Abstract [en]

This thesis project explores how housing architecture can benefit the health and well-being of residents. Titled Healthy Living, the project proposes a new residential building in Hagsätra, a district within the municipality of Stockholm currently targeted for urban development and housing construction according to The Stockholm City Plan. The project responds not only to the ongoing housing shortage in Stockholm, but also to the growing demand for healthier and more sustainable living environments.

The thesis question guiding this project is: How can we design housing that benefits the health and well-being of residents? To address three core aspects of health – physical, mental and social – the project incorporates greenery, proximity to sports facilities, and co-living as key design strategies. These elements aim to support active lifestyles, reduce stress and foster meaningful social interactions.

The proposal reimagines a currently underutilized site by replacing a parking lot and a single-story sports facility, with a new mixed-use development that includes co-living apartments, shared spaces for health-related activities for the residents, and upgraded facilities for the local sports club. The building complex consists of three interconnected volumes, surrounded by green outdoor spaces, rooftop terraces, and open views towards the adjacent sports field. A modular structural system based on cross-laminated timber (CLT), are used to reduce environmental impact, and enhance construction efficiency. Natural materials such as wood are used throughout, contributing to a calming atmosphere, and a strong connection to nature.

The result is a residential concept that combines social sustainability with environmental responsibility. It offers a replicable model for urban housing that contributes to the health and well-being of its residents.
