Abstract [en]

Culture significantly influences individuals' thoughts, emotions, and interpersonal interactions. This current study examines the impact of culture on facial expressions and perceptions, as well as the development of empathy. Although some emotional expressions are considered universal, cultural context deeply shapes how these expressions are displayed, interpreted, and responded to. We present a framework that captures the dynamic interaction between collective and individual cultural influences, facial expression, and empathy. By addressing both levels of culture, the framework offers a more nuanced understanding of emotional communication across cultural boundaries. We also outline promising directions for future research, including a stronger focus on individual cultural influences and the use of longitudinal studies to track cultural change over time.
