Violence is often caused by a combination of determinants or “triggers.” Poverty—one of several “triggers” of violence—is discussed in detail in this chapter. The objective of the chapter is to summarize evidence on whether the poverty-violence link exists, what might be the theoretical mechanisms linking poverty to violence, and associated factors within and across populations. The chapter ends with reflections based on the discussed body of literature and highlights some of the most urgent research challenges.
