Abstract [en]

Single-track line railway operations are complex due to their reliance on crossings, where trains must pass at specific locations within constrained time windows. Capacity utilisation can be assessed using different methods, but variations in how crossings and operational dependencies are accounted for may lead to differing results. This study analyses the impact of including crossing stations in capacity utilisation assessments and examines the effect of enhanced interlocking functionality, specifically simultaneous entry. Through a case study, we explore how different methods account for crossing station operations and thus influence capacity estimates. The results highlight the importance of infrastructure design and properly accounting for crossing station aspects, as well as the marginal benefits of simultaneous entry depending on the timetable. These insights contribute to an improved single-track line capacity analysis, leading to more informed railway planning and investment decisions.

Abstract [en]

The railway transport system has seen an increasing demand in recent years, while delays and missed punctuality goals continue to be problems in many countries. To improve punctuality, the amount of primary delays needs to be decreased, and knowledge of the shares of the different types of delay – entry, run, and dwell – is important to identify the most efficient countermeasures. This paper investigates the punctuality in the three Swedish metropolitan regions around Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, applying Circumscribed Central Composite Design in the calibration of a macroscopic simulation tool. The results show that the ratio of primary to secondary delays varied from 1:1.8 to 1:3.8 between the geographical regions, and that the mix of primary entry, run, and dwell delays can vary substantially between regions. In all cases, the primary delays need to decrease by well over to reach the goal of punctuality, highlighting the importance of reducing primary dwell delays to improve punctuality. For simulation purposes, our results highlight that large networks require careful calibration, as key parameters and inputs vary significantly between different parts of the network. Future work includes experimenting with iterated calibration runs, modelling the prediction error between simulated and observed punctuality, simulating a larger network while allowing for regional differences in input settings and distributions, investigating the potential relationship between capacity utilisation and the occurrence of secondary delays, and exploring the possibility of automating the calibration process.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Introduktion

( TITLE ( *security OR threat* OR *attack* OR antagonist* OR sabotage* OR terroris* OR malicious OR piracy ) AND TITLE ( transport* OR road* OR rail* OR aviation OR maritime OR vehicle* ) AND TITLE ( preparedness OR readiness OR resilien* OR protect* OR defend* OR defence ) ) AND ( LIMIT-TO ( LANGUAGE , "English" ) )

vilket resulterade i 317 publikationer.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The demand for transportation by railway has never been this high, and still rising. Making space for everyone who wants to use the tracks is a considerable challenge hence it’s important to have a consistent way of measuring the capacity and availability of the tracks in the system (Trafikverket, 2021). Capacity utilization is a general way of talking about the performance of the system. A good understanding of the capacity in strategic railway planning can be a helpful tool for decision support to evaluate the investment impact for a range of options (Liao et al., 2021). Capacity can be seen as a way of measuring how much of a certain infrastructure is used under a predefined amount of time.

In railways, single track lines require more planning details compared to double-track lines. A single-track line section is generally a section of the line with bidirectional traffic where two trains cannot be at the same time, divided by passing loops. In 2022, approximately 80% of the Swedish railway network consisted of single tracks.

Various methods can be used to measure the capacity. The guidelines from the International Union of Railways (UIC) in their capacity leaflet 406 are one of the most widely used methods for capacity calculation and suggests a compression method where, for single tracks, the line is divided into sections and then the occupation time for each train between the passing loops is compressed and measured, in other words, a summary of the total run time. Landex (2009) applies the UIC406 method to a Danish context and adds dummy trains to the timetable to find out by which crossing stations the line should be divided into sections. Jamili (2018) extends the Landex approach but puts focus on the buffer times to find practical capacity.

Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) uses an analytical adaption of the UIC406 compression method to compute the capacity utilization for lines in Sweden including parameters such as number of trains, runtime, time for meetings and time depending on signaling system for critical sections of a line. This means that the calculations are quite general, not considering the order of the trains or where/if crossings occur.

Weik et al. (2020) introduce a Matlab-based model to make timetable-dependent and -independent compression analyses for stations and double tracks. The suggested method is a hybrid simulation-timetable compression framework for capacity analysis based on the UIC 406 method where the analysis is performed on a microscopic level of detail to better account for dependencies between trains. The model uses infrastructure and timetable data imported from RailSys and checks for conflicts between trains assigned to the same block sections.

With this study, we aim to continue developing the model from Weik et al. (2020) and explore the possibility of measuring capacity utilization for single-track sections using the planned timetable with the consideration of planned crossovers at passing loops. The results are compared with the output from the method that Trafikverket uses as well as UIC method. We also study the effect of having simultaneous entry at the passing loop or not.

The model has been modified and given both a more overall compression design compared to the previous one by solving conflicts and compressing all trains at the same time but also more detailed to deal with partial releases of block sections as the train successively releases the block sections after passing by instead of, model-wise, occupying the full block section the whole time making the train crossovers possible in the model. Data is retrieved from Trafikverket’s RailSys model of 2022 as simulation logfiles and infrastructure information.

The preliminary results from the case study so far show that the capacity utilization for the critical section of a single-track line in Sweden is slightly over-estimated by Trafikverket’s estimation using the analytical calculation and slightly underestimated compared to UIC method, in comparison to the timetable-based compression method developed in this work. We can also see the difference in using simultaneous entry at passing loops at single tracks.

Abstract [en]

This deliverable describes the main developments carried out in WP6, with focus on models and algorithms to improve long-term and short-term timetabling of the railway network. The activities in WP6 aim at increasing infrastructure and transport utilisation capacity through optimised and robust timetables, synchronized with rolling stock planning. These objectives have been targeted through

a. The development of advanced algorithms for the generation and adjustment of timetables and rolling stock planning, which will be further developed and completed in WP7

b. The definition a suitable family of use cases, which will be demonstrated in WP7

c. The implementation of specific technical enablers.

Addressed technical enabler and the defined use cases and demonstrators are synthetically reported in the background Section 3 of this document.

All the timetabling and rolling stock planning problems tackled in WP6 require to find good quality solutions fulfilling various physical and logical requirements, and the business rules of the railway infrastructure managers and railway undertakings. As such, they can be viewed as optimization problems, which can be modelled and solved by means of mathematical optimization, an AI discipline which concerns the making of optimal decisions. With few exceptions, the models developed in WP6 are based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming or Constraint Programming, solved then by means of specialized commercial solvers (as CPLEX, or GUROBI), or by ad-hoc heuristic algorithms, such as local search, genetic algorithms, simulated annealing. Mathematical decomposition and graph theory are also exploited to model and solve various problems.

Although the algorithms developed in WP6 are not yet fully completed – they will be in the first year of WP7 – still some interesting and promising conclusions can be drawn. In fact, tests on realistic instances have been performed. It turns out that the developed methods work well for the size and the type of instances for which they are designed. In turn, this implies that we can expect they will tackle the instances arising in the demonstrations of the planned use-cases. Ultimately, this means that in general the approaches will be able to support human planners in their activities, and to automatize segments of the current planning process. Preliminary results show that solutions of high quality can be produced in short computing time. One limit is that, since the algorithms will be completed and demonstrated in WP7, these conclusions are still very preliminary. Also, the solution of full integrated problems appears to be still out of reach, and we need to content ourselves with tackling suitable subproblems. For instance, we can possibly compute an optimal or quasi-optimal timetable for the entire Norwegian network, and subsequently calculate an associated optimal rolling stock rotation, and solve the stabling problem, but we are still far from being able to solve to optimality the three problems jointly.
