    Abstract [en]

    Some novel techniques to do periodic poling of KTP are described. Emphasis on ways to avoid domain broadening and merging of domains is presented with reference to the original properties of flux grown KTP. For sub-Am structures E-beam lithography and deep UV-laser lithography were used to pattern the samples, and chemical process to promote selective poling to obtain high quality domain gratings in up to 1 mm thick samples.

    The domain structure of periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystals were studied on both the polar and nonpolar faces utilizing a voltage-modulated atomic force microscope. The measurements give information of domain nucleation, growth, and merging. Two different kind of overpoling behaviors have been observed depending on the magnitude of the applied field.

    A special kind of microstructured optical fiber was proposed and manufactured where, as well as the holey region (solid core and silica-air cladding), the fiber has also two large holes for electrode insertion. Bi-Sn and Au-Sn alloys were selectively inserted in those holes forming two parallel, continuous and homogeneous internal electrodes. We demonstrated the production of a monolithic device and its use to externally control some of the guidance properties (e.g. polarization) of the fiber.

    Abstract [en]

    One of the most practical means of generating tunable mid-infrared output is by using cascaded parametric down-conversion from 1 mu m, where efficient and reliable high-energy nanosecond lasers are well established. The overall efficiency of the cascade relies heavily on the efficiency of the first down-conversion stage where it is beneficial to employ quasi-phase matched crystals such as periodically-poled Rb: KTiOPO4 (PPRKTP). Ultimately, the pulse energy at 2 mu m and the optimum design of the first cascade will depend on the maximum intensity which could be safely applied to these crystals and therefore these schemes mandate investigation of nanosecond laser-induced damage threshold in KTiOPO4 (KTP) and Rb:KTiOPO4 (RKTP) at 1.064 mu m and 2 mu m. In the context of high-energy systems, where the beams are at most loosely focused, the limiting energy fluence will be determined by the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the bare surface. Therefore the LIDT of the bare surface is the lowest LIDT which has to be taken into account in design of robust 2 mu m parametric systems. We report surface LIDT measurements in KTP and RKTP with nanosecond pulses at 1.064 mu m and 2.1 mu m. We find that the reported LIDT for the bulk is far higher than that of the surface and therefore is unsuitable as a guide for the 2 mu m parametric system designs. LIDT values for KTP and RKTP with nanosecond pulses at 2 mu m have not been reported so far to the best of our knowledge.

    Energy scaling of infrared nanosecond optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers based on Rb:KTiOPO42018Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    High-energy, narrowband, nanosecond pulsed mid-infrared sources centred on 2 μm are requiredin applications in remote sensing, standoff detection and pollution monitoring using LIDARs.Currently, space-borne LIDAR missions are under development by major space agencies aroundthe world for active measurements of the atmospheric gas constituents and their dynamics. Thespectral range around 2 μm is one of the windows of operation for these instruments. Opticalparametric oscillators (OPOs) and amplifiers (OPAs) operating at 2 μm are often used as pumpsources for cascaded down-conversion schemes to enable generation of wavelengths deeper intothe mid-infrared. In order to fulfil these purposes, they are required to have high-energy outputwith good overall efficiency, while maintaining a narrowband or tailored spectrum. Moreover, forspace-based instruments, the radiation hardness of the parametric sources needs to be assessed.The central objectives of this thesis were the scaling of the energy and efficiency of 2 μm basedOPOs and OPAs, tailoring their spectral brightness and assessing their suitability for applicationsin space-borne active gas detection systems. Specifically, we investigated OPOs and OPAs basedon periodically-poled Rb:KTiOPO4 (PPRKTP), an engineered nonlinear material which can befabricated with large optical apertures and sub-μm periodicities. One of the key limitations toenergy scaling of these devices is the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the nonlinearmaterial used. In down-conversion schemes, the devices are subject to both high intensity 1 μmand 2 μm radiation. Prior to the work in this thesis, no LIDT value at 2 μm of KTP and Rb:KTPhad been reported. Furthermore, the work in this thesis provides data on effects of different dosageof gamma radiation on the optical properties of this material and the ways to mitigate the damageinduced by the ionizing radiation. To demonstrate energy scaling with narrow bandwidth andtunability, a nanosecond, master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system operating around 2μm and based on large-aperture PPRKTP was built. The MOPA system demonstrated dualnarrowband spectrum, tunable over 1.5 THz by means of a transversally chirped volume Bragggrating, while delivering tens of mJ in output. The output from this MOPA system will be furtherused for tunable THz generation. Even narrower spectra can be generated employing backwardwaveoptical parametric oscillators (BWOPO) based on PPRKTP with the periodicity of 509 nm.This work demonstrates for the first time an efficient, millijoule-level BWOPO with backwardpropagating signal. The device possessed narrowband spectrum with stable output, making it anexcellent seed source in MOPA arrangements.

    We investigate the effect of gamma radiation on flux grown KTiOPO4 and Rb:KTiOPO4 samples, as well as their periodically poled variants. Specifically, we study the altered transmission due to color-center formation via gamma irradiation. We measured the transmission of our samples for varying radiation doses and demonstrate effective temperature annealing of gamma radiation induced color centers. We measured a maximum transmission difference of 2% in our samples, which was easily corrected with temperature annealing. No long term and permanent changes were found to be induced in our samples.

    Abstract [en]

    Optimum design of high-energy cascaded parametric down-conversion schemes from 1 μm requires accurate knowledge of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the nonlinear crystal employed. We report surface LIDT measurements in KTiOPO4 (KTP) and Rb:KTP (RKTP) with nanosecond pulses at 1.064 μm and 2.1 μm. LIDT results for nanosecond pulses at 2 μm for KTP and RKTP have not been previously reported to the best of our knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

    A high-energy, ns, narrow-linewidth optical parametric oscillator and amplifier system based on large-aperture periodically poled Rb:KTP is presented. The 2 A mu m seed source is a singly resonant OPO locked with a transversely chirped volume Bragg grating, allowing a wavelength tuning of 21 nm and output linewidth of 0.56 nm. A maximum output energy of 52 mJ and conversion efficiency of 36% was obtained from the amplifier for a pump energy of 140 mJ. The high-energy and the robust and narrow dual-wavelength spectra obtained make this system an ideal pump source for difference frequency generation-based THz generation schemes.

We present a high-energy, 2 μm master oscillator power amplier (MOPA) based on large-aperture periodically poled Rb:KTP. A maximum output energy of 52 mJ was obtained with a conversion e›ciency of 40 %.

    We study Ag nanopattern arrays formed using ferroelectric lithography based on two separate approaches, i.e., periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) and periodically proton exchanged (PPE) template methods. We demonstrate that such nanoarrays are plasmon active. Raman spectroscopy was applied to study molecular probe 4-aminothiophenol (4-ABT) absorbed onto a silver nanostructured array. The observed Raman spectra show peaks arising from b2 modes, which occur for plasmon enhanced Raman from 4-ABT in place of a1 modes, which occur in normal Raman scattering. We demonstrate that the PPLN and PPE substrates possess different plasmonic properties with PPE creating a stronger SERS signal relative to PPLN substrates.

    We demonstrate enhanced second-harmonic generation in arrays of nanowaveguides satisfying modal-phase-matching condition, both theoretically and experimentally. The overlap of interacting fields defined by the fundamental mode of the pump and the second-order mode of the second-harmonic wave is enhanced by the longitudinal component of the nonlinear polarization density. For guided modes with significant longitudinal electric field components, the overlap of fields is comparable to that obtained in the quasi-phase-matching technique leading to higher conversion efficiencies. Thus, the presented method is preferable to achieve higher conversion efficiency in second-order nonlinear processes in nanowaveguides.

    We report on the fabrication of gallium phosphide (GaP) nanowaveguides of controlled dimensions, as small as 0.03 μm and aspect ratio in excess of 20, using focused ion beam (FIB) milling. A known limitation of this fabrication process for photonic applications is the formation of gallium droplets on the surface. We demonstrate a post-fabrication step using a pulsed laser to locally oxidize the excess surface gallium on the FIB milled nanostructures. The process significantly reduces the waveguide losses. The surface optical quality of the fabricated GaP nanowaveguides has been evaluated by second-harmonic generation experiments. Surface and bulk contributions to second-order optical nonlinearities have been identified by polarization measurements. The presented method can potentially be applied to other III-V nanostructures to reduce optical losses.

    Gold nanoparticles have been used since antiquity for the production of red-colored glasses. More recently, it was determined that this color is caused by plasmon resonance, which additionally increases the material's nonlinear optical response, allowing for the improvement of numerous optical devices. Interest in silica fibers containing gold nanoparticles has increased recently, aiming at the integration of nonlinear devices with conventional optical fibers. However, fabrication is challenging due to the high temperatures required for silica processing and fibers with gold nanoparticles were solely demonstrated using sol-gel techniques. We show a new fabrication technique based on standard preform/fiber fabrication methods, where nanoparticles are nucleated by heat in a furnace or by laser exposure with unprecedented control over particle size, concentration, and distribution. Plasmon absorption peaks exceeding 800 dB m(-1) at 514-536 nm wavelengths were observed, indicating higher achievable nanoparticle concentrations than previously reported. The measured resonant nonlinear refractive index, (6.75 ± 0.55) × 10(-15) m(2) W(-1), represents an improvement of >50×.

    Blue lasers have numerous applications in spectroscopy, underwater communication and material processing. Direct emission in the blue region can be achieved with laser diodes, with powers up to the watt level [1]. Higher powers require efficient laser operating around 950 nm to be frequency doubled to the blue spectrum, which usually suffer from a lower gain than conventional 1μm lasers. Generally, intracavity frequency doubling set-ups and pulsed operation are used to increase the second harmonic generation efficiency, with output powers up to 4 W in cw[2] and 1.3W in pulsed regime [3]. In the past few years, both lasers materials and non linear crystals have progressed enough to allow the very simple extracavity frequency doubling of continuous wave lasers in periodically poled materials to acceptable powers[4].

    The third-order nonlinearity is measured for TeO2-ZnO-Na2O (TZN) glasses codoped with BaO, Nb2O5, and La2O3. The results for the sign and magnitude of the nonlinearity were obtained using a combination of the eclipse Z-scan with thermal nonlinearity managed Z-scan, whereas the Kerr shutter technique was employed to obtain the electronic time response of the nonlinearity, all performed with 76 MHz repetition rate 150 fs pulses at 800 nm. The results show a fast response (< 200 fs) and a nonlinear refractive index varying from 1.5 to 3.5x10(-15) cm(2)/W, depending upon glass composition. At the peak power level employed, nonlinear absorption was negligible. The results obtained are in good agreement with other tellurite compositions reported, confirming the electronic origin of the nonlinearity.

    Abstract [en]

    We present an all-solid-state narrow-linewidth laser source emitting 670 mW output power at 671 nm delivered in a diffraction-limited beam. The source is based on a frequency-doubled diode-end-pumped ring laser operating on the 4F 3/2 → 4I 13/2 transition in Nd:YVO 4. By using periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (ppKTP) in an external buildup cavity, doubling efficiencies of up to 86% are obtained. Tunability of the source over 100 GHz is accomplished. We demonstrate the suitability of this robust frequency-stabilized light source for laser cooling of lithium atoms. Finally, a simplified design based on intracavity doubling is described and first results are presented.
