Abstract [en]

Strongly enhanced backward stimulated polariton scattering (BSPS) is demonstrated in periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (KTP) crystals with a high power-conversion efficiency up to 70%. We study the physical mechanism of such counter-propagating parametric interaction with phonon-polaritons in χ(2) modulated structures. BSPS is a three-wave mixing that is distinguished from backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS), while a strong absorption at large polariton wave-vectors can still make BSPS display certain characteristics of BSRS such as self-compression of the Stokes pulse. We also compare BSPS with counter-propagating parametric oscillation in the near- and mid-infrared range, providing an estimation of the fabrication error margin to expect the outcome of their competition in the same device.

Abstract [en]

We report suppression of forward stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) in chi((2)) structured media. Periodic poling in KTiOPO4 (KTP) leads to the destructive interference of phonon-polariton waves, which is responsible for the dependence of the SPS threshold on the poling period. This was confirmed by comparing the SPS thresholds in periodically-poled KTP (PPKTP) crystals with different poling periods. Further confirming the physical picture, we studied the changes in the Stokes power distribution as a function of the rotation angle of the PPKTP crystal.

Abstract [en]

Nonlinear optics has been enabled by the invention of the laser 50 years ago, and since then both technologies evolved together complementing and enabling each other. In this paper we attempt to briefly overview the historic development of second-order nonlinear materials and try to discern the trends which might dominate developments in the future. The advent of methods of quasi-phase matching and added degrees of freedom in managing three-wave mixing processes pushed the field of nonlinear optics into the realm of engineering. This trend, we believe will continue in the future. In this text we give a short description of design principles of one-dimensional and two-dimensional quasi-phase matched structures and emphasize the increased functionality afforded by such structures. We also overview the nonlinear media where engineering of nonlinear interactions has been demonstrated with the primary focus on ferroelectric and semiconductor nonlinear crystals.

Abstract [en]

One of the unique features of mirrorless optical parametric oscillators based on counterpropagating three-wave interactions is the narrow spectral width of the wave generated in the backward direction. In this work, we investigate experimentally and numerically the influence that a strong phase modulation in the pump has on the spectral bandwidths of the parametric waves and on the efficiency of the nonlinear interaction. The effects of group-velocity mismatch and group-velocity dispersion are elucidated. In particular, it is shown that the substantial increase in temporal coherence of the backward-generated wave can be obtained even for pumping with a temporally incoherent pump. A configuration of a mirrorless optical parametric oscillator is proposed where this gain in spectral coherence is maximized without a penalty in conversion efficiency by employing group-velocity matching of the pump and the forward-generated parametric wave.

Abstract [en]

Distributed positive feedback established by a counterpropagating three-wave mixing process in a submicrometer structured second-order nonlinear medium leads to mirrorless parametric oscillation with unusual spectral properties. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the phase modulation of the pump is coherently transferred to the co-propagating parametric wave, while the counterpropagating wave retains a narrow bandwidth and high coherence. The main mechanisms responsible for these properties are the maximized convective separation between the counterpropagating waves and the associated phase-locking between the pump and the co-propagating parametric wave. This suggests that mirrorless optical parametric oscillators can be pumped with incoherent light and still generate highly coherent backward-propagating radiation.
