    Abstract [en]

    Presents a hybrid system: a neural network for data compression and a generic algorithm for sound synthesis. The goal is the reduction of the number of parameters associated with a sound. Because of the growth of electronic technology, actual synthesisers are very complex systems in which the user cannot move without difficulty, and expensive loss of time. The basic ideas are reduction of the parameters made by the neural network (NN), and the freedom to choose any algorithm for sound synthesis. For example, using a machine based on FM synthesis, one can change a subset of the proper FM parameters, while in a sample-based keyboard one can change the gain value, some envelope parameters, etc. Such a system is very easy to use, flexible, and requires only a little more hardware for its realisation in an electronic synthesiser. The major work is for the developer, but this is made only once. The user just moves some controllers, i.e. some sliders; the neural network computes the output which is the set of the parameters for the synthesiser

    Abstract [en]

    A system for real-time feedback of expressive music performance is presented.The feedback is provided by using a graphical interface where acoustic cues arepresented in an intuitive fashion. The graphical interface presents on the computerscreen a three-dimensional object with continuously changing shape, size,position, and colour. Some of the acoustic cues were associated with the shape ofthe object, others with its position. For instance, articulation was associated withshape, staccato corresponded to an angular shape and legato to a rounded shape.The emotional expression resulting from the combination of cues was mapped interms of the colour of the object (e.g., sadness/blue). To determine which colourswere most suitable for respective emotion, a test was run. Subjects rated how welleach of 8 colours corresponds to each of 12 music performances expressingdifferent emotions.

    Abstract [en]

    The representation of expressivity in music is still a fairlyunexplored field. Alternative ways of representing musicalinformation are necessary when providing feedback onemotion expression in music such as in real-time tools formusic education, or in the display of large music databases.One possible solution could be a graphical non-verbal representationof expressivity in music performance using coloras index of emotion. To determine which colors aremost suitable for an emotional expression, a test was run.Subjects rated how well each of 8 colors and their 3 nuancescorresponds to each of 12 music performances expressingdifferent emotions. Performances were playedby professional musicians with 3 instruments, saxophone,guitar, and piano. Results show that subjects associateddifferent hues to different emotions. Also, dark colorswere associated to music in minor tonality and light colorsto music in major tonality. Correspondence betweenspectrum energy and color hue are preliminary discussed.

    Abstract [en]

     In this paper we present a string-based, interactive, largescale installation for a new museum dedicated to performing arts, Scenkonstmuseet, which will be inaugurated in 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden. The installation will occupy an entire room that measures 10x5 meters. We aim to create a digital musical instrument (DMI) that facilitates intuitive musical interaction, thereby enabling visitors to quickly start creating music either alone or together. The interface should be able to serve as a pedagogical tool; visitors should be able to learn about concepts related to music and music making by interacting with the DMI. Since the lifespan of the installation will be approximately five years, one main concern is to create an experience that will encourage visitors to return to the museum for continued instrument exploration. In other words, the DMI should be designed to facilitate long-term engagement. Finally, an important aspect in the design of the installation is that the DMI should be accessible and provide a rich experience for all museum visitors, regardless of age or abilities.

    Images with nanoscale resolution were obtained in both transmission and reflection modes using a full-field microscope that is illuminated by an extremely compact λ = 46.9 nm (hv = 26.4 eV) soft x-ray laser. The microscope was used to image the surface of partially processed silicon semiconductor chips containing periodic patterns of polysilicon and metal lines. To characterize the microscope, modulation transfer functions were experimentally built for three different objective zone plates, and images with near-wavelength resolution were obtained.

    Recent advances in the development of high peak brightness table-top extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray (SRX) lasers have opened new opportunities for the demonstration of compact full-field EUV/SXR microscopes capable of capturing images with short exposures down to a single laser shot. We demonstrate the practical application of table-top zone plate EUV microscopes that can image nanostructures with a spatial resolution of 54 nm and below and exposure times as short as 1.2 ns, the duration of a single laser shot.

    Abstract [en]

    Swedish farmers are facing pressure from an international market and find it hard to differentiate their business when much is driven by large players in the value chain, both from the supplier and customer. The adoption and implementation of business model innovation practices can be an interesting alternative to those farmers to thrive this competitive and challenging environment. However, the implementation of business model innovation in the farming industry might face some challenges, due to the traditional and conservative character of the farm owners and managers. Thus, this study aims to understand the barriers to business model change in the perspective of the farmers in Skåne region, Sweden. As methodology, focus groups has been used with nine participating farmers where three of those farming companies has been selected as unit of analysis. In the focus group, they were first asked to define current business model by using business model canvas as a tool. Thereafter they used the business model canvas to improve the current business model and later were ask what barriers they could see in the process to improve their business model.

    The findings from the focus groups revealed many barriers that, according to the farmers, could challenge the implementation of changes in their current business model. Those are  mostly external barriers, which are hard to control (e.g. weather, governmental laws).  nother kind of external barrier is the position of farming in the whole value chain, at the very beginning. Relevant internal barriers were also identified, such as farming and farmers overall mind-set, traditions, low business knowledge and lack of knowledge about the end user. The results supports action research as a suitable way to work with business model innovation in the farming industry.

    PSD2 - A Catalyst for the Future of Retail Banking: Banks’ strategies to reach a competitive advantage from PSD2 in Sweden2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    The new EU regulation, revised payment services directive (PSD2), will change how the retail banking market works today. It will obligate banks, with the consumer’s consent, to provide access to account information and thus open up the market for new actors. This study aims to provide an understanding of the effects PSD2 will have on the retail banking market in Sweden and how the banks will act to cope with the changes it entails. There is a lack of academic articles on PSD2, and the reports that do exist are to the greater extent published by consultants. Hence, this report seeks to bridge that gap by exploring banks from a strategic point of view, taking a starting point in the theory of competitive advantage and open innovation, in order to analyse different banks’ strategies that they are considering when PSD2 is enforced. This will be a cornerstone for understanding the future development of the Swedish retail banking market. To gain in-depth knowledge about the banks’ strategies to cope with PSD2, a case study has been made where 10 semi-structured interviews have been conducted with 10 different banks operating in Sweden - this represents the greater majority of all banks in the Swedish retail banking market. From the empirical findings in this report, it is clear that very few banks consider that only complying to PSD2 is a good strategic alternative. Instead, most banks see greater business opportunities in PSD2 and from this study it is evident that the market is heading towards an open banking approach. However, the path towards open banking differs between banks. All banks will focus on becoming compliant but due to differences in size, capabilities and resources, the banks try to differentiate themselves through different approaches. Some banks will attempt an open banking approach immediately, while others will start by becoming a producer of services and from there decide whether or not to move into open banking. What has been made crystal clear from the analysis of the empirical findings, is that no banks will start off by becoming a distributor of more advanced customer data to third parties.

    Förväntan på att företag arbetar aktivt med att minska sin miljöpåverkan växer sig större för var dag. Med en miljöcertifiering kan företag visa sig ansvarsfulla inför sina intressenter och chanserna för en säkrad plats på framtidens marknad kan öka. Miljöcertifikat såsom ISO 14001-standarden inkluderar behovet av ständiga förbättringar av en organisations processer och miljöstrategiskt arbete. Begreppet ständiga förbättringar har sitt ursprung i Toyota Motors framgångsrika arbetssätt - kaizen - och innebär att allt kan göras lite bättre än i nuläget. På så sätt klingar det väl med miljöförbäattringsarbete eftersom vi fortfarande är på en resa mot det mest miljövänliga sättet att leva på.

    Två företag inom elinstallatörsbranchen har genom den webbaserade applikationen System C2 TM utmärkt sig i sitt arbete med ständiga förbättringar inom miljö. Eftersom en framgångsfaktor för ständiga förbättringar är utbildning kan det antas att dessa två företag har genomgått ett lärande som har lett till denna framgång, men vad som kännetecknat detta lärande är inte specificerat. Syftet med detta examensarbete är därför att undersöka vad en sådan utbildning bör innehålla för att inte bara leda till fler miljöförbättringar, utan även för att skapa förutsättningar för ett lärande inom ekologisk hållbar utveckling. För att generera kunskap kring detta genomfördes kvalitativa fokussamtal i två omgångar, med två  olika företag. Samtalen analyserades med hjälp av en tematisk analys. Resultaten visar att en utbildningsinsats som ämnar leda till ett aktivt miljöförbättringsarbete och ett kontinuerligt lärande ska sträcka sig över flera utbildningstillfällen. Tillfällena i insatsen bör ta vara på verksamhetens kunskap genom inklusion av medarbetare, knyta miljöfrågan till verksamheten, drivas av en engagerad ledning och ta vara på medarbetarnas personliga engagemang. Dessutom ställs krav på företagets kultur i form av att den ska vara öppen för ifrågasättande av rutiner samt drivas av en vilja att utvecklas. Resultaten visar även på likheter mellan konceptet ständiga förbättringar och lärande, och vidare föreslås djupare studier kring dessa likheter. Vidare forskning föreslås även i form av att testa de faktorer som detta examensarbete har resulterat i.

    This experimental study reports on the behavior of a filament attached to the rear of a three-dimensional cylinder. The axis of the cylinder is placed normal to a uniform incoming flow, and the filament is free to move in the cylinder wake. The mean position of the filament is studied as a function of the filament length L. It is found that for long (L/D > 6.5, where D is the cylinder diameter) and short (L/D < 2) filaments, the mean position of the filament tends to align with the incoming flow, whereas for intermediate filament lengths (2 < L/D < 6.5), the filament lies down on the cylinder and tends to align with the cylinder axis. The underlying mechanism of the bifurcations is discussed and related to buckling and inverted-pendulum-like instabilities.

    Som ett svar på att den svenska skolans matematikundervisning är i behov av ett lyft har denna studie utförts. Målet har varit att kunna uppvisa en idé gällande hur gymnasieskolans matematikundervisning kan individanpassas till följd av en utökad och mer riktad användning av exempellösningar. Detta har gjorts genom att en alternativ undervisningsmetod har införts i två klasser på en gymnasieskola i Stockholm, som sedan har genomfört matematikprov med och/eller utan den alternativa undervisningsmetoden. Utöver matematikprov har intervjuer och enkäter genomförts. Studiens resultat tyder på att elevernas prestation ökar vid inslag av en undervisning med exempellösningar. Vidare pekar undersökningen på att de elever som lyckas höja sina matematikresultat allra mest vid implementeringen av den imitativa undervisningen är de som i normala fall presterar allra svagast vid ordinarie undervisning. Studien visar även att elever ur olika kunskapsintervall uppskattar studerandet av de färdiga exempellösningarna, och finner sitt sätt på vilket de hanterar dem. Sammanfattningsvis åskådliggör detta arbete att färdiga exempellösningar med fördel kan användas som inslag i matematikundervisning vid exempelvis introduktion av nya procedurer eller teorier för att lättare och mindre tidskrävande kunna ge eleverna möjlighet till den stöttning de erfordrar.

Talent management is found to be important for modern organizations because of the advent of the knowledge economy, new generations entering the workforce and the need for businesses to become more strategic and competitive, which implies new ways of managing human capital. Furthermore, talent management is motivated by the fact that it has been found to lead to higher corporate profits when it is connected to the corporate strategy. The research method in this thesis is qualitative, and based on a case study of an organization in Norway active in the oil and gas industry, where qualitative semi-structured interviews have been performed. Moreover, the findings are compared to a set of industrial companies located in Sweden, which are similar in size to the case company and have similar needs for technical competence. The analysis of the empirical material in conjunction with the literature leads to our suggestions that there is a need for connecting the HRM practices with the corporate strategy, that the career concept needs to be redefined, and that talent management needs to integrate HR practices. Furthermore, communities of practice are suggested as a tool for developing technical specialists and rewarding them in their work. To guide organizations in executing talent management, we propose a model based in the strategy of the firm.

    Digitization poses a threat to the fundamental rights of individuals' personal sphere. This is due to deficiency within the current bylaws to protect data subjects' privacy and the lack of social codes for handling privacy in the virtual space. Colossal amount of implicit data processing, takes away data subject's control over their personal data. In order to protect data subjects from this treacherous relationship, between stakeholders and data subjects, the European Union has issued the new General Data Protection Regulation that was enforced in May 2018. Companies operating within EU thereby face substantive legislative reform in data protection. However, there are no current guidelines for how to acclimatize to the new regulation of processing personal data, especially for subsidiary companies. This study therefore addresses this gap by detailing the design process of attaining GDPR compliance for a subsidiary news service application. From this process, nine key tension points were identified and reformulated into five design guidelines more broadly applicable to design for privacy. In addition, two boundary objects and a transparency-layer strategy were formulated.

    Mature organizations must find ways to constantly innovate, if they want to survive or succeed in an ever competing manufacturing industry. One way to gain advantage over the competition is to work proactively in order to avoid contingencies. Contingencies are defined as unforeseen events with negative connotation that might occur, which by anticipating them it in time, the organization can avoid major disasters. There are two ways to approach contingency, reactively, where the organization tries to cope with the already done damage or proactively, where the organization works toward preventing incidents to happen.

    The thesis research performs an investigation on three temporary teams, introduced in a mature organization in the manufacturing industry, which work proactively towards avoiding contingencies. This type of team is not developed broadly in the academic literature, therefore it became the goal of this study to highlight the characteristics of this sort of temporary teams by means of a case study, to analyze them and to define them theoretically. By defining this type of team, the thesis will provide a deeper understanding about this empirical phenomenon and will fill a gap in the academic literature of groups in organizations.

    Teknikämnet i grundskolans senare år är ett ämne som möter många problem. Ämnet har i sitt innehåll och syfte förändrats en hel del i och med de olika skolreformerna och idag (2018) saknar över hälften av de verksamma lärarna ämnesbehörighet. Det finns behov av att underlätta för dessa obehöriga lärare och hjälpa dem att lättare planera tekniklektioner för att därmed underlätta elevernas lärande.

    Med utgångspunkten att en viktig aspekt för lärande är att kunna knyta an vardagskunskaper till akademiska kunskaper, ämnade denna undersökning att analysera vilken teknikdiskurs högstadieelever kan få utanför skolan. Denna teknikdiskurs jämfördes sedan med de teknikdiskurser som finns i skolans värld, med syftet att kunskap om teknikdiskurser utanför skolans värld kan stötta lärares planering av teknikämnet.

    För att ta reda på var elever möter teknikdiskurser under sin fritid, använde sig denna undersökning av videodelningsplattformen Youtube. I stort sett alla svenska ungdomar mellan 12-15 år använder Youtube, och 86 % av dem använder den varje dag. Vid olika svenska prisutdelningar vann den svenska Youtubern och Influencern Therese Lindgren titlar som Årets Youtuber och Barnens favoritvloggar. Även Therese Lindgrens Youtubeserie, ”Therese testar teknik”, vann pris som årets serie. Detta pekar mot att Therese Lindgren och hennes serie ”Therese testar teknik”, är populär bland ungdomar och kan påverka deras syn på teknik.

    Ett urval av avsnitten av serien ”Therese testar teknik” valdes ut för analys för att ta reda på vilken teknikdiskurs som fanns representerade i dessa videor och hur de förhöll sig gentemot den diskurs som finns i skolans värld. Resultatet visade att videorna presenterade teknik på ett jämförbart sätt med skolan. Videorna motsatte sig inte skolans bild av teknik, men diskurserna hade olika fokus. Teknik i videorna representerades som artefakter och system av artefakter som användes i en aktivitet för att lösa ett problem eller en uppgift, som påverkades av naturvetenskap och påverkade samhället.

    Förutom de diskurser som kunde jämföras med skolan, förmedlar videorna även känslor kring teknik, genom Thereses icke-verbala handlingar. Therese förmedlar teknik som roligt, spännande och exalterande, något som kan påverka ungdomars egna inställningar till teknikämnet.

    To study future communication needs between pedestrians and shared automated vehicles (SAVs), an interface that communicates the intentions of SAVs to pedestrians was designed and implemented in a virtual reality (VR) environment. This enabled the exploration of behaviors and experiences of 34 pedestrians when encountering SAVs, both with and without the interface, in several street crossing situations. All pedestrians assessed the level of perceived safety and comfort directly after each encounter with the SAV. The results show that the pedestrians’ level of perceived safety and comfort is higher in encounters with the interface than in encounters without the interface. This may have a positive influence on the acceptance of SAVs, and implies that future SAVs may gain from this, or similar interface.

    This paper describes a prototype of a computer-assisted pronunciation training system called MySpeech. The interface of the MySpeech system is web-based and it currently enables users to practice pronunciation by listening to speech spoken by native speakers and tuning their speech production to correct any mispronunciations detected by the system. This practice exercise is facilitated in different topics and difficulty levels. An experiment was conducted in this work that combines the MySpeech service with the WebWOZ Wizard-of-Oz platform (http://www.webwoz.com), in order to improve the human-computer interaction (HCI) of the service and the feedback that it provides to the user. The employed Wizard-of-Oz method enables a human (who acts as a wizard) to give feedback to the practising user, while the user is not aware that there is another person involved in the communication. This experiment permitted to quickly test an HCI model before its implementation on the MySpeech system. It also allowed to collect input data from the wizard that can be used to improve the proposed model. Another outcome of the experiment was the preliminary evalua- tion of the pronunciation learning service in terms of user satisfaction, which would be difficult to conduct before integrating the HCI part.

    Abstract [en]

    During invasion, cells breach basement membrane (BM) barriers with actin-rich protrusions. It remains unclear, however, whether actin polymerization applies pushing forces to help break through BM, or whether actin filaments play a passive role as scaffolding for targeting invasive machinery. Here, using the developmental event of anchor cell (AC) invasion in Caenorhabditis elegans, we observe that the AC deforms the BM and underlying tissue just before invasion, exerting forces in the tens of nanonewtons range. Deformation is driven by actin polymerization nucleated by the Arp2/3 complex and its activators, whereas formins and cross-inkers are dispensable. Delays in invasion upon actin regulator loss are not caused by defects in AC polarity, trafficking, or secretion, as appropriate markers are correctly localized in the AC even when actin is reduced and invasion is disrupted. Overall force production emerges from this study as one of the main tools that invading cells use to promote BM disruption in C. elegans.

    This paper gives an overview of the UCD Blizzard Challenge 2011 entry. The entry is a unit selection synthesiser that uses hidden Markov models for prosodic modelling. The evaluation consisted of synthesising 2213 sentences from a high quality 15 hour dataset provided by Lessac Technologies. Results are analysed within the context of other systems and the future work for the system is discussed.

    The optical, electrical and structural properties of thin. film tin oxide (TO), F-doped tin oxide (FTO; n(F) approximate to 6 x 10(20) cm (3)) and highly F-doped tin oxide (hFTO; n(F) approximate to 10 x 10(20) cm (3)), grown by spray pyrolysis technique, are studied by atomic force microscopy, Hall effect, X-ray. fluorescence and transmission/reflection measurements. The resistivity (rho = 32 x 10 (4) Omega cm for intrinsic tin oxide) shows intriguing characteristics when F concentration n(F) is increased (rho = 6 x 10 (4) Omega cm for FTO but 25 x 10 (4) Omega cm for hFTO) whereas the carrier concentration is almost constant at high F concentration (n(c) approximate to 6 x 10(20) cm (3) for FTO and hFTO). Thus, F seems to act both as a donor and a compensating acceptor in hFTO. The high carrier concentration has a strong effect on the optical band-edge absorption. Whereas intrinsic TO has room-temperature band-gap energy of E-g approximate to 3.2 eV with an onset to absorption at about 3.8 eV, the highly doped FTO and hFTO samples show relatively strong absorption at 2-3 eV. Theoretical analysis based on density functional calculations of FTO reveals that this is not a defect state within the band-gap region, but instead a consequence of a hybridization of the F donor states with the host conduction band in combination with a band. filling of the lowest conduction band by the free carriers. This allows photon-assisted inter-conduction band transitions of the free electrons to energetically higher and empty conduction bands, producing the below-gap absorption peak.

    The optical properties of intrinsic SnO2 (TO) and fluorine doped (FTO) are characterized in terms of the dielectric function epsilon(h omega) = epsilon(1) (h omega) + i epsilon(2)(h omega) by electronic structure calculations. The intrinsic TO shows intriguing absorption characteristics in the 3.0-8.0 eV region: (i) the low energy region of the fundamental band gap (3.2<h omega<3.9 eV), the optical transitions Gamma(+)(3) -> Gamma(+)(1) (valence-band maximum to conduction-band minimum) is symmetry forbidden, and the band-edge absorption is therefore extremely weak. (ii) In the higher energy region (3.9<h omega<5.1 eV) the Gamma(-)(5) -> Gamma(+)(1), transitions (from the second uppermost valence band) is strongly polarized perpendicular to the main c axis. (iii) Transitions with polarization axis parallel to c axis are generated from Gamma(-)(2) -> Gamma(+)(1) transitions (from the third uppermost valence bands), and dominates at high energies (5.1<h omega eV). Heavily F doped TO (FTO) with doping concentrations n(F) = 4 x 10(20) cm(-3) changes the absorption significantly: (iv) Substitutional F-O generates strong inter-conduction band absorption at 0.8, 2.2, and 3.8 eV which affects also the high frequency dielectric constant epsilon(infinity). (v) Interstitial F-i is inactive as a single dopant, but act as a compensating acceptor in highly n-type FTO. This explains the measured non-linear dependence of the resistivity with respect to F concentration.

    An Internet-based system for informing on multimodal travel planning (several modes of transportation) was introduced in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2000 in the form of a web page called trafiken.nu. The web page has a historical value of being one of the first attempts in Europe, and possibly the world, at providing an ICT-based travel planning service geared towards facilitating sustainable travel to the general public. The aim of this article is to investigate the historical development of trafiken.nu in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service with a potential for facilitating sustainable travel planning. Findings from the study of trafiken.nu suggest that the organizations behind the service have been slow in adapting to shifting media technology practices on how to provide for information which has affected the uptake of the service. Lessons from the case study provide a basis for arguing that organizations attempting to implement public information services would benefit from finding a means of harnessing collective intelligence in order to provide for a more customizable and responsive service to the general public.

    Abstract [en]

    Financial advisory services currently face many challenges such as adapting to regulations, competing against robot advisors and offering qualitative advice. We use a utility function based on the clients' risk preferences and investigated the value added by advisory services. The data represents real clients that received financial advisory services from an advisory firm, which gives this thesis a unique accuracy. For the calculations we simulated outcomes of the portfolios and computed key values pertaining to the investors' financial positions. Our calculations show that investors on average gain corresponding 1.66 % per year in risk free return on their investments from advisory services. In addition, we show that the client's value of advisory service increased with respect to the investor's risk level and time horizon of investment.

    Utvecklare av musikinstrument och gränssnitt för skapande av musik har de senaste decennierna

    integrerat koncept från MDI (människa-datorinteraktion) i utvecklingen. Flertalet av dessa

    musikredskap är riktade till amatörmusiker som inte är bildade inom musikteori, och är därför

    konstruerade med enkelhet i fokus. Detta har medfört dimensionella begränsningar av den

    musikaliska friheten användaren har vid användning av dessa redskap.

    Studien syftar till att utveckla och utvärdera ett gränssnitt på klaviatur som uppmuntrar

    användaren att bättre nyttja sin egen kreativitet vid musicerande. Visualisering av musikskalor

    på klaviatur är ett försök av författarna till denna studie att kombinera enkelheten som

    förekommer i flertalet moderna musikredskap med det mindre begränsade upplägg som

    konventionella musikinstrument innehar.

    Studien omfattar en genomgång av publicerade artiklar och erkänd litteratur samt aktuella

    musikredskap som används vid musicerande. Ett användartest för utvärdering av ett

    prototypgränssnitt har utformats utifrån de inhämtade kunskaperna. Studien omfattar även ett

    öppet formulär i samband med användartesten där försökspersonerna uppmanades att framföra

    subjektiva åsikter om hur gränssnittet påverkat dem.

    Resultaten från användartesten visar att det förekommer färre felspelade toner och färre

    omspelningar vid användandet av en klaviatur med visualiserad musikskala. Samtidigt visar

    resultaten att det kan förekomma fler saknade toner vid användandet av gränssnittet. Dock hade

    dessa uteblivna toner marginell inverkan på det subjektiva resultatet. Slutsatsen av studien är att

    ett gränssnitt för visualisering av musikskalor på klaviaturen frambringar fler fördelar än

    nackdelar på amatörmusikers musicerande. Vidare kan dessa nackdelar anses försumbara i

    förhållande till de fördelar som uppstår vid användning av gränssnittet.

    Together with electrification of the transportation sector and the introduction of renewable energy in the electricity grid, the demand for lithium-ion batteries is increasing. As a result of this emerging need, large-scale battery manufacturing is a promising and developing industry. Currently, there exist a challenge for lithium-ion battery manufacturers to ensure supply of the desired material and to guarantee operation in a sustainable manner. The material included in a battery cell possess unique characteristics, has high criticality, and experience limited availability, which has resulted in an un- certain business environment with high complexity. Hence, the aim of this thesis is to investigate how unique material characteristics affect the purchasing environment and can be considered to obtain a sustainable inbound supply chain for lithium-ion battery manufacturers. The study is based on the following research question; How can purchasing of critical direct material for lithium-ion battery manufacturers support a sustainable inbound supply chain?

    Unsupervised Representation Learning with Clustering in Deep Convolutional Networks2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis tackles the problem of unsupervised learning of visual representations with deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). This is one of the main actual challenges in image recognition to close the gap between unsupervised and supervised representation learning. We propose a novel and simple way of training CNN on fully unlabeled datasets. Our method jointly optimizes a grouping of the representations and trains a CNN using the groups as supervision. We evaluate the models trained with our method on standard transfer learning experiments from the literature. We find out that our method outperforms all self-supervised and unsupervised state-of-the-art approaches. More importantly, our method outperforms those methods even when the unsupervised training set is not ImageNet but an arbitrary subset of images from Flickr.

    The feasibility of the optical and electrical detection of dust-impact ionization events in the scrape-off layers of tokamak plasmas is evaluated. It is shown that the expected light emission and the charge released during a dust impact on a biased target can be measured above the light emission and the charge collected due to the background plasma. A scheme of an electro-optical probe for diagnostics of fast dust particles is proposed.

    Abstract [en]

    Clear differences in turbulence intensity profiles in smooth, transitional and fully rough zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers are demonstrated, using the diagnostic plot introduced by Alfredsson, Segalini & Orlu (Phys. Fluids, vol. 23, 2011, p. 041702) u'/U versus U/U-e, where u' and U are the local (root mean square) fluctuating and mean velocities and U-e is the free stream velocity. A wide range of published data are considered and all zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers yield outer flow u'/U values that are roughly linearly related to U/U-e, just as for smooth walls, but with a significantly higher slope which is completely independent of the roughness morphology. The difference in slope is due largely to the influence of the roughness parameter (Delta U+ in the usual notation) and all the data can be fitted empirically by using a modified form of the scaling, dependent only on Delta U/U-e. The turbulence intensity, at a location in the outer layer where U/U-e is fixed, rises monotonically with increasing Delta U/U-e which, however, remains of O(1) for all possible zero-pressure-gradient rough-wall boundary layers even at the highest Reynolds numbers. A measurement of intensity at a point in the outer region of the boundary layer can provide an indication of whether the surface is aerodynamically fully rough, without having to determine the surface stress or effective roughness height. Discussion of the implication for smooth/rough flow universality of differences in outer-layer mean velocity wake strength is included.

    Abstract [en]

    There are several tools for creating online surveys. However, guidance is lacking for some of the decision-making regarding the survey design. This study aims to investigate if one of these choices, navigation, has an impact on the surveys completion rate. We developed our own tool that gave every other respondent one of two different designs. This lets us gather more information than tools such as Google Forms and SurveyMonkey.

    A qualitative approach was used and we let the students of a course at KTH answer questions about that course without having knowledge of this project.

    No conclusions could be made due to some unexpected behaviours which will be explained later in this paper.
