According to studies and calculationsseveral suggestions and recommendations are made.By studying and comparing different waste treatment methods with anaerobic digestion oforganic waste from juice plants following conclusions are made:

    The benefits of the biogas plant on the fruit juice plant:

    • Solution of the organic waste-disposal problems

    • Reduction of obnoxious smells from the organic wastes

    • Own, stable, self-sufficient energy production (heat, steam and electricity)

    • Cheap energy, which yields financial savings in the longer term.

    • Possibility of selling energy or biogas surplus - a source of extra income forthe plant.

    • Production of high-volume fertiliser that carries a higher content of nitrogen(15% or more) than artificial fertilisers, and that does not burn the crops, asuntreated slurry can do. This reduces the need for expensive artificialfertilisers. By selling this natural fertiliser additional income for the plant canbe obtained.

    Local benefits:

    • Better control of the waste from fruit juice processing organic waste meansless pollution of local environment and water sources.

    • Removal of chemical fertilisers from the fields and recirculation of nutrients.

    • Local power plants contribute to creating permanent local jobs in the area.

    On a global additional, replacing fossil fuels to biogas reduces emissions of CO2. Atthe same time, the emission of methane, a greenhouse gas that is 20 times more aggressivethan CO2 is reduced due to controlled anaerobic digestion.

    This paper deals with a multimodal annotation scheme dedicated to the study of gestures in interpersonal communication, with particular regard to the role played by multimodal expressions for feedback, turn management and sequencing. The scheme has been developed under the framework of the MUMIN network and tested on the analysis of multimodal behaviour in short video clips in Swedish, Finnish and Danish. The preliminary results obtained in these studies show that the reliability of the categories defined in the scheme is acceptable, and that the scheme as a whole constitutes a versatile analysis tool for the study of multimodal communication behaviour.

    Traditional sales systems have been disrupted by technological developments. In order to  adapt, companies are changing the way they interact with their customers in business-to-business markets. In the last three decades, multi-channel strategies have spurred the proliferation of different sales channels and new ways of managing sales systems. The purpose of this research was to investigate what should be considered when managing multi-channel sales systems with the objective of increasing sales efficiency. The study has investigated current utilisation of multi-channel sales systems in the context of a business-to-business setting in industrial companies that are involved in the Swedish automotive industry. Multi-channel sales systems can be utilised to achieve many different objectives. However, this research pays specific attention on how to improve sales efficiency by utilising multi-channel sales systems in the context of a business-to-business setting. The research employed an explorative case study, where semi-structured and structured interviews were conducted at a case company and at companies that are first or second tier suppliers in the Swedish automotive industry. The qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis. The empirical findings indicate that the most prevalent measure for increasing sales efficiency is to prioritise and allocate customers based on economic attractiveness. Furthermore, the key issues that impede sales efficiency in multi-channels sales system are misaligned sales activities, deficient prioritisation procedures, insufficient promotion of customer value and inadequate focus on customers. The findings highlight key areas to address and may provide guidelines for the design and management of multi-channel sales systems with the specific purpose of obtaining sales efficiency. The implications of this research are mainly practical and are aimed at supporting sales managers, or individuals in similar positions engaged in multi-channel sales system design and management, in obtaining sales efficiency. Managers should focus on aligning sales activities across the whole  sales system, allocate customers according to prioritisation and stay in line with market developments by understanding customer behaviours and perceptions.

    The costs of information technology (IT) in large multinational companies (MNCs) often constitute a significant portion of the company’s total yearly turnover. IT departments are on one hand expected to return value to business, but are on the other hand often prone to cost reductions. Thus, it is not unusual that IT management chooses to focus on cost cutting rather than cost control in order to meet the company’s financial targets. Understanding cost drivers in IT is not always evident, making it difficult for managers to know what performance indicators that should be tracked. This study addresses the issue of cost control and performance measurement in IT departments, in the form of a case study carried out at the IT department of a large Swedish MNC in the telecommunications industry. The case company is divided into two parts: Enterprise and Engineering, where Enterprise provides the organization with IT in form of printers, personal computers, applications, IT support and communication services through network infrastructure and voice. Engineering provides research and development units with software development infrastructure and testing environments for products. The testing environments comprise of both software testing through simulations and hardware testing in physical labs. By carrying out interviews with managers and key people responsible for large budget items, 130 cost drivers were identified. After reducing recurring cost drivers and merging similar ones, the cost drivers were filtered according to quantifyability. In a second step, performance indicators were developed using the SMART model and then scored with respect to cost impact and ease of implementation. This resulted in a recommendation of 49 performance indicators to be tracked across the entire IT department. A sample of recommended performance indicators is total cost of wages / number of employees, number of virtualized servers / total number of servers and amount of video related traffic / total capacity of bandwidth. The ambition of this study is to provide a holistic way of controlling cost drivers through prioritized performance indicators. Even though this case is specific to an IT department, the approach in this research may well be applied in other departments and industries.
