Abstract [sv]

Matematikundervisningen i grundskolan innehåller ett flertal utmaningar i olika former för eleverna. Bland dessa utmaningar så finns textuppgifterna, som kräver både att eleverna förstår innehållet i texten och att eleverna ska forma en egen strategi för att lösa dessa. Misslyckas elever med någon av stegen fallerar hela uppgiften. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur högstadieelever tar åt sig informationen i textuppgifter kopplade till funktioner och koordinatsystem samt hur de gör för att lösa dessa. Resultatet visar att det något oftare är en utmaning för eleverna att förstå innehållet i en textuppgift snarare än att hitta en lämplig metod för att lösa den. Detta kan leda till att elever inte klarar av en uppgift för att de inte förstår den eller att eleven visar kunskaper som i ett sammanhang är helt irrelevanta.

Abstract [en]

Text exercises in math education poses two challenges for the students. The first challenge is understanding the contents of the assignment, to know what the assignment wants from the student. Once that obstacle is passed, the next challenge is to come up with a method of solution in order to solve the problem. If any of these steps fails, the solution will likely come out wrong. The purpose of this study is to investigate how students interpret text assignments in math and what methods they use to solve math problems in the functions and coordinates field. The results show that it is slightly more common for the students to misinterpret the contents rather than making wrong calculations. This leads to a situation where the students fail the exercises simply because they do not understand it or that the student show completely irrelevant solutions that do not solve the problem.
