    Abstract [en]

    Using silicon as a central atom of porphyrin allows the introduction of axial ligands, which are not only employed to prevent the aggregation of the macrocycles but also anchor the dyes onto the TiO2 surface. A dye-sensitized solar cell with this porphyrin sensitizer achieved a broad IPCE of around 40-60% between 380 and 670 nm.

    Although the Gd ion in Gd@C-82 has been shown to lie above the C-C bond on the C-2 axis as an anomalous structure from the MEM/Rietveld analysis, the present XANES study reveals that it lies above the hexagon on the C-2 axis as a normal structure, and Gd oscillates around its equilibrium position with an amplitude increasing with temperature increase.

    Inverse-vulcanized polymeric sulfur has been prepared and utilized for solid-state dye sensitized solar cells. A power conversion efficiency of 1.5% was recorded with a short-circuit current of 4.1 mA cm-2 and an open-circuit voltage of 0.75 V under standard AM 1.5G illumination (1000 W m-2). The results in the present study qualify the new polymeric sulfur material as a future candidate as low-cost, hole-transport material for solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells.

    Microwave irradiation efficiently heats up the microwave-inert materials in the range of applied frequencies when two microwave-inert materials are brought into contact in the layered configuration. This heating is applied for annealing TiO2 nanoporous films for dye-sensitized solar cells achieving a one order of magnitude more rapid annealing process for comparable performances.

    By a facile strategy, we obtained three pure regioisomers of multiaryl coronene bisimide (CBI) derivatives via IBr-mediated annelation and subsequent Suzuki coupling reactions with high yields. A series of aromatic groups with different electron properties were efficiently introduced to obtain functional CBI derivatives under mild conditions with good yields. Furthermore, the annelation mechanism as well as the optical and electrochemical properties of CBI derivatives were further investigated.

    Dynamic time-resolved Raman spectroelectrochemistry demonstrates the strong influence of nanostructuring and surface charge of in situ activated disposable substrates for SERS detection. Under specific conditions, a large enhancement factor and estimated calculations agree with the feasible detection of only a few molecules, approaching the limit of single-entity detection.

    We aim to introduce photoactivated optical ion sensors based on a triggered ion exchange process as novel dynamic tools. The quantification of the acidity change upon photoactivation of spiropyran within an organic membrane phase during photo-excitation is described here for the first time, suggesting a large pK(a) change of more than 6 orders of magnitude.

    Two water soluble copper(ii) complexes containing amine-pyridine ligands were found to be catalytically active for water oxidation reactions in basic solutions, with observed rate constants of 13.1-18.7 s−1. These complexes are robust in basic solutions and displayed good stability over 5 h of electrolysis in pH 11.5 phosphate buffer at 1.4 V vs. NHE.

    XS1-XS3 have been synthesized by introducing an auxiliary acceptor into D-pi-A dyes for simultaneous filling up of both absorption valleys of porphyrin dyes at around 550 and 380 nm. Thus, panchromatic DSSCs with the highest efficiency of 10.75% were achieved by cosensitization. This work provides a strategy for designing cosensitizers for porphyrin dyes.

    Based on molecular modelling, the enzyme Candida antarctica lipase B was redesigned as a catalyst for the ring opening polymerization of D, D-lactide. Two mutants with 90-fold increased activity as compared to the wild-type enzyme were created. In a preparative synthesis of poly(D,D-lactide) the mutants greatly improved the rate and the degree of polymerization.

    Two novel dopant-free hole-transport materials (HTMs) with spiro[dibenzo[c,h]xanthene-7,9-fluorene] (SDBXF) skeletons were prepared via facile synthesis routes. A power conversion efficiency of 15.9% in perovskite solar cells is attained by using one HTM without dopants, which is much higher than undoped Spiro-OMeTAD-based devices (10.8%). The crystal structures of both new HTMs were systematically investigated to reveal the reasons behind such differences in performance and to indicate the design principles of more advanced HTMs.

    We report that dye-doped fluorescent silica nanoparticles (FSNPs) are highly efficient labels for glycans. Mono- and oligo-saccharides were conjugated to FSNPs using a general photocoupling chemistry. FSNP-labeled glycans were applied to image and detect bacteria, and to study carbohydrate-lectin interactions on a lectin microarray.

    Abstract [en]

    The widely studied water oxidation catalyst [Ru-II(tpy)(L)(OH2)](2+) (tpy = 2,2': 6',2"-terpyridine, L = bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine or L = bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine) is still under scrutiny. Here we present a new suggestion for one of the key steps, results that could resolve conflicting interpretations of experimental results. Instead of the previously proposed Ru-V=O species, a proposed key species in water oxidation catalysis, we propose that the third oxidation of RuII could lead to a Ru-III N-oxide, via rapid water coordination followed by oxidation and concerted N-O bond formation.

    By using density functional theory on [FeFe]-hydrogenase mimics we deconvolute the function of pendant amine bases in proton transfer to and from the metal center. By dividing the high free energy barrier into one high enthalpy-low entropy barrier and one with a low enthalpy-high entropy, a lower free energy barrier is reached.

    A BiVO4-reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composite in conjugation with the cubic molecular complex Co4O4(O2CMe)(4)(py)(4) (py = pyridine) has been found to be highly efficient towards visible light-driven water oxidation. A 4-fold enhancement in the average oxygen evolution rate and 100% yield based on the consumption of the sacrificial electron acceptor were obtained upon the addition of molecular cocatalysts to BiVO4-RGO in pure water.

    A self-recoverable mechanoconversion of multicolor luminescence was observed by crystallization-induced self-assembly. Such a self-assembly led to the formation of nanorods with different molecular stacking modes, thus making the phosphorescence/fluorescence proportion alterable. Therefore, multicolor luminescence of the single luminophore can be achieved by a straightforward reversible mechanical stimulus.
