The potential techniques to realise optical fibre graphene sensors are presented and discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    An Al2O3 xerogel with a distinctive microstructure is studied for the application of laser absorption spectroscopy of oxygen. The xerogel has an exceptionally high porosity (up to 88%) and a large pore size (up to 3.6μm). Using the method of gas-in-scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS), a long optical path length (about 3.5m) and high enhancement factor (over 300 times) are achieved as the result of extremely strong multiple-scattering when the light is transmitted through the airfilled, hollow-sphere alumina xerogel. We investigate how the microphysical feature influences the optical property. As part of the optical sensing system, the material's gas exchange dynamics are also experimentally studied.

    A facile polymethyl methacrylate-assisted turnover-transfer approach is developed to fabricate uniform hexagonal gold nanobowl arrays. The bare array shows inferior light trapping ability compared to its inverted counterpart (a gold nanospherical shell array). Surprisingly, after being coated with a 60-nm thick amorphous silicon film, an anomalous light trapping enhancement is observed with a significantly enhanced average absorption (82%), while for the inverted nanostructure, the light trapping becomes greatly weakened with an average absorption of only 66%. Systematic experimental and theoretical results show that the main reason for the opposite light trapping behaviors lies in the top amorphous silicon coating, which plays an important role in mediating the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and the electric field distributions in both nanostructures.

    Abstract [en]

    In spite of great progress in the surface modification of semiconductor photoelectrodes, the role of the metal oxide cocatalyst on photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance is still not well understood. In this study, ferrihydrite (Fh) as a novel cocatalyst was decorated on a wormlike nanoporous BiVO4 photoanode. A surface kinetics study of Fh/BiVO4 by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) evidences the primary role of Fh on PEC performance enhancement, varying with the loading of Fh. It was found that dispersed Fh nanoparticles accelerate hole transfer for water oxidation, but the resulting photoanode suffers from poor stability. The thick layers of Fh address the stability of the electrode by suppressing surface charge recombination but result in reduced hole transfer rates. Modification of a BiVO4 film with optimally thick layers of discrete nanoflakes effectively reduces charge recombination without compromising stability, leading to a high AM 1.5 G photocurrent of 4.78 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode and an applied bias photon to current efficiency of 1.81% at 0.61 V. These values are comparable to the best results reported for undoped BiVO4. (Chemical Equation Presented).

    Good performance of a direct optical microwave filter combined with direct detection consisting of a single superimposed grating used in reflection has been assessed through bit-error-rate (BER) measurement. In the passband with a 3-dB bandwidth of 2 GHz, the BER is below 1.2 x 10(-11), showing nearly ON-OFF behavior of the filter.

    Abstract [en]

    A distributed-feedback (DFB) grating was written in twin-hole fibres with internal electrodes. Due to the intrinsic birefringence, the grating has two ultra-narrow peaks (∼0.41 pm and ∼0.27 pm) corresponding to x- and y-polarization. The separation between them can vary from 40 pm to 104 pm when the temperature increases from room temperature to 96°C. The dominant contributions of the Bragg wavelength shift as the increasing temperature are the change in refracitive index of the fibre and the expansion of the substrate (largest). Under the current pulses excitation, full on-off switching with response time ∼2.5 ns has been achieved for x-polarization of the DFB grating.

    Two functions normally attributed to Pockels cells are performed with internal-electrode microstructured fiber components. Single-pulse selection out of a 100 MHz mode-locked pulse train is demonstrated using all-fiber nanosecond polarization rotation. Additionally, off-on-off gating with duration similar to 13 ns is achieved with a polarization rotator made out of a four-hole silicate fiber.

    Abstract [en]

    A fiber Bragg grating was written in a side-hole fiber with internal metal alloy electrodes. The initial geometrical birefringence of this fiber gives rise to two Bragg resonances separated by 43 pm. Nanosecond risetime current pulses of up to 23 A were applied to the metal electrode, which heated and expanded rapidly. This caused mechanical stress in the fiber on a nanosecond scale, resulting in a negative shift of the Bragg wavelength peak for the fast axis mode, and positive but smaller shift for the slow axis mode. The fast change increased the peak separation to similar to 143 pm, corresponding to an increase in birefringence from 4.0 x 10(-5) to 1.3 x 10(-4). Both peaks subsequently experienced a red-shift due to the relaxation of mechanical stress and the increasing core temperature transferred from the metal in many microseconds. Simulations give accurate description of the experimental results.

    Mesoporous encapsulation of gold nanorods (GNRs) in a silica shell of controllable thickness (4.5-25.5 nm) was realized through a single-step coating method without any intermediary coating. The dependence of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) extinction spectra of the coated GNRs on the thickness of the silica shell was investigated with both simulation and experiments, which agreed well with each other. It was found that cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules, which act as surfactants for the GNRs and dissociate in the solution, greatly affect the silica coating. Mesoporous silica-encapsulated GNRs were also shown to be highly biocompatible and stable in bio-environments. Based on LSPR enhanced scattering, mesoporous silica-encapsulated GNRs were utilized for dark field scattering imaging of cancer cells. Biomolecule-conjugated mesoporous silica-encapsulated GNRs were specifically taken up by cancer cells in vitro, justifying their use as effective optical probes for early cancer diagnosis. Mesoporous silica can also be modified with functional groups and conjugated with certain biomolecules for specific labeling on mammalian cells as well as carrying drugs or biomolecules into biological cells.

    Abstract [en]

    The development of a highly active manganese-based water oxidation catalyst in the design of an ideal artificial photosynthetic device operating under neutral pH conditions remains a great challenge, due to the instability of pivotal Mn3+ intermediates. We report here defective and "c-disordered" layered manganese oxides (MnOx-300) formed on a fluorine-doped tin oxide electrode by constant anodic potential deposition and subsequent annealing, with a catalytic onset (0.25 mA/cm(2)) at an overpotential (eta) of 280 mV and a benchmark catalytic current density of 1.0 mA/cm(2) at an overpotential (eta) of 330 mV under neutral pH (1 M potassium phosphate). Steady current density above 8.2 mA/cm(2) was obtained during the electrolysis at 1.4 V versus the normal hydrogen electrode for 20 h. Insightful studies showed that the main contributing factors for the observed high activity of MnOx-300 are (i) a defective and randomly stacked layered structure, (ii) an increased degree of Jahn-Teller distorted Mn3+ in the MnO6 octahedral sheets, (iii) effective stabilization of Mn3+, (iv) a high surface area, and (v) improved electrical conductivity. These results demonstrate that manganese oxides as structural and functional models of an oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II are promising catalysts for water oxidation in addition to Ni/Co-based oxides/hydroxides.

    The concept of parity-time symmetry (PT symmetry) originates from the canonical quantum mechanics and has become a hot topic recently. As a versatile platform to investigate the intriguing concept, both theoretical and experimental works in optics have been implemented. In this paper, the PT symmetry breaking phenomenon is investigated in a coupled nanobeam cavity system. An exceptional point is observed during the tuning of the gain/loss level and the coupling strength of the closely placed nanobeam pair. Unidirectional light propagation is investigated, as well as enhanced sensitivity of single particle detection in the vicinity of the exceptional point. The proposed system is easy to be integrated with photonic integrated circuits and can be strongly coupled to optical waveguides.

    Abstract [en]

    An optical sensor based on differential absorption spectroscopy for real-time monitoring of industrial nitric oxide (NO) gas emission is described. The influence of gas absorption interference from sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the environment was considered and a spectral separation technique was developed in order to eliminate this interference effect. The absorption spectrum of SO2 around 226 nm was evaluated by the SO2 concentration obtained using the experimentally recorded absorption spectrum around 300 nm. The absorption spectrum of NO around 226 nm was obtained by subtracting the absorption of SO2 from the integral absorption spectrum of SO2 and NO. The concentration measurements were performed at atmospheric pressure. The technique was found to have a lower detection limit of 0.8 ppm for NO per meter path length (SNR=2) and be immune from the influence from SO2 on the NO measurement. The sensor based on this technique was successfully employed for in situ measurement of SO2 and NO concentrations in the flue gas emitted from an industrial coal-fired boiler.

    It is shown that there is no polarization-independent two-dimensionally (2D) omni-directional photonic band gap (PBG) for any conventional one-dimensional (1D) metal-dielectric (isotropic) structure. Through the study of band diagrams and some asymptotic analysis, a 1D periodic metal-dielectric (anisotropic) structure is proposed to achieve a polarization-independent 2D omni-directional PBG. Theoretical predictions for both the lossless and lossy cases are verified with finite element method (FEM) simulation of a point source in such a structure.

    The ability to control the scattering property of an object is important in many applications. In this paper, we propose and study the scattering characteristics of a circular array of split-ring resonators (SRRs). By calculating the scattered energy spectrum, we show that the proposed structure has a localized surface plasmon resonance like behavior, which makes it useful as a super scatterer. Furthermore, in a special case, the proposed structure exhibits transparency to the illuminated waves, i.e., it does not scatter any energy at all and thus acts as a zero electromagnetic scattering object.

    We introduce a thin multilayer-shell-coated gold nanorods (GNRs) that we have been able to achieve by way of coating them with two thin layers of small organic molecules in a new, efficient, effective, time-saving, and easy-to-control multilayer coating method. Compared to the thick shell, due to the small size of the coating molecules, this new type of GNR, by simply mixed with the sample solution, has shown that it can act as a highly effective and improved surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement agent without the need of any sample connecting or doping. This enhancement is found not only related to the off-resonance surface enhancement, but also to the increased signal-to-noise ratio brought by the low level of fluorescence emission. It showed excellent stability in strong acids, bases and some organic solvents as examined by comparing the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance peak values. A living body experiment on a tumor-bearing nude mouse injected with the Raman reporter dye loaded onto our new GNRs showed strong surface enhanced Raman scattering signal in the tumor, suggesting its high potential use in many related optical applications.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder, which has been associated with atypical neural synchronization. In this study, functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to study the differences in functional connectivity in bilateral inferior frontal cortices (IFC) and bilateral temporal cortices (TC) between ASD and typically developing (TD) children between 8 and 11 years of age. As the first report of fNIRS study on the resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) in children with ASD, ten children with ASD and ten TD children were recruited in this study for 8 minute resting state measurement. Compared to TD children, children with ASD showed reduced interhemispheric connectivity in TC. Children with ASD also showed significantly lower local connectivity in bilateral temporal cortices. In contrast to TD children, children with ASD did not show typical patterns of symmetry in functional connectivity in temporal cortex. These results support the feasibility of using the fNIRS method to assess atypical functional connectivity of cortical responses of ASD and its potential application in diagnosis.

    A simple and tunable single-hand pass microwave photonic filter of adjustable shape is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter is based on multiple sources (spectrum-sliced by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer) and two cascaded incoherent optical structures, namely, a dispersion medium of 50-km single-mode fiber and a fiber ring delay line. In the experimental range from 1.0 to 3.8 GHz, a discretely tunable single-hand pass filter with a high Q-factor or a flat-top response is achieved by carefully matching the transfer functions of the two individual optical structures.

    A hybrid method combining the three-dimensional (3D) beam propagation method (BPM) and a 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is presented for the simulation of multimode-interference (MMI) couplers based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowires. This hybrid method makes it possible to have a robust analysis for the reflection properties while avoiding a time-consumed computation with a simplex 3D-FDTD simulation. The reflected power is sensitive to both the length and the width of the MMI coupler and thus one should choose the optimal values for good self-imaging. Furthermore, the reflection could be reduced by introducing tapers between the MMI section and the access waveguides.

    A polarization-insensitive design of an echelle grating (or etched diffraction grating) demultiplexer based on silicon nanowires is proposed in the present letter, by introducing a polarization compensation area in its free propagation region. The polarization-dependent wavelength shift of the present device has been compensated at the whole spectral range. For a design with nine channels and 10-nm channel spacing, when the wavelength shift at the central channel 1550 nm is. completely compensated, the wavelength shifts of the two edge channels are only 0.14 and 0.15 nm, which are acceptable.

    Abstract [en]

    A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested. A two-dimensional photonic crystal with a triangle lattice of elliptic air cylinders, which are filled with the EIT atomic vapor, in the KAs background material is designed. By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable bandgap structure that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions (e.g. the intensity of the control field) . It is shown that a large complete bandgap of about 0.0503ωe in the region of high normalized frequency could be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the spontaneous decay rate, dephasing rate, Rabi frequency of control light, atomic number density as well as elliptic geometric parameters.
