Abstract [en]

In today’s world we face a major challenge, climate change. For a long time, demolishing the old and building new has been the obvious choice. In a society of production and waste, we are beginning to realize our responsibility to move towards circular thinking, defending nature and the intangible values that haven’t been prioritized. The demolition of buildings involves many losses, both in terms of the materiality of the building, the carbon dioxide it emits and the intangible values that get lost.

My thesis project is an attempt to explore how we can work with the existing, taking care of what is already there. Working with two sports facility buildings in Uppsala city with high historical- cultural values; Gymnastikhuset and Bollhuset, one of them (Bollhuset) threatened to be demolished, I seek to find a fair answer to how a new proposed sport facility could relate to these two buildings.

Furthermore the project doesn’t end with the limit of the façade. An important intention throughout the project has been to work with the surrounding park in which the project is seated and the life that surrounds it, creating and giving back new public rooms integrated with the building. Landscape, architecture and life can therefore work as a whole.
