    Abstract [en]

This project concerns the most centrally located and spatially complex area in central Stockholm. It is located directly to the west of the internationally well-known Stockholm City area developed in the 1950s and 1960s. Presently significant reconstruction of the central station and its track areas is under way which will also open up a large new development area in one of the most attractive locations in Stockholm. For this project Spacescape, an architectural office specializing in analysis of urban space and urban development projects in relation to urban life qualities such as, attractiveness, public safety and retail support formed an integrated consultancy group together with architects and landscape architects, delivering evaluation and design support to the project. This concerned both an analysis of the current status of the area, including the spatially complex interior of the central station, as well as support and evaluation of the different stages in the proposal. The themes analysed included spatial capital (accessibility to the rest of the city, especially for people working and living in the city), pedestrian flows, wayfinding, recreational qualities and public safety. Through continuous analyses during the design process Spacescape were able to support the project in a direction providing greater benefits in these areas and telling images show how the new proposal could create a much better outcome than the current one.

Architectural Knowledge and Complex Urban Space: Analysis of Five Proposals for Slussen in Stockholm2010In: Journal of Space Syntax, ISSN 2044-7507, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 177-198Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents, compares and evaluates five design proposals for remodelling the famous, or as some would say infamous, Slussen transport interchange in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Slussen is strategically located where the locks between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea meet the land bridge between northern and southern Sweden. It is now a major hub for Stockholm's road, bus, boat, rail and underground transport systems, which in 1935 was redesigned as integrated transport node in the modernist style. This has now become so physically deteriorated and obsolete that a series of proposals were put forward during the opening years of the new millennium for its complete remodelling. As a contribution to that exercise, the urban design practice Spacescape was commissioned to analyse and evaluate the likely performance of the various regeneration proposals for Slussen, using methodologies based on space syntax theory and other methods, in order to predict the likely outcome of each proposal on Stockhlom's urban life. In what follows, projects by Atelier Nouvel and Habiter Autrement, Big, Foster and Partners and Berg, Nyréns and finally Wingårdh and Tema have been compared and evaluated in the light of the goals set out in Stockholm's comprehensive city plan.

Network buzz: conception and geometry of networks in geography, architecture and sociology2013In: Proceeding - 9th International Space Syntax Symposium / [ed] Kim, Y., Park, H. and Seo,K., Sejong University Press , 2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of networks has in the recent decade rapidly risen to a top position in a long series of disciplines. Given that network is a key concept in space syntax theory and methodology, this paper investigates the origins and later development of network analysis in the adjacent fields of sociologyand geography, not least since networks often are seen as a language that can connect and translate between systems and phenomena addressed in different disciplines. The overarching aim in the paper is to contribute to a more precise understanding of what network concept actually is in use in space syntax and, in extension, what this particular version has to offer the larger and more established disciplines of sociology and geography.

In sociology we find an initial discourse on networks already in Georg Simmel that to a certain degreechallenged the conception of sociology strongly promoted by the more powerful Émile Durkheim, but was later lost. The concept of networks, however, remerged, not least in the work of John Scott that made direct references to the emergence of network analysis in geography. In geography we find networks to be an intrinsic part of the quantitative revolution in the 1950s and 60s, heralded by Peter Haggett and others, where networks were promoted as an alternative to the regional approach in geography. This opens for an exciting vista of geometric foundations of geography, with pertinent repercussions also for architecture.

However, this is clearly to move between distinctly different conceptions of networks; between what we can call social, physical, and cognitive networks. With this distinction in mind, there is a possibility to more precisely position networks as conceptualised in space syntax. Socially, networks in space syntax are representations of, what Durkheim referred to as, social morphology, which distinctly can never reach beyond the threshold of sociology but deals with “material substratum of society”, which thereby offers a distinct identity and limit to the field of space syntax. Geographically, space syntax thus represents a peculiar form of network analysis demarcated by the physical fact of the city. Such ontology of ‘regional networks’ (cf. Jessop) is not unusual in geography, but fundamentally alien to the contemporary concept of networks found within sociology, emphasizing networks as an ontological alternative to such region-thinking (Latour, Scott). Finally, and possibly most originally, representations of networks in space syntax seem to develop a particular strand of advanced cognitive geometry that extends and complements the aims of behavioural and cognitive geography.

    Abstract [en]

The project aims to construct a new hybrid building in Sorunda, located in northwestern Nynäshamn, with improved conditions for more efficient operations and an enhanced quality of life between emergencies. The building will house a fire station and include additional facilities such as a sports hall, a gym, a café, and a larger residential area within the fire station. The project also intends to emphasize the central location of the fire station in the community, situated between the historically significant focal point, the church, and the currently prominent meeting place, the Coop store with a pharmacy, postal services, and other important services. The fire station aims to serve as a gathering place in Sorunda, forming a clear central axis through the community with three emphasized institutions. The communal part of the hybrid programme, which can also be utilized by the local residents, consists of communal meeting and event spaces, in addition to the gym, café, and sports hall, which also address the needs of the nearby school.

DELTΔ: exploring the fragility of perception through the medium of light.2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this piece, I have looked to use art in an attempt to explore a known phenomenon of the visual system: in this case, chromatic adaptation. The name delta in this sense has two meanings. The first is that of the mathematical symbol Δ used to represent change. This refers to not only the changing light in the art piece but the hopeful change in the viewer as they walk away questioning what it is they saw and what they see. The second refers to the landmass that occurs when a flowing body of water meets a still one, such as a river into an ocean. Through this process it has become evident that the knowledge gained is not as important as the questions asked; I now stand on the last bit of dry land before wading into the endless ocean of questions. The focus of this work has been on experience, perception, and presence. It has become clear that, while a viewer may not see change, they do feel that change. The question then becomes how do we become more attuned and adept at recognizing these feelings, what are the implications of doing so, and why does that even matter.

TOTEN. A lighting installation, an ode to rain2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In a society where people are always making plans and running in-between places, uncontrollable scenarios, such as rain, can be read as mere obstacles to the much acclaimed ‘routine’. With a strong appreciation for unexpected events, I instead want to propose a solution to make people approach rain in a more curious way, building for it a celebrative setting. A path of analysis, research, and experimental testing led to the design of a possible transformation of a rainwater harvesting system into a lighting installation. Considering the current climate change conditions, and the severe drought situations in some areas, rain has to be interpreted today not just as a poetic phenomenon, but also as a necessary and primary resource.  In TOTEN, daylight and artificial light are combined in a dynamic storyline, with the goal to emphasize the presence or the lack of rain and to make people gain insight about the rainfall trend. While an optical illusion and colors are asked to achieve a communicative and attractive condition, the structure wants to be clean and easily affordable. Reminiscent of a totemic sculpture, TOTEN appears, in the results, as a symbolic place where light and water use their liquid shapes to tell stories.

Positioning Analysis: social structures in configurative modelling2007In: Proceedings of the Sixth International Space Syntax Symposium / [ed] Ayse Sema Kubat, Özhan Ertekin, Yasemin İnce Güney, Engin Eyüboğlou, Istanbul: ITU Faculty of Architecture , 2007, p. 069:1-069:14Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The most common way to model space syntax is to use an even distribution of lines or isovists. In positioning analysis, an uneven distribution of isovists is used in order to integrate social structures into the spatial analysis. These models can be used to analyse spaces highly influenced by social or cultural organisations. In offices, organisational structures can produce a constant bias in patterns of, for example, face-to-face interaction. Furthermore, labelling space according to organisational structure has sometimes been found to be as powerful a barrier as physical walls. In this study, these ‘constant biases’ are treated as being more important as origins rather than as mere biases. Positioning analysis is based on examination of spatial configuration of selected positions that enable these biases to be turned into parts of the analytic model. The selected positions should represent the organised entity of interest and form a subset within the general integration model. This set of points can be analysed configurationally through their spatial relationships, which can then be used together with traditional space syntax models. Thus the subset is described both from internal and external relationships, a fruitful approach in many cases. Applying this methodology when analysing face-to-face interaction in offices has provided strong correlations, which have produced two interesting results: face-to-face interaction correlates both with subsets of spatial distribution and with the integration patterns within the subset. At the same time, our analyses of how department stores and libraries spatially organise commodities and categories provide further support for how an analysis of spatial positioning answers key spatial strategy questions. Brands, types, and other categories position themselves in relation to one another as well as to a general integration and control patterns using modulations of a small set of spatial relations. Basing the configurative models on spatial relations of categories rather than on general spatial relations of an evenly distributed grid provides remarkably clear information. These findings are used to argue for working with positioning analysis parallel to traditional space syntax analysis, especially regarding examining spaces that are highly influenced by social or cultural organisation, such as offices, department stores, libraries, and museums.

A New Song for Ourselves: Contributions of Gary Snyder’s Poetics of Place to Current Ecopoetics2020In: Ecocene: Cappadocia Journal of Environmental Humanities, ISSN 2717-8943, Vol. 1, no 2, p. 32-46Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

I propose that Gary Snyder’s bioregional project can contribute to recent ecopoetic thought with its argument for poetry as embodied practice and with its definition of community as place-based, transnational, and multi-species. I start by showing continuities between bioregionalism and ecocriticism with the concept of place. I then turn to Snyder’s conceptualization of place as a dialectics between the biotic and sociopolitical dimensions. For Snyder poetry is a situated and embodied practice of investigation and creation of place. It therefore relates with recent discussions on ecopoetics as a critical and poetic practice extended to ecologically oriented forms of community action and activism (Hume and Osborne 2018,2). As an example of how current ecopoetry practices a poetics of place I briefly discuss Allison Cobb’s Plastic: An Autobiography(2015).

A Nova Poética da natureza de Gary Snyder: budismo e ecocrítica na sua obra2013Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents the work of the poet Gary Snyder (1930) to the Portuguese academia in order to clearly state its original and unique place among North-American poetry. It is divided in three chapters that determine the three different grounds of the author’s syncretism. The first chapter contextualizes Snyder’s work in the history of literary representations of nature. In rupture with the Pastoral literary mode it crystallizes a moment of passing between nature writing and environmental writing. The second chapter discusses the Buddhist elements present in Snyder’s work and stresses the importance of the interrelation between mind and nature. By stating the equivalence between the Buddhist concept of interdependence and ecosystems processes, the poems assume certain formal characteristics that are presented. Finally, the third chapter defines the relation between geographical places and Snyder’s poems. The formal aspects of the author’s poetry reflect Snyder’s notion of the poet as a shaman and its clarification allows for the discussion of the author’s statement of language as a wild ecosystem. Snyder’s syncretism is his most profound, original and long lasting influence in North-American poetry. It extends its influence to environmental ethics, the presence of Buddhism in North-America and the recovery of Native American Myths and lore. It does so in the context of a social, political, poetic, religious and environmental revolution that intends to create a new (and old) place for humans with nature.

Atmospheric and geological entanglements: north american ecopoetry and the anthropocene2020Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Atmospheric and Geological Entanglements is a study of contemporary North American ecopoetry, a poetry which is characterized by a negotiation or subversion of established cultural representations of nature, and by a re-deployment of poetic forms such as lyrical poetry, pastoral and elegy. The studied poets experiment with form and question well-established categories such as human and nature, instead emphasizing connections between the human, other organisms, and inorganic matter. Their poetry—one of several results of their artistic and critical practice, or poetics—thus highlights entanglements of various kinds and draws attention to the world as varied, complex and interconnected. The study has a specific focus on how twentieth-century ecopoetry relates to two material and aesthetic dimensions of the Anthropocene: the atmospheric and the geological. Geological imagery has been dominant in discussions about and in the Anthropocene, but ecopoetry emphasizes song, breathing and air as liberating atmospheric figures for communication and relationships, and for thinking with others and the planet.

Ecopoetry: Overcoming Anthropocene melancholia in the work of Juliana Spahr and Allison Cobb2020In: Kulturella perspektiv - Svensk etnologisk tidskrift, ISSN 1102-7908, no 3, p. 35-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally, elegy moves from loss to consolation by framing death within larger regenerative cycles of nature. But in the current time of ecological dis- ruption, nature as regeneration is no longer availa- ble, and this absence hinders the process of mourn- ing, not allowing consolation. In parallel, the large scale of the environmental crisis creates a sense of futility of action. Both the inability to overcome mourning and the lack of will to act for environ- mental change create a permanent state of grief that Juliana Spahr, Joshua Clover and Allison Cobb term West Melancholia. How can ecopoetry overcome the process of mourning for lost ecosys- tems and species, and instead contribute to action? I propose that in contemporary North-American ecopoetry, consolation is given by poetic research in language and activist engagement. Spahr’s "Gentle Now, Don’t Add to Heartache" (2011) and Misan- thropocene: 24 Theses (2014), co-authored with Clover, tie grief to the failure of inherited models of representing nature and instead suggest consolation in ecopoetry as activist practice. Cobb’s After We All Died (2016) grounds consolation in a practice of starting from failure to researching language for modes of overcoming grief. I discuss these works to uncover the poets’ proposals of overcoming melan- cholia through exploration of language and engaged activist writing.

Poetry and Science Fiction: – Richard Brautigan’s poem “All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace” as an ecological dystopia2016In: Messengers From The Stars, ISSN 2183-7465, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I argue that Richard Brautigan’s poem “All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace” is an ecological dystopia in the science fiction genre. Brautigan’s poem creates a post-pastoral image of a cybernetic ecology monitored and controlled by machines. The poem’s internal structure and tone provide an ironic commentary to its theme of a utopian project, highlighting its internal conflicts and showing its impossibility. I argue, therefore, that the poem is a critique of the ecological utopias of the 60s and can be read accordingly.

textos pauis – respiração não texto2023In: Animalia Vegetalia Mineralia. Revista de Ecomedia e estudos Ecocríticos, ISSN 2183-265X, no XIIArticle in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [en]

In December 2001, three months after the attacks on the World Trade Centre (WTC) on 11th September, Don DeLillo wrote that the real target of the terrorists was “the high gloss of [US] modernity … technology … foreign policy … It was the power of American culture to penetrate every wall, home, life, and mind” (DeLillo 2001, 34). Let us begin this introduction by focusing on the words “wall[s] and home[s]” used by DeLillo. In light of US hegemony, how should we re-think and revisit notions of home and its (linguistic and physical) boundaries? How can we measure the extent of a movement that reaches “every wall, home, life, and mind”?

    Abstract [en]

This theme was defined in the winter of 2019, when no one predicted the pandemic crisis caused by COVID-19, which brought other dimensions and relevance to questions of inhabiting and uninhabiting spaces. At the time, there were other issues whose analysis seemed to be urgent: (1) gentrification and touristization of historical and environmentally protected sites; (2) occupation movements of uninhabited spaces; (3) territorial uprooting or intermittent rootedness, both resulting from mass human and cultural mobility, sometimes fostered by technological development and the globalization of the economy, sometimes determined by war, misery and hunger; (4) new (?) forms of ruralization or de-ruralization of regions with accentuated histories of population desertification. These processes are driven by the seduction of the economic and socio-cultural dynamism of cities, as well as by the search for alternative and more environmentally sustainable ways of re-inhabiting territories; (5)climate change, catastrophes, and processes of resettlement and regeneration; (6) and, among others, the inhabitation of space by art and art as an inhabited space. We therefore invited critical, theoretical-conceptual and artistic reflections on these topics, both in the current context of the Covid19 pandemic as in other contexts and approaches for the number5 of T RANSLOCAL-ContemporaryLocalandUrbanCultures.

    Abstract [en]

The works here analyzed show the ocean as a contested site of cultural production. We focus on the different forms in which oceanic ecopoetics surfaces submersed bodies and female voices; dissolves the “Portuguese sea” exposing how it has been storied; (em)braces the waves, attempting to shape other forms of language through listening and beckoning to aquatic vital forms and movements; and suggests re-compositions that engage with liquid toxicity.

This discussion is structured to highlight the different strategies of this ecopoetics. We analyze formal strategies in the works of Brazilian poets Mar Becker, Júlia Hansen, Letícia Novaes (Letrux), Ana Martins Marques, Beatriz RGB and Nina Rizzi and Portuguese poets Sophia de Mello Breyner- Fiama Hasse Pais Brandão, Patrícia Lino and Inês Francisco Jacob, establishing formal connections and proximities between them.

    Abstract [en]

My degree project has been about converting an existing old industrial building into a youth centre. The buildings core focus is culture together with activity and learning. I wanted to use as much material as possible from the old building. Exterior walls and flooring are left almost untouched while a big part of the buildings construction with roof is changed. I made a new roof that could be used as a park. The building is situated close to the city centre of Eskilstuna, aswell as close to the southern suburbs where problems with segregation is an issue. My vision with Strömbrytaren was to make it a social hub, where youth from different backgrounds would meet and socialize.

Nya Östertälje station. - För en växande stad.2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Östertälje is a growing area with a lot of potential to develop into an attractive district in Södertälje. This is because it already has very many who use Östertälje station. Has good connections with Stockholm, 36 minutes commuter train ride. Located close to nature and greenery, lanes along the canal where it is planned to build 500 homes.

My intention is to meet this growing area with a new train station / travel center that will be able to live up to the number of people who in the future will pass Östertälje station. A travel center so that both young people and children have a place to feel identified with. A place for both younger and adults to socialize in a fun way.

A hub for smooth travel. Everything that is necessary before, during and after your trip must be easily accessible. No dark passages or tunnels that make people feel insecure. It should be connected to light, plants and open areas. Have dual use evenings / weekends. It could for example be turned into a culture exhibition, art gallery, gym, or dance hall.

Undecided dreams: France in the Antarctic, 1840-20212021In: Polar Record, ISSN 0032-2474, E-ISSN 1475-3057, Vol. 57, article id e32Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper traces France's role in the Antarctic from 1840, when explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville discovered the slice of the white continent he named Terre Adelie, to the present day. Since World War II, Terre Adelie has been the site of a host of performances of sovereignty: the French have built bases, drawn maps, conducted scientific investigations and erected plaques. But France's commitment to Terre Adelie has been tested and has fallen into crisis several times. The history of France in Antarctica is a tale of ambition, ambivalence, trade-offs and political strategy. This paper aims to elucidate this story, focusing on the concept of sovereignty and the nexus of scientific and political interests. I argue that France's relationship with the Antarctic has been characterised by continual tension, by peaks and troughs and by brinkmanship on the part of actors with their own stakes. While there is broad agreement that Terre Adelie serves a fundamental national interest, I show that France's ambitions on the white continent are far from decided. With its focus on France, which has largely been left out of the growing body of literature on the Antarctic, this paper contributes to building a robust historical understanding of Antarctic claims.

The Importance of Communication Design in the Process of Disseminating Community Practices in Social Neighbourhoods: The Balteiro2023In: Comunicacao e Sociedade, ISSN 1645-2089, Vol. 43, article id e023010Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to demonstrate how research in communication design can contribute to disseminating community practices in economically disadvantaged contexts, such as in social housing neighbourhoods. This study stems from the ECHO research project, where the main mission is to understand and document two self-initiated community practices in the social housing neighbourhood of Balteiro, in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, to disseminate them and foster their replication in similar social contexts. It begins with a literature review on the role of design on behalf of communities, focusing, in particular, on the concepts of social design and universal design, which substantiate the relevance and pertinence of the issue under study. Then, it describes the case study of Balteiro. It presents the methodologies adopted in this research, namely the interviews conducted to learn about the history of the two community practices. This provided the basis for developing a preliminary study for an online platform and a series of documentary films. This study proved the importance of involving designers in this dissemination process through multidisciplinary teams. The research work in the field should be close to the community, the institutions and the different social actors involved to understand the complexity of the study context and define how design should operate. The empirical experience from this study has shown that work in the social area should be developed locally, focused on small communities or informal organisations, and aware that results are achieved slowly and gradually.

Light as a Tool for Generating Identity: Lighting proposal for part of Islamic Cairo, Egypt2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Each city has a unique image and special things to offer to citizens and visitors. It is

this unique image that differentiate between the different cities. The uniqueness of

the image of the city is derived from the urban identity of the city and its public

spaces. The purpose of this thesis is to define what are the factors that contribute in

defining space identity which were found to be the physical stationary structure, the

users and their interaction with the space which result in creating memories and

experience and the history of the space.

Based on this definition a connection is made to define how can urban lighting

contribute in fulfilling those factors This connection is made through the study of

urban lighting techniques, the different approaches of lighting masterplan for three

cities and users perception of the space aiming to reach a final goal of a conceptual

lighting proposal for Al-Moez Ldin Allah street which is part of Islamic Cairo in Egypt.

Al-Moez street is considered a landmark and a touristic space in Cairo because it is

rich with heritage landmarks and amazing medieval architecture. The street is not

only considered a touristic space, but it is also used by locals and a lot of Egyptians

already are emotionally attached to the space.

Finally, a discussion part is following that aim to reflect on the steps taken to

approach the goal of this thesis and evaluate the lighting proposal based on the

vision of this thesis, and it shows that keeping users as the first priority in the design

process will result in the most efficient lighting proposal.

    Abstract [en]

“Jarðnæði; Tranquil Terra” is a meditation on the relationship between the dwelling and the dramatic ever-changing landscapes of the rural Icelandic countryside. The project is anchored in a place with a long and complex history and with a profound relationship with its landscapes - a place of wandering churches, lifesaving shipwrecks, growing houses, teeth in the ground, paths lined with crosses to protect against the ghosts and other dark creatures. It is a place where everything is vibrant, alive and has a story to tell. In the journey to the Tranquil Terra I navigated by means of cartography and critical fiction in search of ways to rethink the Icelandic architectural heritage beyond the nature-culture divide.

SUSTAINABLE  HERITAGE LIGHTING DESIGN WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research aims to explore the effective utilization of drone technology for visually narrating a story. By analyzing lighting techniques and design strategies, insights will be provided into lighting practices that address the current energy and climate crisis. Emphasis will be placed on sustainable lighting practices that seek to minimize energy consumption while maximizing visual impact. The proposed lighting design at Jatayu Earth Center (JEC) aligns with sustainable development goals, promoting sustainable tourism, job opportunities, and local culture. A combination of drone technology and solar-chargeable batteries addresses the need for affordable, reliable, and modern energy access. This research contributes to the discourse on sustainable approaches to illuminating heritage architecture, exploring the intersection of art, heritage, and responsible energy practices. The successful implementation and marketing of the lighting design at JEC can have a significant impact on the Indian tourism industry, serving as inspiration for similar eco-tourism projects in the region and stimulating the local economy.
