Metadata-Driven Summarization of Streaming Sports Content: A Case Study on Football Highlight Generation

Abstract [en]

This thesis explores a method for generating football recaps in real-time using metadata annotations to tag specific video clips in real-time. By using the inherent functionalities in Adaptive Bitrate Streaming, it is possible to tag clips within the manifest to create lightweight and dynamically scale length of recap videos. A prototype was developed and then evaluated through qualitative and quantitative interviews with 15 participants. The results indicate a generally positive reception of both the feature and the method used for the clips generated. The method shows potential to be a low-cost implementation for lower leagues and shows promise to be a method for future broadcasts with further development.

Detta examensarbete utforskar en metod för att generera fotbollssammanfattningar i realtid genom att använda metadata-annoteringar för att tagga specifika videoklipp. Genom att utnyttja de inneboende funktionerna i Adaptive Bitrate Streaming är det möjligt att tagga klipp direkt i manifestet för att skapa lättviktiga och dynamiskt skalbara sammanfattningsvideor. En prototyp utvecklades och utvärderades därefter genom kvalitativa och kvantitativa intervjuer med 15 deltagare. Resultaten visar på en generellt positiv uppfattning om både funktionen och metoden som användes för de genererade klippen. Metoden visar potential som en lågkostnadslösning för lägre ligor och har potential att användas i framtida sändningar med vidare utveckling.
