Tillämpning av Vision Zero-principer på multimodala gator: konflikter och kompromisser (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

As cities aims at shifting towards sustainable mobility, the coexistence of diverse transportation modes raises challenges when it comes to compromising safety and street-level public transport performance. This thesis explores the conflicts in integrating active mobility and bus service within limited street spaces, with a focus on safety of the urban environment. An analytical framework of best practices in street design is developed through a causal loop diagram modelling the interactions between design elements, as a tool to facilitate a systematic approach to identifying and managing conflicts, and ultimately upon iteration, improving best practice. Through the analysis of two case studies in Stockholm (Sankt Eriksgatan) and Gothenburg (Lindholmsallén), the framework is tested, uncovering patterns and interplays between best practice elements in real-world contexts. Key findings reveal synergies between complementary design elements and the reinforcing mechanism between design decisions that extend beyond the constraints of designated street sections, touching upon the dimensions of linearity and punctuality. The study also highlights the importance of intersections, the opportunities presented by a reduction of car traffic and the potential of "pockets of good provision”. The thesis contributes to existing knowledge by proposing a framework for anticipating and negotiating design conflicts, promoting a more integrated approach among practitioners from different disciplines. It concludes with emphasizing the need for best practices not only in design elements but also in the planning process itself, advocating for a holistic and context-sensitive approach to urban street design.
