This chapter explores transit safety through the analysis of crime victimization and the perceptions of safety among travelers, with a particular focus on transit nodes in cities. This chapter begins by discussing the causes and consequences of transit crime, along with the fear it generates and the varied safety needs of travelers. A case study from Sweden has focused on stations and illustrates how crime counts and rates vary, the temporal variation of crimes in the station, how travelers are exposed to crime victimization, and where they feel most unsafe. The study indicates the need to move beyond conventional planning practices to address travelers’ diverse and intersectional safety needs that vary over time and space. This chapter concludes by proposing a set of scenarios where the safety of travelers is integrated into the planning of railway stations.
