Motivation for Laborations (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The goal with this work was to research how teachers describe the motivation of students in chemistry lessons, especially with a focus on laboratory lessons and open laboratory lessons. The data collection was done with semi structured interviews of four teachers. The Interviews were transcribed and analyzed with an inductive thematic analysis. To compare the results with earlier research a theoretical framework was formed based on three motivational theories: “Values”, “The belief in your capacity” and “goal orientation”Through analysis three themes materialized from the interviews: The connection between theory and reality, Independence and Resistance. In the theme The connection between theory and reality the teachers claimed that its good for the motivation of the students to connect their reality with theory. It helped students to believe in their capacity to achieve in other tasks as well. But it also raised the value of chemistry since it was more connected to their reality. In the theme Independence it showed that teachers placed a great importance to that students showed initiative in their education. The teachers said that open laboratory lessons where a good tool to make students more independent and motivated. In the theme Resistance it was shown what teachers thought about to make the laboratory lessons easier for the students. The teachers where critical to perform open laboratory lessons since students thought it was hard when there were no clear instructions.
