    Abstract [en]

    One of the most practical means of generating tunable mid-infrared output is by using cascaded parametric down-conversion from 1 mu m, where efficient and reliable high-energy nanosecond lasers are well established. The overall efficiency of the cascade relies heavily on the efficiency of the first down-conversion stage where it is beneficial to employ quasi-phase matched crystals such as periodically-poled Rb: KTiOPO4 (PPRKTP). Ultimately, the pulse energy at 2 mu m and the optimum design of the first cascade will depend on the maximum intensity which could be safely applied to these crystals and therefore these schemes mandate investigation of nanosecond laser-induced damage threshold in KTiOPO4 (KTP) and Rb:KTiOPO4 (RKTP) at 1.064 mu m and 2 mu m. In the context of high-energy systems, where the beams are at most loosely focused, the limiting energy fluence will be determined by the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of the bare surface. Therefore the LIDT of the bare surface is the lowest LIDT which has to be taken into account in design of robust 2 mu m parametric systems. We report surface LIDT measurements in KTP and RKTP with nanosecond pulses at 1.064 mu m and 2.1 mu m. We find that the reported LIDT for the bulk is far higher than that of the surface and therefore is unsuitable as a guide for the 2 mu m parametric system designs. LIDT values for KTP and RKTP with nanosecond pulses at 2 mu m have not been reported so far to the best of our knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

    We investigate the effect of gamma radiation on flux grown KTiOPO4 and Rb:KTiOPO4 samples, as well as their periodically poled variants. Specifically, we study the altered transmission due to color-center formation via gamma irradiation. We measured the transmission of our samples for varying radiation doses and demonstrate effective temperature annealing of gamma radiation induced color centers. We measured a maximum transmission difference of 2% in our samples, which was easily corrected with temperature annealing. No long term and permanent changes were found to be induced in our samples.

    Abstract [en]

    A high-energy, ns, narrow-linewidth optical parametric oscillator and amplifier system based on large-aperture periodically poled Rb:KTP is presented. The 2 A mu m seed source is a singly resonant OPO locked with a transversely chirped volume Bragg grating, allowing a wavelength tuning of 21 nm and output linewidth of 0.56 nm. A maximum output energy of 52 mJ and conversion efficiency of 36% was obtained from the amplifier for a pump energy of 140 mJ. The high-energy and the robust and narrow dual-wavelength spectra obtained make this system an ideal pump source for difference frequency generation-based THz generation schemes.

    Abstract [en]

    We report on the development of a nanosecond mirrorless optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped at 1 mu m. The gain medium of the OPO was periodically poled Rubidium-doped KTP with a grating period of Lambda = 509 nm for the first order quasi-phase matching. For grating periods of this length, we demonstrate backward propagation of the signal field and forward propagation of the idler field. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such a counter-propagating geometry has been demonstrated in mirrorless OPOs. Pumping with a maximum energy of 6.48 mJ, the OPO yielded an overall conversion efficiency exceeding 53% with signal and idler energies of 1.96 mJ and 1.46 mJ, respectively. The generated signal and idler field spectra were measured to show narrowband linewidths on the order of 0.5 nm. We motivate that such a MOPO is ideal for seeding applications and discuss further improvements and work.

We present a high-energy, 2 μm master oscillator power amplier (MOPA) based on large-aperture periodically poled Rb:KTP. A maximum output energy of 52 mJ was obtained with a conversion e›ciency of 40 %.

    A train of Q-switched pulses is formed in a diode-pumped microchip laser consisting of an Er-Yb:GdCa4O(BC3)3 active and Co2+:MgAl2C4:Co passive element. The pulses' durations were in the range of 1.6-6 ns and maximum output power was 88.2 mW at 928 mW of absorbed power.

    Abstract [en]

    We report on what is to our knowledge the first realization of a quasi-phase-matched optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on a crystal with a cylindrical shape. The main reason for interest in this device is its broad, continuous tuning. In experiments with a 1064-nm pump, the signal tuning range was equal to 525 nn (1515-2040 nm), and the corresponding idler was continuously tuned over 1340 nn (2220-3560 nm). The angular tuning was 26 degrees, with only a minor variation of the OPO threshold over the entire tuning range.

    A two-stage optical parametric amplifier generating 5 ns 208 kW peak power pulses in the spectral region at 1.535 mum in a diffraction-limited beam was realized in a single periodically poled KTP crystal. The maximum small-signal gain for the two stages reached 75dB and the total conversion efficiency was 30%. An analysis of the small-signal gain dependence on the M-2 of the pump beam is presented for the collinear and noncollinear OPA. Efficient spectral broadening of the signal was demonstrated in short pieces of single-mode telecommunication fiber.

    We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the bandwidth in a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier can be substantially increased by noncollinear interaction in a quasi-phase-matched single-periodicity structure. Broadband amplification of signals between 1540 and 1720 nm was realized in periodically poled KTiOPO4. The achieved signal bandwidth of 6.9 THz at 1680 nm is large enough to accommodate sub-100 fs optical pulses.

The pulses, which had durations between 20 ps and 2 ns, were amplified with up to 50 dB in a double stage set-up and reached pulse energies of 1 and 23 mu J, respectively.

    The domain wall regions in periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystals were examined and found to give rise to phasematched second harmonic generation in the Cerenkov directions. This phenomenon is caused by the nonlinear coefficients d(11) and d(12), which are not present in single domain regions, but are nonzero at and close to domain walls. The appearance of these nonlinearities is attributed to strain, produced by the domain inversion process and results in the creation of a dc piezoelectric field.

    Electric-field poling has been used to fabricate quasi-phase-matched frequency converters in RbTiOPO4. A more accurate Sellmeier equation has been obtained for wavelengths between 0.43 and 3.4 mum. The dispersion of the thermo-optic coefficient for n(z) refractive index has been derived in the near- to mid-infrared spectral region. The nonlinear performance of periodically poled RbTiOPO4 obtained in the infrared optical parametric devices is comparable to that of periodically poled KTiOPO4.

    We demonstrate twin-beam parametric generation arising from the coherent locking of two resonances of a purely nonlinear lattice, implemented with hexagonally poled LiTaO3. The experiments provide a first example for the novel engineering capabilities affordable in frequency-downconversion with quadratic photonic crystals, to be exploited for novel parametric sources in classical and quantum optics.

    The nonlinear refractive index (n(2)) of several NaT(WO4)(2) (T = Y, La, Gd, Lu and Bi) and NaY(MoO4)(2) femtosecond laser crystals has been measured using the z-scan technique. These tetragonal crystals with structural local disorder present significant n(2) values, which should allow their efficient laser pulsed operation by Kerr-lens mode locking, especially NaBi(WO4)(2), 68x10(-16) cm(2)/W (for sigma light), which is about twice than for the others. This difference is attributed to the high polarizability associated with the lone electron pair of Bi3+.

    The continuous-wave laser operation of Nd-doped tetragonal NaLa(WO4)(2) crystal is studied at room temperature by optical pumping in the spectral region overlapping AlGaAs diode laser emission. This crystal has inhomogenously broadened optical bands. From the room-temperature spectroscopic parameters determined it is found that the optimum Nd concentration for the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(J) laser channels must be in the 3-5 at.% range. For J = 11/2 and 13/2 channels (lambda approximate to 1.06 and 1.3 mu m) the most favourable polarization configuration is parallel to the crystallographic c axis, while for J = 9/2 little polarization dependence of the laser efficiency is predicted. Laser operation was achieved with a 3.35 at.% Nd-doped sample grown by the Czochralski method. The laser operation was tested in an hemispherical optical cavity pumped by a Ti:sapphire laser. Stimulated emission at lambda = 1056 nm was achieved for a wide spectral pumping range, lambda = 790-820 nm. Stimulated Raman scattering was achieved in the picosecond regime with an efficiency similar to that of monoclinic KY(WO4)(2) reference compound.

Tetragonal (space group I4) Na-based double tungstates NaT(WO(4))(2) (T = Y, La, Gd, Lu and Bi) and double molybdate NaY(MoO(4))(2), as well as the monoclinic (space group C2/c) Li(3)Gd(3)Ba(2)(MoO(4))(8) crystals, have been measured by the z-scan technique. All these crystals present structural local disorder, and among them the tetragonal ones exhibit significant n(2) values, which should allow their efficient laser pulsed operation by Kerr-lens mode locking, especially NaBi(WO(4))(2), 68x10(-16) cm(2)/W (for sigma light), which is about twice than for the others. This feature is attributed to the high polarizability associated to the lone electron pair of Bi(3+).

    Abstract [en]

    We demonstrate a photographic method to view the inversion of ferroelectric domains during the periodic electric field poling of KTiOPO4 by taking advantage of the electro-optic effect and a high speed charge coupled device (CCD) camera. The method is noninvasive and allows monitoring in situ and in real time. The high speed CCD camera opens up the possibility to observe the dynamics of the domains during poling and to probe the samples afterwards to evaluate the grating formed in the material. This monitoring method should be applicable to other ferroelectric crystals, as well.

    Abstract [en]

    An optical parametric amplifier based on periodically poled KTiOPO4 was used to generate 3-ns pulses at 1.544 mum. The device was pumped by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and the signal output-pulse energy reached 71 muJ; the maximum gain was 66 dB. The seed source was an Er-Yb:glass microchip laser. A theoretical fit to experimental data gave an effective nonlinear coefficient of 9.7 pm/V, close to the highest values reported for periodically poled KTiOPO4. Furthermore, the broad parametric gain observed could be used for broadband pulse amplification.
