    Social decisions about risk and risk-taking2007Inngår i: Social Choice and Welfare, ISSN 0176-1714, E-ISSN 1432-217X, Vol. 29, nr 4, s. 649-663Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There has been very little contact between risk studies and more general studies of social decision processes. It is argued that as a consequence of this, an oversimplified picture of social decision processes prevails in studies of risk. Tools from decision theory, welfare economics, and moral theory can be used to analyze the intricate inter-individual relationships that need to be treated in an adequate account of social decision-making about risk. However, this is not a matter of simple or straightforward application of existing theory. It is a challenging area for new theoretical developments.

    Abstract [en]

Specified meet contraction is the operation divided by defined by the identity K divided by p = K similar to f(p) where similar to is full meet contraction and f is a sentential selector, a function from sentences to sentences. With suitable conditions on the sentential selector, specified meet contraction coincides with the partial meet contractions that yield a finite-based contraction outcome if the original belief set is finite-based. In terms of cognitive realism, specified meet contraction has an advantage over partial meet contraction in that the selection mechanism operates on sentences rather than on temporary infinite structures (remainders) that are cognitively inaccessible. Specified meet contraction provides a versatile framework in which other types of contraction, such as severe withdrawal and base-generated contraction, can be expressed with suitably chosen properties of the sentential selector.

    Technology and the notion of sustainability2010Inngår i: Technology in society, ISSN 0160-791X, E-ISSN 1879-3274, Vol. 32, nr 4, s. 274-279Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Some of the difficulties connected with the concept of sustainable development can be resolved if we distinguish between sustainability of different types of assets, in particular between those that pertain to technological uses and those that do not. A weak concept of sustainability is appropriate for the former and a strong concept for the latter. Furthermore, time discounting is appropriate (in the relatively short run) for the former but not for the latter. It is concluded that instead of choosing between weak and strong sustainability, the two notions should be included in the same analysis, since they are needed to account for different kinds of assets.

    Abstract [en]

The paper introduces ten open problems in belief revision theory, related to the representation of the belief state, to different notions of degrees of belief, and to the nature of change operations. It is argued that these problems are all issues in philosophical logic, in the strong sense of requiring inputs from both logic and philosophy for their solution.

    The co-occurrence test for non-monotonic inference2016Inngår i: Artificial Intelligence, ISSN 0004-3702, E-ISSN 1872-7921, Vol. 234, s. 190-195Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

According to the co-occurrence test, q is (non-monotonically) inferrible from p if and only if q holds in all the reasonably plausible belief change outcomes in which p holds. A formal model is introduced that contains representations of both the co-occurrence test (for non-monotonic inference) and the Ramsey test (for conditionals). In this model, (non-nested) conditionals and non-monotonic inference satisfy the same logical principles. However, in spite of this similarity the two notions do not coincide. They should be carefully distinguished from each other.

    Abstract [en]

Ethicists have investigated ethical problems in other disciplines, but there has not been much discussion of the ethics of their own activities. Research in ethics has many ethical problems in common with other areas of research, and it also has problems of its own. The researcher’s integrity is more precarious than in most other disciplines, and therefore even stronger procedural checks are needed to protect it. The promotion of some standpoints in ethical issues may be socially harmful, and even our decisions as to which issues we label as “ethical” may have unintended and potentially harmful social consequences. It can be argued that ethicists have an obligation to make positive contributions to society, but the practical implications of such an obligation are not easily identified. This article provides an overview of ethical issues that arise in research into ethics and in the application of such research. It ends with a list of ten practical proposals for how these issues should be dealt with.

The Ethics of Making Patients Responsible2018Inngår i: Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, ISSN 0963-1801, E-ISSN 1469-2147, Vol. 27, nr 1, s. 87-92Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In their daily clinical work, healthcare professionals generally apply what seems to be a double standard for the responsibility of patients. On the one hand, patients are encouraged to take responsibility for lifestyle changes that can improve their chances of good health. On the other hand, when patients fail to follow such recommendations, they are not held responsible for the failure. This seeming inconsistency is explained in terms of the distinction between task responsibility and blame responsibility. The double standard for responsibility is shown to be epistemologically rational, ethically commendable, and therapeutically advantageous. However, this non-blaming approach to patient responsibility is threatened by proposals to assign lower priority in healthcare to patients who are themselves responsible for their disease. Such responsibility-based priority setting requires that physicians assign blame responsibility to their patients, a practice that would run into conflict with the ethical foundations of the patient-physician relationship. Therefore, such proposals should be rejected.

The Harmful Influence of Decision Theory on Ethics2010Inngår i: Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, ISSN 1386-2820, E-ISSN 1572-8447, Vol. 13, nr 5, s. 585-593Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the last half century, decision theory has had a deep influence on moral theory. Its impact has largely been beneficial. However, it has also given rise to some problems, two of which are discussed here. First, issues such as risk-taking and risk imposition have been left out of ethics since they are believed to belong to decision theory, and consequently the ethical aspects of these issues have not been treated in either discipline. Secondly, ethics has adopted the decision-theoretical idea that action-guidance has to be based on cause-effect or means-ends relationships between an individual action and its possible outcomes. This is problematic since the morally relevant connections between an action and future events are not fully covered by such relationships. In response to the first problem it is proposed that moral theory should deal directly and extensively with issues such as risk-taking and risk imposition, thereby intruding unabashedly into the traditional territory of decision theory. As a partial response to the second problem it is proposed that moral theorizing should release itself from the decision-theoretical requirement that the moral status of an action has to be derivable from the consequences (or other properties) that are assignable to that action alone. In particular, the effects that an action can have in combination with other actions by the same or other agents are valid arguments in an action-guiding moral discourse, even if its contribution to these combined consequences cannot be isolated and evaluated separately.

    The modes of value (Decision theory)2001Inngår i: Philosophical Studies, ISSN 0031-8116, E-ISSN 1573-0883, Vol. 104, nr 1, s. 33-46Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Contrary to the received view, decision theory is not primarily devoted to instrumental (ends-to-means) reasoning. Instead, its major preoccupation is the derivation of ends from other ends. Given preferences over basic alternatives, it constructs preferences over alternatives that have been modified through the addition of value object modifiers (modes) that specify probability, uncertainty, distance in time etc. A typology of the decision-theoretical modes is offered. The modes do not have (even extrinsic) value, but they transform the value of objects to which they are applied. A rational agent's total set of preferences should be coherent, but from this it does not follow that her preferences over mode-containing objects have to be derivable from her preferences over mode-free objects.

    The Moral Oracle’s test2014Inngår i: Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, ISSN 1386-2820, E-ISSN 1572-8447, Vol. 17, nr 4, s. 643-651Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

When presented with a situation involving an agent's choice between alternative actions, a moral oracle says what the agent is allowed to do. The oracle bases her advice on some moral theory, but the nature of that theory is not known by us. The moral oracle's test consists in determining whether a series of questions to the oracle can be so constructed that her answers will reveal which of two given types of theories she adheres to. The test can be applied to moral theories in order to determine if they differ in their recommendations for action. Based on this test, a terminology is developed to specify different forms and degrees of distinguishability between moral theories, or types of theories, in terms of their recommendations for action. In conclusion, the test is applied to consequentialism and utilitarianism.

Three Approaches to Finitude in Belief Change2007Inngår i: Hommage à Wlodek: Philosophical Papers Dedicated to Wlodek Rabinowicz / [ed] Toni Rønnow-Rasmussen, Björn Petersson, Jonas Josefsson and Dan Egonsson, Lund, 2007Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Since neither a human mind nor a computer can deal directly with infinite structures, well-behaved models of belief change should operate exclusively on belief states that have a finite representation. Three ways to achieve this without resorting to a finite language are investigated: belief bases, specified meet contraction, and focused propositional extenders. Close connections are shown to hold between the three approaches.

    Three Bioethical Debates in Sweden2008Inngår i: Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, ISSN 0963-1801, E-ISSN 1469-2147, Vol. 17, s. 261-269Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Three of the bioethical issues recently discussed in Sweden appear to be particularly interesting also to an international audience. A new law allowing restrictive use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)/human leukocyte antigen (HLA) ("savior siblings") has been implemented, a new recommendation for the cessation of life-sustaining treatment has been issued, and the scope of individual responsibility for medical mistakes has been rather thoroughly discussed.

    Uncertainties in the knowledge society2002Inngår i: International Social Science Journal, ISSN 0020-8701, E-ISSN 1468-2451, Vol. 54, nr 1, s. 39-+Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Modern industrialised societies have been described both as knowledge societies and as risk societies. The article analyses the relations between the terms knowledge, information, data, uncertainty, ignorance, and risk, and discusses the sense in which a society can be characterised by one of them. The role of uncertainty and risk in modern society is further examined. An explanation is offered why it need not be contradictory to describe present-day societies as both knowledge societies and societies characterised by risk or uncertainty.

Uncertainty and the ethics of clinical trials2006Inngår i: Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics, ISSN 1386-7415, E-ISSN 1573-0980, Vol. 27, nr 2, s. 149-167Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A probabilistic explication is offered of equipoise and uncertainty in clinical trials. In order to be useful in the justification of clinical trials, equipoise has to be interpreted in terms of overlapping probability distributions of possible treatment outcomes, rather than point estimates representing expectation values. Uncertainty about treatment outcomes is shown to be a necessary but insufficient condition for the ethical defensibility of clinical trials. Additional requirements are proposed for the nature of that uncertainty. The indecisiveness of our criteria for cautious decision-making under uncertainty creates the leeway that makes clinical trials defensible.
