    Abstract [en]

    A tunable all-optical microwave notch filter with a negative tap based on a semiconductor optical amplifier and a dispersive medium is demonstrated. A negative tap is realized through the cross gain modulation in the semiconductor optical amplifier. The free spectrum range of the notch filter can be tuned by tuning the wavelength of one of the two laser sources. The influence of the amplitude mismatch of the two lasers on the performance of the filter is analyzed. The present notch filter is easy to implement and cost-effective.

    Abstract [en]

    CdTe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots were directly synthesized in an aqueous condition by heating a mixed solution of ZnCl2, NaHSe and CdTe QDs in the presence of mercaptosuccinic acid as a stabilizer. By controlling the size and composition, the CdTe/ZnSe QDs with emission wavelength ranging from 540 to 630 nm, high quantum yield (44%) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) could be obtained. Characterization results with HRTEM, XRD and EDX have shown that the synthesized CdTe/ZnSe ON have good monodispersity and a nice crystal structure, and exhibited better stability and less cytotoxicity as compared with CdTe QDs. Furthermore, luminescent QD-IgG bioprobes were produced to detect the breast cancer marker Her2 on the surface of fixed MCF-7 cancer cells for their optical imaging.

    Abstract [en]

    We propose the generation of two-channel time-energy entangled twin photons based on two simultaneous first-order quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a monochromatic pump. The theoretical model for the generation of the entangled photons is established, and the analytical solution is obtained in a lossless crystal with an undepleted pump assumption. The generated condition of entangled photons is achieved in terms of the QPM grating period and the pump wavelength. It is shown that two channels of entangled twin photons with different wavelengths can be created by suitably choosing the PPLN grating period once the pump wavelength is fixed, which provides the potential to introduce the wavelength division multiplexed technique into quantum information systems.

    Abstract [en]

    We theoretically present the bandwidth enhancement methods of the telecom-region entangled twin photons generated by quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals. By using type I (e --> e + e) SPDC, the degenerate entangled twin photons will have a broad bandwidth and it can be further enhanced by shortening the crystal length, detuning the pump wavelength or adjusting the working temperature of the PPLN crystal. This principle provides the possibility to introduce wavelength-division-multiplexed technique into quantum information systems.

    Abstract [en]

    A frequency up/down-converter is proposed based on fiber-four-wave-mixing (FWM) between the output of a dual-wavelength fiber laser and the modulated optical carrier for bidirection radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Frequency, up-conversion from 1.50 to 11.08 GHz and down-conversion from 10.60 to 1.02 GHz are successfully demonstrated and a small efficiency difference between up- and down-conversions has been achieved. A proposal of setting up a bidirectional RoF system based on fiber FWM frequency converter is presented.

    We propose and demonstrate a novel optical method to generate multi-level signals with reduced driving voltage through degenerate four-wave mixing processes. With the present approach, it is possible to extend the size of the signal constellations and at the same time reduce the modulator driving voltage without bandwidth degradations. In our experiments, one amplitude shift keying (ASK) signal and one differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal are used to generate one ASK-DPSK signal with clearly opened eye-diagrams and error-free demodulation results. Our numerical simulations show that the proposed method is applicable for generating several 8-ary and 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals with silicon waveguides at a higher modulation baud rate.

    Abstract [en]

    The evolutional optical behaviours (turn-on dynamics) of a four-level N-configuration atomic system are considered based on the transient solution to the equations of motion of atomic probability amplitudes. It is shown that the quantum interference between the signal and control fields can lead to the controllable absorption and transparency properties of the atomic vapour. One of the most remarkable properties of the present scheme is that the absorption (or transmittance) of the probe light in the atomic vapour depends on the intensity ratio of the signal field to the control field, and thus the tunable optical features (transparency or opaqueness to the probe light) can be realized by tuning the quantum interferences between the signal and control fields. The present mechanism can be applicable to designs of some new photonic and quantum optical devices such as logic and functional devices as well as optical switches. Two typical photonic logic gates (NOT and NOR gates) designed based on the tunable four-level optical responses are presented as illustrative examples.

    Unidirectional optical manipulation, especially the coupling from a vertical light beam to a waveguide unidirectionally, is desirable in photonic integration. We first propose a hybrid unidirectional meta-coupler for vertical incidence to a high-refractive-index waveguide in telecom wavelength, a periodic plasmonic metasurface composed of metal-insulator-metal unit cells is used for phase matching. Three designs are given for devices working around wavelengths 0.85, 1.31, and 1.55 mu m. The simulated coupling efficiencies are all around 70%, and the 1 dB coupling bandwidths are 29, 82, and 105 nm, respectively. Our approach paves the way for the applications of optical metasurfaces to planar lightwave circuits. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

    The coherence multiplexing of absorption sensors is realized based on a path-scanning Michelson interferometer (MI). The sensing units are designed with different optical path lengths, and the signals from the inline sensing array can be demultiplexed by a path-scanning MI. Intra-cavity absorbance in each unit can be deduced from the corresponding signal and the signals of the previous sensing units.

    We describe a four-layered model for near infrared light propagation in a human head based on the Monte Carlo method. With the use of three-dimensional voxel-based media discretization, photon migration in the brain is analyzed by both the time-of-flight measurement and the spatial sensitivity profile. In the measurement of brain activity, the selection of light wavelength and the distance between the source and the detector have a great influence on the detected signal. In this study, we compare the detected signals from the detectors with different source-detector spacing at wavelengths of 690 nm, 800 nm and 1300 nm, and find that in our model, the wavelength of 1300 nm is more appropriate for the measurement of brain activity because the signals at 1300 nm get better detection sensitivity and spatial resolution. Source-detector spacing is also optimized.

    We report on the synthesis and characterization of crystalline InP and Ga(2)O(3) nanowires. The nanowires are synthesized using a simple method based on vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) growth; a method we believe could form the basis of cheap and simple fabrication of crystalline nanowires of a broad range of semiconductor materials, including III-IV compounds and semiconductor oxides. The reported InP nanowires have an average diameter of 30nm and the Ga(2)O(3) nanowires diameters down to 100nm. Characterization data including SEM, XRD, TEM and PL are presented.

    We introduce a broadband THz absorber with an array of graphene-dielectric multilayered frustum pyramids on a metal sheet. The multilayered graphene-dielectric structure can be considered an effectively homogeneous metamaterial with an hyperbolic dispersion and anisotropic permittivity. Surface plasmonic waves are excited on graphene layers and the incident waves of different frequencies are absorbed at different levels of the stacked pyramid, due to the squeezing effect of the slow waves at the tapered waveguide. An absorption dip is observed and explained physically, and finally removed by adding a rectangular portion to the pyramid unit cell. High absorption with an extremely broad bandwidth from 8 THz to over 100 THz is achieved. The absorption spectrum of the present structure can be scaled down to a lower frequency (e.g. 2 THz) by increasing the size of the unit cell.

    We review some recent approaches to transmission enhancement and light harvesting based on optical nano-antennas and metamaterials. Nano-cavity antennas are used to enhance the extraordinary transmission of TM-polarized light through vertical nano-slits in a metal film. The enhanced transmission of TE-polarized waves through an array of subwavelength-slits in a thin metal film at low frequencies (including microwave) is also investigated. Light harvesting with a metamaterial cloaking shell is also demonstrated.

    Here we realize a broadband absorber by using a hyperbolic metamaterial composed of alternating aluminum-alumina thin films based on superposition of multiple slow-wave modes. Our super absorber ensures broadband and polarization-insensitive light absorption over almost the entire solar spectrum, near-infrared and short-wavelength infrared regime (500-2500 nm) with a simulated absorption of over 90%. The designed structure is fabricated and the measured results are given. This absorber yields an average measured absorption of 85% in the spectrum ranging from 500nm to 2300 nm. The proposed absorbers open an avenue towards realizing thermal emission and energy- harvesting materials.

    Abstract [en]

    It was claimed that the incident light can be gradually slowed down and finally trapped in a tapered metamaterial waveguide. Here we show that the energy incident from the input port of the tapered metamaterial waveguide will be totally reflected (instead of being trapped) due to the strong intermodal coupling between the forward and backward modes. The underlying physical mechanism for this strong intermodal-coupling is given. The occurrence of energy reflection is unambiguously proved using several independent methods, (1) the semi-analytical mode matching technique, (2) the numerical finite element simulation, (3) the requirement of energy and momentum conservation, and (4) an experimental verification at microwave frequency. The dream of 'trapped rainbow' for storage of light might still be possible if this intermodal coupling could be blocked, and our study provides a useful guidance for such an endeavor.

    Abstract [en]

    By reductio ad absurdum, we show that a perfect power combiner of single-mode waveguides is impossible for incoherent input waves of the same frequency and same polarization as it is against the law of conservation of energy. The inevitable 3 dB loss of a three-port power combiner is explained physically. An incoherent power combiner of nearly 100% efficiency can be realized only if the two input fields have different wavelengths, have different polarizations, or are of orthogonal modes.

    Abstract [en]

    A layered Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method is exploited to study the subwavelength imaging through a slab of rods-in-air photonic crystal. Both the intensity and phase spectra of transmission are investigated. The high transmission of evanescent waves arises due to the excitation of some slab-guided bound modes and the high coupling between the incident evanescent field and some bulk-guided Bloch modes. Through a study of the phase spectrum of transmission, it is shown that the self-collimation effect occurs at smaller incident angles whereas the negative refraction effect occurs at relatively larger incident angles. The existence of imaging aberrations is also explained with the phase spectrum. The focusing properties of the photonic crystal slab are mainly due to the negative-refraction effect for large incident angles, rather than the self-collimation effect.

    Abstract [en]

    We report some of our recent progress in enhancing the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT), perfect absorption and field squeezing. Based on the excitation of surface plasmon waves in optical nano-antennas, the extraordinary transmission of light through a vertical nano-slit in a metal film is realized. Omni-directional, broadband and polarization-insensitive absorption of light is achieved in a thin metamaterial absorber which consists of cross-antennas and a metal ground. A dielectric split ring inside a permeability-near-zero metamaterial is used to squeeze electromagnetic energy and obtain strong magnetic field at the gap without using any resonance mechanism.

    Abstract [en]

    A low-complexity optical phase noise suppression approach based on recursive principal components elimination, R-PCE, is proposed and theoretically derived for CO-OFDM systems. Through frequency domain principal components estimation and elimination, signal distortion caused by optical phase noise is mitigated by R-PCE. Since matrix inversion and domain transformation are completely avoided, compared with the case of the orthogonal basis expansion algorithm (L = 3) that offers a similar laser linewidth tolerance, the computational complexities of multiple principal components estimation are drastically reduced in the R-PCE by factors of about 7 and 5 for q = 3 and 4, respectively. The feasibility of optical phase noise suppression with the R-PCE and its decision-aided version (DA-R-PCE) in the QPSK/16QAM CO-OFDM system are demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulations, which verify that R-PCE with only a few number of principal components q (= 3) provides a significantly larger laser linewidth tolerance than conventional algorithms, including the common phase error compensation algorithm and linear interpolation algorithm. Numerical results show that the optimal performance of R-PCE and DA-R-PCE can be achieved with a moderate q, which is beneficial for low-complexity hardware implementation.

    Bifunctional electrocatalysts are highly desired for overall water splitting. Herein, the design and fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical earth-abundant transition bimetallic phosphide arrays constructed by one-dimensional tubular array that was derived from assembling two-dimensional nanosheet framework has been reported by tailoring the Co/Ni ratio and tunable morphologies, and zero-dimensional (0D) graphene dots were embedded on Co-Ni phosphide matrix to construct 0D/2D tubular array as a highly efficient electrode in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). On the basis of advanced merits, such as the high surface-active sites, well-dispersed graphene dots, and enhanced electron transfer capacity as well as the confinement effect of the graphene dots on the nanosheets, the integrated GDs/Co0.8Ni0.2P tubular arrays as anode and cathode exhibit excellent OER and HER performance. By use of GDs/Co0.8Ni0.2 arrays in the two-electrode setup of the device, a remarkable electrocatalytic performance for full water splitting has been achieved with a high current density of 10 mA cm-2 at 1.54 V and outstanding long-term operation stability in an alkaline environment, indicating a promising system based on nonprecious-metal electrocatalysts toward potential practical devices of overall water splitting.

    The development of active bifunctional electrocatalysts with low cost and earth-abundance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a great challenge for overall water splitting. Herein, metallic Ni4Mo nanoalloys are firstly implanted on the surface of NiMoOx nanowires array (NiMo/NiMoOx) as metal/metal oxides hybrid. Inspired by the superiority of carbon conductivity, an ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon sheath intercalated NiMo/NiMoOx (NC/NiMo/NiMoOx) nanowires as integrated core-shell architecture are constructed. The integrated NC/NiMo/NiMoOx array exhibits an overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a low Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1) for HER due to the abundant active sites, fast electron transport, low charge-transfer resistance, unique architectural structure and synergistic effect of carbon sheath, nanoalloys, and oxides. Moreover, as OER catalysts, the NC/NiMo/NiMoOx hybrids require an overpotential of 284 mV at 10 mA cm(-2). More importantly, the NC/NiMo/NiMoOx array as a highly active and stable electrocatalyst approaches approximate to 10 mA cm(-2) at a voltage of 1.57 V, opening an avenue to the rational design and fabrication of the promising electrode materials with architecture structures toward the electrochemical energy storage and conversion.

    Localized surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which can decay non-radiatively into hot carriers, have been widely employed to extend the responses of traditional semiconductor-based photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices to sub-bandgap photons. However, radiative decay is unavoidable and adverse to device performances. Here, we propose to take advantage of propagating SPPs, another form of SPPs, which possess non-radiative decay only. A special gold-titanium dioxide nanowire array with each nanowire capped with a nanocone is proposed. The adjacent nanocones forming top gradual openings attribute to efficient sunlight harvesting, while the neighbouring nanowires forming bottom nanoslots allow sufficient absorption due to the propagating SPPs. With the combined advantages, almost 100% of light is absorbed by a very thin gold film in the visible range, and 73% in the whole considered range of 400-1170 nm, superior to the nanocone cell based on localized SPPs, let alone the nanowire-based and planar counterparts. Therefore, much better photovoltaic conversion performance is achieved with short-circuit current density of 0.74 mA/cm(2) and open-circuit voltage of 0.41 V. This work confirms the superiority of non-radiative decay of propagating SPPs to the localized SPPs in terms of generation of hot carriers, providing a promising way of extracting electrons in metal into photocurrent.

    We demonstrate single mode-splitting in two types of microring resonators with Bragg gratings. In the first device type, gratings are periodically embedded to the inner wall of the microring resonator. By adjusting the reflection coefficient of the grating and the self-coupling coefficient between the waveguide and microring, experimental results show that the distance between the splitting dips can vary from 0 to more than 1 nm. In the second device type, Bragg gratings break into two identical parts with a pi phase shift between them. The center peak in the mode-splitting spectrum has a full-width at half-maximum of 0.1 nm. The spectra can also be a Fano-type transmission, when the phase shift deviates from pi.

    We report the preparation of a kind of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) tags and explore their applications in multifunctional optical imaging of cancer cells. The proposed nanoparticles (SERS tags) are prepared by connecting dye molecules directly onto the surfaces of gold nanorods through Au-S or Au-N interactions. The dye molecules are used as Raman reporters, while gold nanorods are used as enhanced materials due to their localized surface plasmon resonance effect. Multilayered polymers are further coated onto the surfaces of the nanoparticles to reach better stability and biocompatibility. Gold nanorods with different aspect ratios and different dye molecules conjugated are compared in order to achieve the diversity of SERS tags and find out the optimized condition of SERS tags with the highest signal intensity. Our experiments show that the resulting nanoparticles, which are uptaken by cancer cells, can provide not only dark field cells images but also multiplexing SERS images.

    An extended finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with inclusion of material dispersion for the full-vectorial analysis of photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) is presented in this paper. In order for this extended FDTD method to obtain a fast convergence and high accuracy, a constitutive-parameter averaging technique is employed. Numerical results for a typical PCF verify the validity of the extended FDTD method. With this FDTD mode solver, a new birefringent PCF is also investigated, and interesting results are obtained in this paper.

    This letter presents the design and fabrication of an optical mixer based on SU8 polymer for the demodulation of polarization division multiplexed-quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals. The mixer consists of two novel polarization beam splitters (PBSs) and two 4 × 4 multimode interference (MMI) couplers. It is the first polymer-based optical mixer incorporated with PDM functionality. The experimental results show good performances of the mixer.

    Abstract [en]

    Enhancement of resonant tunnelling of a wide beam through vertical subwavelength slow-light photonic-crystal waveguides (SPCWs) is considered. An assistant horizontal SPCW with a thin side wall, whose guided modes have small propagation constants, is used as an input coupler for the vertical SPCW, and the two SPCWs form a compact composite structure to enhance drastically the resonant tunnelling. An incident wide beam can excite strongly the guided modes of the horizontal SPCW, and then resonantly tunnels through the vertical SPCW efficiently. To further improve the resonant tunnelling of a wide beam, a periodic array of vertical SPCWs (with a horizontal SPCW as an input coupler) is also investigated. With this periodic structure, a wide beam can be transmitted nearly completely. When a wide beam tunnels through the vertical SPCWs efficiently, the excited fields inside the SPCWs are very strong.

    Abstract [en]

    It is found that the electric field can be enhanced strongly inside a permittivity-near-zero object in free space, when the transverse cross section of the object is small and the length along the propagation direction of the incident wave is large enough as compared with the wavelength. The physical mechanism is explained in details. The incident electromagnetic energy can only flow almost normally through the outer surface into or out of the permittivity-near-zero object, which leads to large energy stream density and then strong electric field inside the object. Meanwhile, the magnetic field inside the permittivity-near-zero object may be smaller than that of the incident wave, which is also helpful for enhancing the electric field. Two permittivity-near-zero objects of simple shapes, namely, a thin cylindrical shell and a long thin rectangular bar, are chosen for numerical illustration. The enhancement of the electric field becomes stronger when the permittivity-near-zero object becomes thinner. The physical mechanism of the field enhancement is completely different from the plasmonic resonance enhancement at a metal surface.

    Abstract [en]

    An electromagnetic energy squeezing mechanism is proposed based on the special properties of permeability-near-zero metamaterials. It is found that nearly no energy stream can enter a simply connected conventional dielectric material positioned inside a permeability-near-zero material. When the dielectric domain is shaped as a split ring (with a gap opened) surrounding a source, the electromagnetic energy generated by the source is forced to propagate through the gap. When the gap is narrow, the energy stream density becomes very large and makes the magnetic field enhanced drastically in the gap. The narrow gap can be long and bended. This provides us a method to obtain strong magnetic field without using resonance enhancement.

    Passband broadening of an AWG (array waveguide grating) demultiplexer with an MMI (multimode interference) coupler connected at the end of a tapered input waveguide is considered. An explicit formula based on the field propagation of an approximate Hermit-Gaussian beam is used to calculate quickly and reliably the spectral response of the AWG demultiplexer. The widths of the input waveguide, the output waveguides and the MMI coupler are optimized. The optimal design is verified with the experimental measurement.

    Electromagnetic invisible devices usually designed by transformation optics are rather complicated in material parameters and not suitable for general applications. Recently, a topology optimized cloak based on level-set method was proposed to realize nearly perfect cloaking [Fujii, Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 251106 (2013)]. In this work, we experimentally implemented this idea and fabricated a unidirectional cloak with a relative large invisible region made of single dielectric material. Good cloaking performance was verified through measurement which consists very well with numerical simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this optimization method are also discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    We propose a general method, known as acoustic surface transformation (AST), to design novel acoustic devices and study the realization of such devices by using naturally available materials in broadband acoustic frequencies. All devices designed by AST only need one anisotropic homogeneous acoustic-null material (ANM). We design the ANM by exploiting natural material-based metal-fluid structures and verify that by numerical simulation. Unlike traditional methods, no complicated mathematical calculations are needed. We only need to design the geometrical shapes of the input and output surfaces of the devices. The proposed method will pave a new road for future acoustic design.

    We present a fast hyperspectral line-scan fluorescence imaging system to verify the feasibility of quantitative fluorescence authentication of powders. Vanillin, which is restricted for use in milk powder, especially in milk powder for infants, is mixed with milk powder in different mass concentrations (5%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, and 90%). Mixed powders are located on a motorized linear stage. A 405 nm line laser is utilized to excite the fluorescence of the sample. Based on galvo scanning, we can generate a laser line with high spatial resolution and high-intensity density on the samples. An imaging spectrometer with a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera as detector is built. The spectral range of the spectrometer is 365-810 nm, with about 1 nm spectral resolution. One snapshot of the CMOS can acquire the fluorescent spatial and spectral information of a line region in 100 ms. By scanning the motorized linear stage, we obtain the fluorescence hypercube of the sample. A 100 x 1926 x 1216 hypercube, which covers an area of 15 mm x 5 mm, is obtained in 50 s. The imaging speed can be enhanced further by increasing the intensity of the excitation laser and the sensitivity of the area camera. Fully constrained least squares, a linear spectral mixture analysis, is utilized to analyze the hypercube obtained by our homemade imaging spectrometer, thus obtaining the pixel concentration of vanillin in each mixed powder. Linear regression analysis is used for the pixel concentration and mass concentration of vanillin. A linear relationship with coefficient of determination le equal to one is observed, which demonstrates the capability of fluorescence hyperspectral quantitative analysis in powders.

    Highly mono-dispersed silica microspheres are fabricated and assembled by a force packing method to form opals with large domain sizes. The opals are then infiltrated with gold by electroplating technique. The SEM images showed the gold nanoparticles could be directly deposited on the surface of silica spheres and the voids among the silica spheres in the opaline structure. The optical properties of the infiltrated opals in the visible range are studied in detail. The gold infiltrated silica opals could provide a simple way to tune the opal properties through controlling the ration of gold in the silica opal.

    Structure with non-negative effective permittivities in the radial and tangential directions can also perform far-field imaging beyond the diffraction limit since the dispersion curves can be long and flat enough and utilized to transfer the subwavelength information. Thus we propose an impedance-mismatched hyperlens with such a dispersion curve and increasing thicknesses (from the innermost layer to the outermost) to reduce reflection losses due to the impedance difference between the nearby layer pairs. Compared with the hyperlens with same thickness for each period, the resolution ability of the hyperlens with varying thicknesses can be improved dramatically, while the image intensity is weaker. Furthermore, the influence of the layer number on the imaging is also analyzed to improve the performance of the system and an improved hyperlens with repeated thickness setting is also utilized to increase the intensity of the magnified image.

    Gold-nanoparticles can be used as a robust tool for bio-sensing based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Both local refractive index change and self-assembly of the nanoparticles can lead to some spectral shifts of the LSPR extinction peak. Using different mechanisms of LSPR peak shifts, two types of transducers are set up to detect the streptavidin concentration through the specific recognition with biotin moleculars, which are conjugated to gold-nanoparticles. One is based on the self-assembly of gold-nanoparticles in Solution, and the other is based on the increase of the local refractive index near the surface of the immobilized gold-nanoparticles after streptavidin-biotin binding. The sensitivity and efficiency of the two transducers are compared. Gold-nano particles are functionalized with polyelectrolyte, which can improve significantly the stability of the nanoparticles and reduce the unspecific binding of streptavidin. Polyelectrolyte functionalization also provides a simple way to conjugate gold-nanoparticles with charged molecules such as biotin and BSA-biotin.

    We report a sensitive nanosensor based on a micro-fluidic chip and nanoparticles to detect low concentrations of DNA. The emission of CdSe/ZnS-QDs linked with single strand DNAs was quenched by gold nanoparticles linked with the complementary sequences after hybridization. Sensitively detected signal of DNA was obtained from a 100 mu m capillary.

    Gold nanorods (GNRs) with different localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peaks and different thicknesses of polymer-coating were synthesized to validate that the distinct GNR-based quenching process of quantum dot (QD) emission follows the metal surface energy transfer theory. The quenching efficiency is directly related to the spectral overlap of GNR-LSPR absorption and QD-emission, as well as the separation distance between the two nanoparticles. GNRs are advantageous for DNA conjugation, and the high efficiency of GNR-QD quenching system was utilized for sensitive DNA detection.

    A new mechanism for realizing negative permeability with a three-level ladder-type atomic (or molecular) system at microwave frequency is suggested. The explicit expressions for the magnetic permeability of both steady and transient cases are presented. Compared with the previous schemes to realize negative permeability within the framework of classical electromagnetic theory, the most remarkable feature in the present mechanism is that it can realize the isotropic material with negative permeability. Such a permeability can be controllably manipulated by external coupling fields and could lead to potential applications in quantum optical devices.
