    Abstract [en]

    A numerical model for amplification of ultrashort pulses with high repetition rates in fiber amplifiers is presented. The pulse propagation is modeled by jointly solving the steady-state rate equations and the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which allows accurate treatment of nonlinear and dispersive effects whilst considering arbitrary spatial and spectral gain dependencies. Comparison of data acquired by using the developed model and experimental results prove to be in good agreement.

    Abstract [en]

    The temporal evolution of in situ second-harmonic generation was employed to study domain dynamics during periodic poling in Rb-doped KTP. With this method we investigated the influence of various poling parameters, including electric-field pulse shape, pulse magnitude, and number of pulses, on the quality of the QPM structure. It was found that the grating formation can be a sub-millisecond process and the benefits of using symmetric triangular electric-field pulse shape over square pulse shape in the single-pulse poling regime were demonstrated. Multiple-pulse poling with triangular pulses was shown to have a detrimental effect on the QPM structure quality, while multiple square pulses can provide additional flexibility to the structuring process.

    We report the first experimental validation of angular quasi-phase-matching (AQPM) theory in a biaxial crystal by performing second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the periodically-poled Rb-doped KTiOPO4 (PPRKTP) crystal cut as a sphere. Both AQPM and birefringence phase-matching (BPM) angles were measured thanks to a Kappa circle.

    This paper demonstrates a self-starting mode-locked fiber laser that incorporates anelectrooptical fiber modulator and exploits soliton compression for picosecond pulsegeneration. The ring laser runs at 1.3 MHz, the pulse duration is ~2 ps and thebandwidth ~1 nm. The laser cavity is all fiber-based and the fiber modulator stabilizespulse formation.

    This work demonstrates an actively mode-locked fiber laser operating in soliton regime and employing an all-fiber electro-optic modulator. Nonlinear polarization rotation is utilized for femtosecond pulse generation. Stable operation of the all-fiber ring laser is readily achieved at a fundamental repetition rate of 2.6 MHz and produces 460 fs pulses with a spectral bandwidth of 5.3 nm.

    We propose a model for the poling-inhibiting action of proton-exchange, associated to nonuniform fields induced in the crystal by the vanishing of ferroelectricity in the beta-phase of HxLi1-xNbO3. Predictions are corroborated by experimental results on the poling of 0.5 mm thick congruent LiNbO3 substrates with periods around 8 mu m, yielding regular bulk domain structures with aspect ratios as high as 250.

    Abstract [en]

    Lithium Niobate and its isomorphs (e.g. LiTaO3) is an artificial ferroelectric crystal belonging to the 3 m crystallografic group [1]. It is characterised by large pyroelectric, piezoelectric, acusto-optic, nonlinear and electro-optic coefficients features and is one of the key materials for the fabrication of integrated optical devices [2]. LiNbO3 is one of the most versatile and widely used material in photonics, with a broad range of applications ranging from acoustic-wave transducers and filters in mobile telephones, to optical modulators and wavelength converters in fibre telecommunication systems, to name just a few. Recent advances in linear and nonlinear microstructuring technologies on the LiNbO3 material platform, involving domain engineering by electric field poling techniques as well as ion-exchange processes and etching techniques, enable the fabrication of both linear and nonlinear photonic crystals as showed in Fig. 42.1.

    We employed a 9-mm long periodically-poled KTiOPO 4 (PPKTP) crystal with a domain inversion period of 37.8 ÎŒm in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to generate sub-nanosecond pulses around 2.8 ÎŒm. With a 1-cm long OPO cavity in a singly resonant configuration with double pass pumping the OPO threshold was 110 ÎŒJ at 1064 nm (1-ns pump pulses at 1064 nm). The maximum idler output energy reached 110 ÎŒJ (quantum conversion efficiency of 32.5%). The signal pulse duration (FWHM) was 0.72 ns and the estimated idler pulse duration was 0.76 ns. At room temperature the signal and idler wavelengths were at 1722 and 2786 nm.

    We employed a 9-mm long periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystal in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) to generate sub-nanosecond idler pulses around 2.8 mu m. With a 1-cm long OPO cavity in a singly resonant configuration and double pass pumping by 1-ns pulses at 1,064 nm, the maximum idler energy reached 110 mu J at 1 kHz. Pumping with 500 ps pulses at 1-10 kHz, resulted in an idler energy of similar to 50 mu J and the shortest pulse duration of similar to 250 ps, ever reported for an OPO. The corresponding quantum conversion efficiencies were 32.5 and 34.9 %, respectively.

    Abstract [en]

    We present results from studying the carrier dynamics in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum-dot saturable absorbers intended for mode-locking of solid-state lasers. Four samples are examined, featuring controlled variations in the resonance condition of the electric field inside the absorber, the number of quantum-dot (QD) layers and the thickness of the GaAs barriers between these QD layers. Pump-probe experiments are conducted at a wide range of excitation fluences and reveal a fast relaxation component of the initial bleaching at low excitation fluences, while a slowly relaxing induced transparency becomes dominant at higher excitation fluences. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal a large and slowly relaxing induced transparency due to a capture of excess carriers from the barrier bands into the QDs and a slow radiative recombination there. The resonance condition as well as the thickness of the barriers between the QD layers can be used to control the relaxation behaviour. The fastest response is obtained in a structure with an increased number of QD layers at each individual anti-node of the electric field, which is attributed to the appearance of efficient non-radiative recombination channels and capture centres. These centres are probably related to dislocations and other defects appearing in thick QD stacks.

    Fundamental mode-locking is achieved in a 1.036 GHz cavity using a semiconductor quantum dot saturable absorber mirror with a fast relaxation time component of down to 550 fs. The dispersive cavity delivers 1.7 ps wide pulses with spectra supporting sub-picosecond pulse durations and an MA(2) of 1.3. An average output power of up to 339 mW at wavelengths around 1,032 nm is achieved and the saturable absorber's damage threshold is identified as a limitation for further power scaling.

    Abstract [en]

    Self-starting and stable mode-locking of an Yb:KYW laser in the picoseconds pulse regime has been achieved by exploiting a positive cascaded Kerr lens in periodically poled KTP. The use of a volume Bragg grating (VBG), for locking the output spectrum of the laser, was essential to achieve a stable mode-locked operation in this wide gain bandwidth laser material. The laser emitted stable, nearly transform-limited pulses with a duration of 16 ps, at a repetition rate of 210 MHz, and with an energy of 3.2 nJ. The mode-locked spectrum was centred at 1,029.1 nm and featured a FWHM bandwidth of 85 pm, which was effectively determined by the VBG. Combination of a large cascaded Kerr nonlinearity with spectral limiting by a VBG represents so far the best opportunity for stable mode-locking of a broadband laser to produce near-transform-limited picosecond pulses.

    Abstract [en]

    There is an ongoing development of THz sources for high-field applications, especially with the view of potential for THz-driven particle accelerators. For such sources nonlinear materials with high optical damage threshold and low loss are required. KTiOPO4, (KTP) is a well-established material for nonlinear optical applications in the visible and near-IR region thanks to its large transparency, high nonlinear coefficient and damage threshold. Its reasonably low absorption [1, 2] and strong coupling to phonon-polariton degree of freedom [1]. This shows promise for efficient IR to THz conversionprocess. Indeed,Wu et al.[2] recently demonstrated its superiority to LiNbO3and LiTaO3in a back to back experiment. In view of this, it is important to determinethe spectrum of complex refractive index over larger spectral range and with higher accuracy than has been do so far. KTP is an orthorhombic crystal belonging to mm2 point group with a rather complex vibrational mode structure containing 192 degrees of freedom. Earlier spectroscopic studies of KTP have either lacked the possibility of directly extracting the complex refractive index [3] or been limited by absorption of the transmitted signal due to the strong resonances of KTP, limiting the spectral extenttoabout 2.5 THz [4]. In this work we utilize reflection THz time-domain spectroscopy (TTDS) to determine the spectrum of the refractive index, n, and the absorption coefficient, , between 0.5 THz and up to 7 THz for two eigenpolarizations on the (001) plane.

    Terahertz (THz) radiation has been of increasing interest in the last decades, for security, manufacturing, quality control, medical and security imaging applications. The field requires more efficient and affordable sources and nonlinear upconversion schemes point in this direction. KTiOPO, (KTP) is a well-established material for nonlinear optical applications in the visible and near-IR region thanks to its large transparency, high nonlinear coefficient and damage threshold. Its reasonably low absorption [1, 2] and strong polariton resonances [1] show promise for efficient IR to THz upconversion and Wu et al. [2] recently demonstrated its superiority to LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 in a back to back experiment. However, the complex refractive index needs to be measured before further power scaling is realistic.

    We report on THz time-domain spectroscopy measurements of flux grown KTiOPO4 in the frequency range 0.6–7.0 THz (20 to 240 cm−1). Our results compare well with earlier Raman and far-infrared measurements. We theorize that the differences between the optical phonon mode resonances reported in the literature are due to what growth parameters and melt compositions are used to grow the crystals. We also report on a new feature at 1.4 THz (47 cm−1).

    This chapter aims first to guide the reader through the basic concepts which are encountered in the field of nonlinear optical materials and frequency conversion. The second aim is to show the historical developments in the area of nonlinear crystals and to expose the current status in this field. Due to remarkable progress in the development of quasi-phase-matched nonlinear media with associated numerous advantages for applications, the development focus is steadily shifting from synthesis of ever newer nonlinear crystals and towards demonstrations of structured or engineered media, as well as towards further improvement of the quality of the crystals used for fabricating such functional structures.

    Recent advances in the growth of ferroelectric crystals with low optical losses and good structural consistency in particular KTiOPO4 and stoichiomethic Mg:LiTaO3 allowed a vast extension of applicability of quasi-phase-matched frequency converters. In this paper we overview recent advances in structuring these materials enabling high-energy pulse generation, extremely broadband parametric gain, and some unique applications in the quasi phase-matched crystals containing submicron-periodicity 1D structures as well as in 2D-structured crystals.

    Picosecond SRS with single-pass efficiency exceeding 50% and 34 THz bandwidth was observed in KTiOPO4. At peak intensities above 10 GW/cm2 the SRS character changes from narrowband to broadband showing substantial "softening" of polariton modes.

    Abstract [en]

    High-efficiency picosecond stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) by phonon-polaritons has been observed in KTiOPO4 in a single pass through a 10 mm long crystal. For pulses longer than 10 ps, the SRS waves formed a symmetric pattern consisting of four distinct beams: SRS Stokes and anti-Stokes wavelengths originating both from the near-infrared pump and from the scattering of the second harmonic of the pump. At peak intensities above 10 GW/cm(2) and pulse length of 1.5 ps, the SRS character changes into what can be called runaway Raman scattering with efficiencies exceeding 50% and Raman gain spreading over 60 THz.

    Progress in structuring ferroelectric nonlinear materials with sub-micrometer periodicity domains for counter-propagating nonlinear interactions is overviewed. As an example of device realisation, the unique coherence properties of counter-propagating parametric interaction in such structures are dicussed.

    Abstract [en]

    In this work we present the development of the sub-micron ferroelectric domain structuring technology in KTiOPO4. We used these structures to demonstrate second-order interactions involving counter-propagating waves. Of special interest is the mirrorless optical parametric oscillator, where distributed feedback between the counter-propagating signal and idler waves obviates the need for mirrors, surface coatings or precise cavity alignment. Mirrorless optical parametric oscillator also demonstrates some unique and useful spectral properties. These experimental demonstrations are but first steps towards a number of tantalizing applications which, however, require even smaller ferroelectric domain periodicities and further work on the material structuring technology.
