    Energy Performance R-Value: Part 1 - Development of integrated evaluation methodology for building enclosures2008Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    As a result of global increase in environmental awareness and the strive for reduction in energy consumption, it is only natural to look towards buildings as areas that need significant improvement to meet the society demand on reducing the energy use. After all, buildings consume more energy than cars. Yet the procedures that are used to define the thermal performance of, for example a wall, are typically based on the test performed on dry materials, without consideration of air and moisture movements. With other words these tests represent arbitrary rating conditions because we know that energy performance of materials and building assemblies is affected by moisture and air flows.

    This paper, in part 1, explains why the traditional testing with calibrated boxes is limited to comparative measurements of heat flow and proposes testing procedure that through a series of steps bridges the gap between the currently used R-value and energy performance rating. In the second part of the paper, an integrated testing and modeling methodology is applied to interacting effects of heat, air and moisture flows.

    In this way, these two papers report a key part of a project sponsored by an industrial consortium that was aiming in the development of performance indicator that closer reflects the thermal performance of an assembly under service conditions. In doing so, the current R-value serves as a baseline to which Rvalues measured in later steps are compared. These steps include R-value measured under two levels of air infiltration and wetting by infiltration of warm, moist air followed by a subsequent drying.

    Abstract [sv]

    I rapporten undersöktes skillnaderna mellan Thermomur 350 och en träregelvägg. Thermomur 350 marknadsförs med att de inte kan få några fuktskador och saknar köldbryggor. En LCC-analys av totalkostnaden för husen utfördes för att se skillnaderna i pris för de två väggtyperna med avseende på fuktskador och köldbryggor, för att se hur material- och byggkostnader skiljer sig åt.

    För att få en bild av hur köldbryggor påverkar husen genomfördes energiberäkningar. Vi fick då fram att energibehovet skiljer sig med 0,6 kWh/m

    2 år, med fördel för träregelväggen.

    Resultatet visar att Thermomur 350 inte får några mögel eller rötskador eftersom den inte består av ett organiskt material. Därför sattes ingen kostnad för en fuktskada för Thermomur 350 i LCC-analysen. Av alla fuktskador som sker i ett hus sker endast 3 % i ytterväggarna, även om det är en liten procentsats togs beslutet att räkna med en fuktskada i träregelväggen, som sker om 25 år. När det kommer till byggkostnader drogs slutsatsen att Thermomur 350 är billigare i båda avseendena och att oavsett om en fuktskada skulle inträffa i träregelväggen är Thermomur 350 ett mer lönsamt alternativ vid val av ytterväggsmaterial.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we propose a method for assessing renovation packages drawn up with the goal of increasing energy efficiency. The method includes calculation of bought energy demand, life-cycle cost (LCC) analysis and assessment of the building according to the Swedish environmental rating tool Miljöbyggnad (MB). In this way the methodology assesses economic, indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and specifically environmental aspects associated with energy demand of such packages from a sustainability point-of-view. Through MB, energy efficiency packages are placed in context with other necessary measures required to improve environmental performance in buildings, providing a consistent and systematic basis other than simply financial performance by which to compare capital improvements. The method is further explained and analyzed by applying it in three case studies. In each case study a multi-family building representing a typologically significant class in the Swedish building stock is considered, and for each building a base case and two renovation packages with higher initial investment requirement and higher energy efficiency are defined. It is shown that higher efficiency packages can impact IEQ indicators both positively and negatively and that packages reducing energy demand by approx. 50% have somewhat higher LCC. Identified positive IEQ impacts point to added value for packages that may not otherwise be communicated, while negative impacts identify areas where packages need to be improved, or where MB indicators may be referred to as specifications in procurement procedures.

    The study aims to investigate the impact of industrialised homebuilding in the creation of the aesthetic

    properties of the dwelling architecture.

    The concepts of industrialised homebuilding and the aesthetic properties of the dwelling architecture are

    defined by previously developed models. In these models, industrialised homebuilding is described by

    eight characteristic areas. The aesthetic properties of the dwelling architecture are described by seven

    aesthetic qualities.

    The study was conducted as a qualitative study, and in-depth interviews were conducted. The company

    JM AB is the analysed unit that the author of this report has chosen to study. JM employees and by JMhired

    architects were interviewed.

    The report concludes that characteristic area planning and control of processes are considered to have

    positive impact on the aesthetic qualities if the process is designed in such a way that the creations of

    these are admitted. Whether the characteristic area design of standardized building systems and platform

    thinking has a positive or negative role in the creation of the aesthetic properties has not been able to be

    specified on the basis of the collected material. The characteristic area is, however, considered to have a

    major impact on the creation of the aesthetic properties. Characteristic area collaboration between

    stakeholders in the process is positive and important for the creation of the aesthetic properties.

    Characteristic area customer focus and emphasis on the early stages are beneficial for the creation of

    aesthetic properties, but disagreement exists about how best to focus on the customer. Characteristic area

    prefabrication of building components has a limited but positive impact on the creation of the aesthetic

    properties. Characteristic area integration of logistics in production and the characteristic area use of

    information and communication systems are not considered important to the creation of the aesthetic

    properties. Characteristic area active experience feedback and performance measurement has a positive

    impact on the aesthetic properties.

    Planning and control processes, design of standardized building systems, platform-thinking, customer

    focus and emphasis on the early stages are the characteristic areas considered to have the greatest impact

    on the creation of the aesthetic properties. The author recommends an in-depth study on each of these

    characteristic areas. The study aims to investigate the impact of industrialised homebuilding in the creation of the aesthetic

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis, input data for energy performance calculations on commercialpremises have been studied. In energy performance calculations, where internal heat gain parameters are unknown, template values that, in a reasonable way represent the activity in the room, are necessary. These values can be used as input data for whole-year calculations, or for calculations on shorter periods of time.

    The purpose of the Sveby project is to create standardized work practice in energy issues for the construction industry. The work in this thesis is conducted to correlate with the purpose of the Sveby project, with aims of contributing with information and guidelines for the continuing work with commercial premises.

    In this report, suggestions for template values for internal gains parameters, based on research and calculations in the field are presented. Suggestions on how these can be implemented in a user-friendly way for two energy performance calculation software are also given, VIP Energy and IDA ICE. This is done in a manner so that it will be easy for users of energy performance simulation software to calculate similarly with respect to internal gains parameters.

    Suggestions for template values for some types of non-residential buildings are presented individually in chapter 4, and tabled in appendix A.

    The results for this study show that the energy calculations software, available on the Swedish market today, has a high degree of detail in the input parameters. In the Sveby project, there is a need to precise how these parameters should be considered for standardized use. For example, the Sveby guideline does not specify how convective/radiant/latent differentiation should be handled in energy performance calculations. The differences in these parameters often have a limited effect on the results in whole-year simulations. This thesis shows that this 4 question should, however, be handled to clarify this issue due to the fact that the simulation software has these options in the user interface.

    A test of the template values have also been done, where a simple model has been built in IDA ICE and VIP Energy, which has been executed and analyzed for the purpose of, partly to demonstrate how the excel spreadsheet that has been created can be used in practice, and partly to investigate differences in calculation results between the different simulation software.

    The results show that the system that has been created to handle user related internal gains gave similar results for both calculation software. Some adjustment of the system is, however necessary to achieve an as similar result as possible in the different simulation software. This is extra relevant for the internal gains from occupants, due to the difference in calculation algorithms that are used by the different software.

    Abstract [en]

    Moisture induced damages to building envelopes can result in microbial growth possibly affecting the health and wellbeing of occupants. Recent failing structures and damaged buildings indicate a lack of tools to estimate risk of mould growth and moisture damage. In this work a so-called mould resistance design (MRD) model has been applied for mapping the risk for mould growth on a number of wood-containing wall structures. The MRD model introduces an engineering approach to moisture safety design in a similar way as for structural design, where load and resistance is compared. The MRD model introduces and quantifies the concepts of climatic exposure and material resistance and compares them through an MRD index. This MRD index incorporates a limit state, which gives the critical dose of exposure for a given resistance to initiate onset of mould growth.

     

    Three conceptual wall structures were evaluated and analyzed in terms of MRD index: two wall systems with an air gap and one wall system without. A parametric study investigating the effect of parameter variation on MRD index was conducted. Evaluated parameters were: climate (geographic location), orientation, air changes per hour in the air gap, driving rain penetrating the facade layer, exterior plaster properties and wood type. The simulations were performed using the hygrothermal calculation software WUFI. The results indicate that the wall systems with a ventilated air gap performs better in terms of MRD index i.e. suggests a lower risk of initiation of mould growth than the wall system without air gap. The results of orientation variation show that wall systems perform differently dependent on layering structure. The inherent water sorption properties of the exterior plaster are shown to have a large effect on the results. In addition, uncertainties were found on how to accurately include hydrophobicity as a parameter in the model. The report concludes that geographical location and its specific climate is the most important parameter to consider when designing for moisture safety. The MRD model is recommended to be used in combination with traditional moisture safety evaluation.

    Abstract [en]

    Discussions regarding apartment buildings built 1965-1975 during the ”Million Home Programme” are often focused on uniformity, unfortunate building technology and general poor condition. There is a common perception that the lessons learnt from the programme is that this type of building technology carries problems. The houses as such are thus inappropriate designs.

    This report has focused to investigate Järva area’s constitution of houses built during this period. The question this report has researched is whether the buildings aside from aesthetics also have uniform building technology within the respective building types.

    By implementing a control group and investigating drawings from initial construction, interviewing property owners in the area and researching historic building technology, a different conclusion can be drawn. Appendix A, attached at the end of this report, constitutes the investigation of building technology used in the control group. The investigation shows that, regardless though a lot of the building technology is shared, many of the buildings within the same category differ on detail solution level. The solutions that are often viewed as unfortunate are rather assessed as being so due to a lack of knowledge in required maintenance. Ongoing maintenance and renovation of the Järva area’s properties is also under way, but is limited by factors concerning financing. These renovations are however reportedly not made in order to fix previous unfortunate solutions, but rather to address the end of technical service life of the buildings various technical systems.

    Abstract [en]

    This study evaluated the capability of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology based on small portable magnets for in situ studies of the local moisture content in wood. Low-field and low-resolution [1H]NMR with a unilateral permanent magnet was used to monitor and map the moisture content of wood cladding materials of various types in a spatially resolved manner. The results show that portable NMR equipment based on small open-access permanent magnets can be successfully used for non-invasive monitoring of the moisture content in various extended wood specimens. The moisture content was measured with a depth resolution of 0.2 mm and a maximum penetration depth of 3 mm. This makes the technique suitable for in situ local moisture content measurements beneath a coating layer in the cladding, for example, and it is also possible to relate the moisture level to specific properties of the wood material.

    Byggnader med grundkonstruktioner under mark blir allt vanligare. Att bygga långt ner i marken innebär ofta att man måste handskas med det fluktuerande grundvattnet. Konstruktioners beständighet och livslängd beror många gånger på vattenbeständigheten. Det byggs en mängd olika betongkonstruktioner som är utsatta för ensidigt vattentryck. Kravet på vattentätheten varierar beroende på syfte och användning av byggnaden. Det kan för ett parkeringsdäck vara acceptabelt med vattenläckage medan det i kommersiella byggnader inte tillåts vatteninträngning överhuvudtaget.

    Denna uppsats utreder hur man fuktsäkrar husgrunder under grundvattenytan. Vattentätheten i grundkonstruktioner beror framförallt på tre faktorer. Det får inte existera breda genomgående sprickor i betongen. Gjutfogar och rörelsefogar bildar diskontinuiteter i grundkonstruktioner som måste tätas. Vidare måste anslutande element såsom fundament och pålar tätas. Hänsyn bör tas till faktorerna för att slippa läckage och att behöva efterbehandla grundkonstruktioner som innebär stora kostnader i förhållande till en tät byggnad från första början.

    Syftet med examensarbetet var att för svenska konstruktörer presentera hur man projekterar en fuktsäker grundkonstruktion under grundvattenytan. På uppdrag av Sweco har rapporten utrett de tekniker som finns, vad dessa har för egenskaper och begränsningar samt när dessa är lämpliga. Utredningen baseras på en omfattande litteraturstudie och en intervjustudie med involverade parter vid nybyggnation.

    Målet med rapporten var att presentera hur man framgångsrikt projekterar och bygger vattentäta betongkonstruktioner under grundvattenytan. Rapporten ska ge en överskådlig introduktion samt underlätta för de som eftersträvar ingående förståelse inom ämnet. Den riktar sig framförallt till projektörer men även övriga parter med en betydande roll skall kunna följa rapporten för en bättre förståelse och kännedom.

    Befintliga lösningar utvärderas genom en omfattande litteraturstudie och en kvalitativ intervjustudie med konstruktörer, entreprenörer och leverantörer av tätningstekniker. Samtliga aktörers kompetens och erfarenhet sammanfördes för att identifiera förbättringspotentialen i projektering- och produktionsfasen av vattentäta grundkonstruktioner. Kompetensen finns i branschen men återkopplingen och feedbacken är synnerligen begränsad. Åsikter och kunnigheter är utspridda mellan många källor vilket gör att en enhetlig bild saknas.

    Sammanfattningsvis visar studien dels att man som konsult tillsammans med entreprenör bör göra en ny risk- och konsekvensanalys inför varje projekt. Olika tätningsalternativ bör övervägas för att medvetandegöra varje parts del av riskhanteringen. Vidare bör man som konstruktör leverera isometriska perspektiv alternativt digitala 3D ritningar för att tydliggöra komplicerade och kvalitetskritiska detaljer. Slutligen bör hantverkare på byggarbetsplatsen vara utbildade och se mervärdet av en sprickminimerad betong och väl utförd tätning av fogar och anslutande element. Konsulter och entreprenörer bör tillsammans efter varje projekt utvärdera valda tätningstekniker för att tillsammans driva de framåt i utvecklingen.

    Avvikelser i ett byggprojekt leder till bland annat förseningar. De kan även leda till för tidigt avslutadeaktiviteter. Oavsett blir detta ett problem då kontraktstiden för underentreprenörer är bestämda.Vad detta betyder är att blir en underentreprenör färdig för tidigt kommer det finnas en tidbuffert itidplan mellan färdig- och nästa aktivitet. Detta anses som en kostnad eftersom det inte utförs någotarbete. Blir en underentreprenör sen med färdigställande av en aktivitet blir detta ocksåproblematiskt då detta skjuter fram aktiviteter på den kritiska linjen. Förutsatt att de aktiviteternaligger på den kritiska linjen. Det ska förtydligas att fler former av avvikelser finns. Bland annatfelleverans, försenad transport, oförutsedda hinder under produktion m.m.

    En metod att åskådliggöra avvikelser tidigt efter initiering är att kontinuerligt under produktion följaupp aktiviteter med hjälp av mängdgrafer. Mängdgrafer är diagram som visar byggd mängd pertidsenhet och kumulativ byggd mängd. De ger en visuell bild över hur produktionen ligger till inuläget och med hjälp av dessa kan beslut fattas om ändringar i produktionen för att projektet skatidsmässigt åter hamna i fas. Mängdgrafer kommer i tre former. Planerade-, aktuella- &prognostiserade mängdgrafer.

    Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka hur BIM-verktyg under projektering kan stödja ettprojekt under produktion genom att förutse avvikelser. Ifall avvikelser upptäcks tidigt kan resurserjusteras eller arbetstider ändras för att projektet färdigställs enligt tidplan.

    Studien visar att mängdgraferna kan utvecklas relativt enkelt men det krävs väl genomtänktplanering och struktur på arbetet. Det rekommenderas att samordna en bra arbetsmetod för helaarbetet från början till slut genom att ha en samordnare som styr över modellen men också andratjänstemän som känner till programmet tillräckligt bra för att stötta och avlasta samordnaren vidbehov.

    Studien visar också att det är viktigt att modellutvecklare levererar modellen med bra ochstrukturerad namnbeteckning för objekten. Detta för att enklare kunna koppla KPI-tal till korrektmängdgraf. CoClass-klassifikationssystem (projektnamn BSAB 2.0) borde ligga till grund förnamngivning av objekt.

    Stockholm lies at the top in Europe in terms of population growth. It is growing from 30,000 to 40,000 residents each year and therefor puts high demands on the regions development. One of the governments reactions to this housing problem was to approve a bill that would simplify the regulatory framework in the planning and building act. It will among other permit owners of a one-or two family houses to build a 25  compliment housing without a building permit, so called attefallshus.

    In this final project, a small 25  house is designed. The house was designed to have thin exterior walls to maximize the indoor living space and also to fulfill all the Boverkets regulations for permanent housing. Vacuum Insulated panels were used as an insulation material in the envelope to achieve the extra thin exterior walls to maximize the living space. Various different simulations were done to simulate: Heat- and moisture transfer through the exterior walls, thermal bridges, energy calculations and the daylight factor inside the house. Additional calculations were done in Excel to compare the mean U-value calculated in simulations. The moisture transfer simulation did show that there should not be any moisture problems in the exterior walls. The mean U-value calculations in Excel and in the simulations showed values less than the limitations of Boverkets building regulations.

    ur society is today in a phase of development in environmental and sustainable thinking. Alarming reports show changes in climate caused by our load and exhaust of resources. The energy usage contributes to a big part of it, by its emission of carbon dioxide. The built environment uses around 40 % of the total energy consumption in Sweden and requests to strongly reduce it are presented from both EU and national level.

    This thesis brings up the subject of green building with a focus on how we can create more energy efficient buildings in projects of new construction. Since the construction industry today often fails to pass on the knowledge between different projects, as a return of experiences, the construction company Skanska suggested the topic for this thesis. The purpose was to study modern green solutions, used in different reference projects to collate and pass on the knowledge and experiences from both production and usage of the solutions, to indemnify the quality of them for energy efficiency.

    Five green solutions were selected:

     Green lighting installation

     Solar shields for facades of glass

     Heat recovery with MVHR-system

     Demand controlled systems

     Wall and terrace solution with insulation of PIR.

     

    The different solutions were at first studied theoretically and then, if possible, at the site of the project. Interviews were made with adequate people in the production and the intent with the thesis was to find out experiences of the chosen projects. Since the numbers of eco-certified buildings are increasing, an aim to link the different solutions with certifying systems rose, foremost towards the LEED system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – in line of Skanska’s environmental initiative.

    The result from the study of green solutions shows that green thinking and interests of energy efficiency by costumers – of economical or environmental reasons – are increasing. The review also shows the fact of green solutions requires economic investments, but a relatively short payoff time can be earned by reduced costs of energy savings.     The motivation for development of energy efficiency and implementation of novel advanced materials applied in buildings can be traced to increasing energy costs in conjunction with an enhanced environmental awareness among people. This doctoral dissertation presents contributions towards sustainable building, where factors such as building technology, energy efficiency in buildings, workers' health issues during construction measures, and certain economic considerations for renovation of buildings have been considered. The research study aims to provide a knowledge base for motivating building owners to renovate buildings based on energy efficiency and improved indoor environment. The initial phase of the research study identifies a detailed description of common drivers, expected in renovation projects by building owners. In the second phase, an information base is identified which may facilitate the bidding processes for decision makers by means of technological, social and economic aspects. The aforementioned information base can also contribute to attentive decisions regarding sustainable renovation and energy saving measures. A strategy was developed within the Renovation Workshop of Riksbyggen, in order to promote energy saving measures concurrent with major renovations in residential buildings. This operational decision support process was applied in a tenant owners' cooperative in Sweden. The objective of this process was to showcase and more importantly to implement energy saving measures, based on knowledge transfer between different parties involved in the renovation project. For the conducted case study, this process was shown to be of great importance when decisions regarding energy saving measures in conjunction with scheduled renovations are being planned. A unique case study was conducted on two of the most commonly used environmental certification programs for buildings in Sweden; Environmental Building (Miljöbyggnad) and GreenBuilding. Following a granted access to a limited database of submitted applications to Sweden Green Building Council, the most common mistakes in these were identified and categorized. This study contributed to further understanding about the level of ability among building consultants, comprehension of environmental certification, and enhancement of the ability to produce high-quality calculations concerning building-related energy usage. In addition, this insight can provide a basis for planning of continuing education of consultants within the field of building technology. For a church building, a study was conducted subsequent to an exchange of an existing electric coil heating system to a hydronic ground source heat pump system. Analyses of the energy demand and energy signature, prior to and after installation were carried out. The replacement of the original heating system with a ground source heat pump system for the church building constitutes a reduced energy consumption level of approximately 66%, at the average outside temperature of -2.30 °C. This study demonstrated that data from a detailed electric bill can be utilized in order to obtain the energy signature of the building and henceforth assess the energy savings. One aspect of the research, examined the decision making process related to sustainable renovation and refurbishment in buildings. The utilized methodology identified three distinct phases in order to instigate an engagement in sustainable renovation, by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. In particular, the attitudes of stakeholders in Sweden, Denmark and Cyprus to sustainable building were studied through three separate case studies. Within the framework of this study, it was identified that building physics and durability are among the most important drivers for energy renovation. The results provided an insight into the renovation process in the aforementioned countries and identified that drivers such as improvement of indoor air quality and elimination of moisture in the building envelope are also of crucial importance. Another aspect of the conducted research highlights workplace accidents occurring within the Swedish construction sector. The purpose of this study was to serve as a useful tool to track the working environments of construction workers in order to reduce health and safety issues within the construction sector. The findings of this research suggest that despite laws, regulations or additional factors that seek to ensure a safe and healthy environment for construction workers, the Swedish construction work force still faces challenges. Moreover, it is identified that construction workers participating in the study call for additional measures to ensure occupational health and safety. Improved knowledge of economic performance and technical results of renovations can contribute to a snowball effect, with more property owners recognizing the value of energy aspects and thus provide an increased level of energy savings.

    Research endeavors in architectural design date back to the foundations of building construction itself. Remarkably, the true limitations of design procedures stem from the confined boundaries preset in the mind of mankind. Even the perceptions an architect holds throughout the complex process of designing an architectural wonder, contributes to a fundamental impact on the performed procedures commonly applied. Research methodologies in architecture and design, tend to primarily focus on architectural visions, trends or the actual design features of a construction, and not on the person behind it all. Following efforts directed towards a trajectory that encircles the architect and his or her perception regarding architecture and design research, this work aims to highlight the views of many prominent architects whose architectural wonders have served as crucial milestones in history and influenced generations of people. A weave between an architect and her or his surroundings, cannot be treated as an isolated event. Puzzle pieces of gender roles, performatives, social influences, and insight regarding architectural research methods contribute to a larger architectural image and evolution. In order to establish the actual relations between architectural perspectives and words that support these, a chosen approach is to quote architects on issues considering architectural research endeavors. Similarly, underlying key points are elucidated with quotes that would communicate noteworthy aspects of adjacent theories.

    Historiography marks a relatively unexplored research domain in architecture. Despite the obscure nature of this subject matter, architectural historiography equally illuminates a hidden pathway to the historical interaction of architecture with art or literature. Critical historiography adds another dimension to this emerging research topic that further encapsulates multiple levels of criticism. In recognition of a growing interest for historiography, it can be argued that the critical aspects of historiography may serve as crucial instruments for an enhanced understanding of architectural historiography.     Promotion of sustainable renovation in the built environment: An early stage techno-economic approach2012Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)

    According to the Swedish Government's set targets for energy use and environmental quality imposed by the European Union, the total energy per heated unit area in residential and commercial buildings will have to be decreased by 20% in 2020 and 50% by 2050 in relation to the annual consumption of 1995. The building sector should additionally be completely independent of fossil fuels for energy usage, with the increasing sector of renewable energy continuously growing until 2020. In its current state, the number of multistory buildings and single-family houses in Sweden exceeds 4 000 000 units. In order to attain the set goals, renovation of the existing housing stock is a necessity given its current relatively slow turnover. As a result of the Swedish Million Unit Program undertaken during 1965−1974, about 750 000 apartments are currently in need of renovation in order to meet today's building standards. Simultaneously, new buildings are built with energy efficiency in mind. In this study an early stage methodology is developed for building refurbishment that takes advantage of a multi-faceted approach. The methodology comprises of multiple dimensions related to a techno-economic, environmental and building occupancy approach. The work presented herein includes a thorough literature review of decision making tools within the built environment and identifies major research efforts in sustainable refurbishment. The technical aspect of this study deals with the proper identification of high-efficient insulation materials that would serve one of the set purposes of energy efficiency when utilized within building envelopes. Further, results are shown for case studies, in which economic investments in Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) and a coupled heat and moisture transport for predefined configurations of VIPs with supplementary insulation of balcony slabs and wall cross-sections are considered. The developed methodology also examines simulations of the total energy consumption utilizing a set of different insulation materials such as mineral wool and VIPs, for a number of locations in Northern and Southern Europe. The research findings of this study identify several aspects of a new developed tool for decision making, to be used in sustainable renovation and refurbishment.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to promote energy saving measures concurrent with major planned renovation/refurbishment in residential buildings. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology comprises of case studies, in which the influence of various factors is identified on the overall decision making related to building renovation/refurbishment. Findings – The employed operational decision support process enables energy saving opportunities for residential buildings in conjunction with planned major renovations/refurbishments. Research limitations/implications – The research scope is confined to residential buildings in Sweden and cooperatives with tenants as the owners and governors. Practical implications – A novel approach to synergistic energy saving and renovation in residential buildings is exhibited. Social implications – The paper presents an altered viewpoint of energy renovation means for residential buildings in the built environment. Originality/value – The paper presents a novel approach for building owners to renovate a building in terms of improved performance, energy efficiency and indoor comfort in combination with planned renovations/refurbishments.

    A simulation approach is undertaken in order to analyze a planned building design based on peak load heating and peak load cooling analysis of an analytical model of the building. The geometry of the building enables a wide spectrum of modifications to be applied to the existing design. These simplistic modifications are utilized in order to estimate the influence of modifications in the design process on a number of performance parameters. In particular, sustainability has been assessed based on modified geometries and different geographical locations of the generic building structure. The employed methodology establishes a foundation for comparison between the original building design and a modified one, with particular significance placed on sustainable building design and the overall building performance. In light of the obtained results in this study, a relation between different geographical locations originating from a database of global weather information and building design can be presented for a generic building with emphasis on sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

    A case study on a multistory building is carried out with emphasis on sustainability and environmental impacts upon refurbishment, in comparison to the existing building performance. The study concerns a multistory building, established during the 1960s in Sweden, as an incentive of the Swedish government’s building strategy “The Million Unit Program”. In this article the difference in utilized insulation techniques in comparison to present building strategies is addressed with a simulation approach. In particular, results are presented for the estimated energy usage for heating calculated in conformity with EN ISO 13790 and based on a dynamic method for buildings prior to and after refurbishment with Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP). The economic and environmental benefits of a potential refurbishment are further highlighted in relation to the existing building performance.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The aim of this review article is to identify a number of key research efforts related to decision making tools in building refurbishment projects and selected energy efficiency efforts in the built environment. Following these findings a proposed research area with focus on energy in the building environment will be suggested for further investigation.

    Design/methodology/approach – Through a multilateral review study, a number of major research efforts in sustainable refurbishment are highlighted. The necessity of directing future research towards energy conservation is illustrated for a specific approach to developing the built environment.

    Findings – The findings of this article identify high performance thermal insulation solutions as one of the promising approaches to significant energy consumption reductions in buildings.

    Research limitations/implications – This review study is solely limited to the revisited research directions.

    Originality/value – This study successfully identifies a number of decision making tools related to building refurbishment and an initial research path in favor of building energy consumption reductions.

    Abstract [en]

    This article examines the decision making process related to sustainable renovation and refurbishment in buildings. The utilized methodology identifies three distinct phases in order to instigate an engagement in sustainable renovation, by means of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. In particular, the attitude of stakeholders in Sweden, Denmark and Cyprus to sustainable building renovation/refurbishment is studied through three separate case studies. Within the framework of this study, it is identified that building physics and durability are the most important drivers for energy renovation. In Sweden, Denmark and Cyprus, these factors are contributed by maintenance, deterioration and moisture, respectively. The results of the questionnaires and semi-structured interviews presented herein provide an insight into the renovation process in the aforementioned countries and reveal that economy is not the most important driver for energy renovation. Instead, the results signify that drivers such as improvement of indoor air quality and elimination of moisture in the building envelope are of crucial importance. Moreover, the practical implications of this research explore and identify existing instruments for sustainable renovation and refurbishment.

    Abstract [en]

    A large part of the available energy in the European Union is used for space heating of houses. This utilized energy presents an economical challenge as well as an environmental problem that ultimately must be dealt with by reducing the thermal losses through the climatic envelope. This reduction however, is intricate due to the spatial constraints in designated living areas and complexities arising from retrofitting of historical and cultural façades of the existing building stock. In light of the aforementioned problems, Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) may provide attractive solutions as they employ a thickness about one tenth of the required thickness, when using conventional insulation materials. This study contains a comparative analysis of VIP and traditional insulation materials and several other means of retrofitting in terms of life cycle energy and costs. Particular attention is given to the comparison of exterior and interior applications of VIP and the effects on the thermal bridges at the joints between the external wall and the adjacent floor slabs and balconies.

    In the last decades, the rehabilitation market has become increasingly significant in France. In particular, the renovation of university sites and hospitals from the 1970s, which is a fast growing segment of the French construction market. In parallel, the office and residential buildings construction sector is becoming a lot more environmentally friendly, with more efficient buildings and more advanced sustainable systems such as better design and implementation of renewable energy sources. This Master thesis, carried out in France with the company Elioth, focuses exclusively on the renovation market.

    The goal of this thesis is to determine a model that delivers forecast consumption for an existing building. The efforts during this Master Thesis project have been put to one typology of building in situation of an energetic performance commitment at Elioth. Rehabilitation projects on university campuses are the most ongoing and urgent demand from the company. So university as a based building has been chosen to support the thesis.

    The result of this Master thesis is a practical supporting protocol along with an operative tool named “Estim’ELIOTH”. It enables environmental engineers to define the data in their possession in order to use the tool to determine the energy consumption of the building studied. This feature aims to provide information for energy performance commitment management in the early stages of the design. Nowadays, this is essential for renovation projects in France.

    This study is concerned with the use of interior air channels in walls for the drying out of surplus water in floor constructions. The floor is to be dried out by the means of an air gap, while a heating cable at the bottom of an adjacent wall channel provides a driving force for the flow. The model of this study can be used to quantify the drying out capacity of such a construction, given the geometrical configuration and the effect of the cable. By posing heat and mass balance equations for a star network equivalent to the delta network of the actual physical problem the temperature and moisture profiles for the floor channel are obtained. The wetted surface of the floor is assumed to be saturated, while the saturated moisture content varies with temperature along the surface. The temperature and moisture distributions along the air gap and the drying out capacity are obtained as a function of the flow rate. The physical problem of the wall channel is posed in terms of the governing equations of conservation. The Boussinesq approximation is used to restrict the variation in density to that of the gravitational force. The buoyancy generated by the cable is related to the frictional forces of the channel walls, providing a relationship between the flow rate and the effect of the cable. The analytical results are compared with laboratory measurements and show good agreement for a number of different heights of the air gap in the floor.

    Vacuum insulation panels provide unprecedented possibilities for renovating the existing building stock in a manner that reduces the thermal losses through the building envelope. This study is focused on the implementation of VIPs (vacuum insulation panels) in energy retrofit projects with rendered outer walls. Particular emphasis is put on reducing the thermal bridges due to mechanical fasteners and at the joints of the panels. These are evaluated through a parametric study of the impact of the thermal conductivity of the joints of the panels and the adjacent insulation layer as well as the material of the fasteners. The study is carried out with 3D FEM (finite element method) simulations software. Furthermore, the moisture conditions in the construction are studied. The dynamic moisture behavior of a wall construction is modeled with a two dimensional FEM model. The long term effects of vapor diffusion are investigated in terms of accumulated moisture and the risk of condensation. The results illustrate that vacuum insulation on the outside of the wall construction does not pose a moisture problem to the construction. The simulations are based on a draft of a new technical solution for the refurbishment of a building that is typical for the great Swedish building program of the 1970s.
